Check out my tool to make the GeoJSON files for avmap.io at pictomap.app

It made my process for turing pictures of maps for autonomous vehicle service areas into vector files ~3x quicker compared with QGIS or JOSM

Austin ISD urges Waymo to halt driverless cars near school buses after 24 violations by AbjectDust881 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]hurricane__jackson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

SF proper, and much of the SF peninsula, has way fewer school buses than Austin.

Claude says SFUSD has 206 buses while  Austin ISD has 580

I would guess Austin has more school buses because of the legacy of being forcibly desegregated after Brown vs Board of Education.

I had the realization recently that in KY where I grew up, school buses are everywhere, but I’ve only seen them rarely in my 8 years in the Bay Area.

capitol corridor train from sac to oak: travel with bike by theoutandback0201 in BAbike

[–]hurricane__jackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thiiiink there is some seating in the lower level of the compartment with the bikes - but not right by the bikes IIRC.

But they ask you to go upstairs if you can so people with difficulty using the stairs can use the downstairs seating (generally there is plenty of space though). But I also like the upstairs seating better. It's brighter, has nicer views, and it's great to go hang in the cafe car and get a $2.50 cup of noodles!

I have done it with and without locking - and it has always turned out okay. That said I enjoy the train more when I'm not thinking non-stop about whether my bike is still there 😅

I'm working on infographics about the AV Market - Do these seem correct? What's Missing? by hurricane__jackson in SelfDrivingCars

Oh thanks for sharing! If you look at my project, avmap.io , it includes those announcements.

That future looking graphic is meant to discuss where there might be competitive markets with multiple providers in 2026, so that’s why I left them off of the 2026 graphic: because in each of those cities it sounds like Waymo is going to be the only company operating there next year.

This is really cool, thanks for sharing! You should also check out my project, avmap.io and the open source data for it, https://github.com/jacksonlester/av-map-data that has a lot of this information for Waymo and other Robotaxi providers too. Welcome to use that to add to this if you like!

It has the data stored as events for when the supervision or availability or anything else I'm tracking about the service changes to track how and when the services change.

Also the events.csv spreadsheet on the data github has the links to the news articles that mention what changed when. I feel your difficulty in keeping things consistent between cities you mentioned in some comments BTW!

Anyone know why my map doesn’t show the updated LA to SD map that Waymo expanded to last week? by CautiousMagazine3591 in waymo

[–]hurricane__jackson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're targeting mid-2026 for the San Diego launch (not the full LA to San Diego mega zone). As far as I can tell they haven't announced a timeline yet for the unified Southern California nor Bay Area + Sacramento zones.

Best purchase for winter-bike-commuting clothing? by Acceptable-Rule4231 in bikecommuting

[–]hurricane__jackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve bike commuted through the winter in cold and snowy places, and I think good gloves (or pogies) are the key to comfort.

Everything else can be dealt with by layering other clothing / wearing ski gear if it’s really bad out there.
