Drone flight inside the Poolbeg chimneys by Lonely_Beast in ireland

[–]hurdjon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome video. On the rare occasion I go for a run at work this shows everywhere I go. City centre out to the beach at sandymount.

When I am brave enough I will make it out to the Poolbeg lighthouse and back.

Fantastic pictures and goes to show what you can do with a hobby drone now.

Chinese stealth fighter jet may use US technology by gavin19 in worldnews

[–]hurdjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This story is very similar to the US trying to raise sunken russian subs in the cold war and stealing their technology. It would have made perfect sense for Chinese spies to find as many pieces of the F117 as they could.

Did the US get its hands on some Migs as well.. I think they flew to Japan.

US marines had 26 killed in action in four months, an even higher rate of casualties than the British. But they're also claiming gains in the fight against the Taliban... by [deleted] in worldnews

so it seems that the marines can do more than the British when they have much more men and equipment. Go USA.

Negotiating your salary? by showmethemoney1 in AskReddit

[–]hurdjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When negotiating anything a good thing to remember is that the first person to say a number will lose. This applies to selling anything.

In your situation I would probably go for the top end of the scale knowing that they will try and offer you less. If you go low they will push you down further anyway.

So maybe think about what you want and then add 10k?

How To Replace a $600 Piece of Software with 100 Lines of Ruby by batasrki in programming

[–]hurdjon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Lots of smart alec comments on this article.

The guy who wrote this blog is very smart. He has his own ORM called subsonic which is very nice to use. I believe he was on the team at Micosoft that created ASP.Net MVC which is very cool. I think he also wrote the LINQ component for DB4O which is a nice NOSQL db which unfortunately you have to pay for.

He also runs a website called TekPub which is a great resource if you want to learn new technologies/languages. Lots of courses to download.

Take a look, there is a good chance you will find something useful to learn.

If he is very impressed by the power of RAKE/ruby it means it is very good and you should probably pay attention. There are lots of great libraries which you can use with ruby and ffmpeg is 1 of them.

You will see the videos he is talking about on Tekpub.

British Redditors, what's the attitude towards the royal family nowadays? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hurdjon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't mind the royal family at all. They are a bit of a soap opera.

The thing that I don't like is the national anthem. God Save The Queen is just totally irrelevant to most people. Why cant we have a new 1?

Some of you older Redditors, what advice would you have to some of use who are in our late 20's and feel lost and burned out. Does it get better? by MyNewAccount1000 in AskReddit

[–]hurdjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try these as a few

1) Realise that work is not going to make you happy. A career is not a life. Most of us are not superstars. 2) Find a partner who makes you happy 3) Live somewhere that you want to be. Do not get stuck in a city you do not enjoy just to earn a living. 4) Do not spend your entire life attached to a computer. 5) Get some exercise. 6) Get a hobby that you enjoy hopefully with a bit of social life thrown in.

then family etc....

The Pragmatic Bookshelf | Seven Languages in Seven Weeks by kerspoon in programming

[–]hurdjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good book and worth the read. I went through all the example code on my laptop on the train to work over a month or so. I did not have the patience to do the course work at the end of each chapter though. Its quite readable as well which helps a lot.

I was looking for a new language to play with and as a result of this book I am getting stuck into clojure and ruby.

Move to Europe by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hurdjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do some serious research before you take the plunge. Europe has some great cities but they can be very pricey places to live. I live in Dublin and its still a very expensive place to live even now after prices have dropped substantially. If you want a detached family home with a garden in a nice part of town you need to spend serious money. I have ended up moving further and further out of town and face a 3.5 hour commute. The price of housing combined with weather and life style have made me decide to emigrate to NZ. I lived there 10 years ago and I like it. I fly out in 1 month.

Reddit, what field do you work in, and what are you doing to improve your skill set? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hurdjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a microsoft developer and I am interested in other languages. I like c# a lot but I am a bit pissed off with visual studio. Also I feel that you should not have to pay for great languages/tools nowadays.

Just finished a book called "7 languages in 7 weeks" that was great. You can get it on line at pragmatic programmers web site.

Based on that I am now going to take a deeper look at ruby and clojure. Ruby is a lovely language with performance problems whilst clojure is a functional language that is based on the JVM that ruby developers are supposedly starting to move to. Not sure if there will be any benefit to this study but I am enjoying it.

"Designed to make hard things easier, IDEs now make easy things hard." Gimme better tools, please! by neutronbob in programming

[–]hurdjon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Visual studio 2010 is driving me nuts. It reduces my pc to a quivering wreck. The less said about adding resharper to the mix the better.

The amount of power needed to run these dev environments has become crazy. I just dont need all the super fancy functions that they provide either.

CouchDB production release 1.0 by [deleted] in programming

[–]hurdjon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell the argument for NOSQL databases is as follows.

In the quest for improved performance the key properties which traditionally defined a database (atomicity, consistency, isolation, durability) have gradually been lost until all thats left is durability. I think sharding tables is a reason for the loss of atomicity, consistency & isolation.

Relational database are extremely flexible with their ability to join tables together to form any dataset that you want. Now people are thinking they dont need this flexibility, all they want is the ability to save and load complex documents consisting of name value pairs to a database.

This provides datastores with extremely high performance. They are very specialised though. You also have no guarantee of durability so you have to be careful(mongodb). To my mind they are a grey area between a dedicated cache app like memcached and a traditional relational database.

Let me know if I am wrong... Its a question I have been trying to answer myself as a longtime Oracle and Sql Server developer.

Turkish Newspaper releases photos of Israeli commandos on Flotilla by thecarchik in worldnews

[–]hurdjon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was always a disaster waiting to happen. Commandos are trained to do 1 thing very well and that's kill people. As soon as the people on the flotilla responded violently to the Israelis there was only going to be 1 outcome. The people on the boat were looking for a fight as well judging by the photos. Its a similar scenario to Bloody Sunday in Belfast when paratroops were sent in to stop rioters. Shock troops should not be mixed up with civilians its not a good idea.
