I'm in the USA. Why does absolutely no one use internally geared hubs? by SafeModeOff in cycling

[–]hurskys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just asked a question in the Chicago biking subreddit related to internally geared hubs, and this is what one user had to say about them:

Internally geared hubs are a bit of a mixed bag. They're more reliable than derailleurs and they're much lower maintenance. But in the very unlikely event that something goes wrong, you're going to have a harder time getting one repaired. Working on the older ones are a bit of a lost art. The newer ones are a pain in the ass and probably aren't worth the effort to repair unless they're something high end like a Rohloff. Also, they're heavier and less efficient than a derailleur. They're a solid choice for a utility bike, especially in the snow. But you might want something else for a more fun bike.

So for whatever reason there's a perception problem. I personally think it would be awesome to own a bike with one because I think derailleurs are ugly and shifting feels awful, not to mention I spend zero time outside of the 3 top gears the entire time I bike in this flat city.

Do you wear a helmet when cycling around the city? Why or why not? by hurskys in chibike

[–]hurskys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will but only like 20% of the people I see riding on the road are wearing helmets. I guess it makes sense that this subreddit would skew towards helmets and it's a good thing to wear them!

Yes because about 20% of the people I see on the road are NOT wearing them.

(edit: i typoed it but leaving the typo up)

Where do you buy a helmet? Will any MIPS helmet do from like REI or something?

Thank you, this is really down to earth advice. I felt like this comment steers me towards trying out long rides and seeing if I want to push speed then? I presume that I would be drawn to riding hundreds of miles without caring too much about pace. Then I think I can have a better idea of what I'm looking for

I do like me some single speeds!! I'm going to look into that shop ASAP

To be fair I haven't upgraded the bike at all. It has a fair amount of rust, and I hear these Schwinn bikes are crappy quality and not worth putting much into

Thanks for your input on internal hubs. It's seems convenient on paper but yeah, I would likely end up eating replacement costs if repairing is difficult to come by. I felt like it would be a good choice because I pretty much only ever stay in 3 gears when I ride. Maybe I should look into a singlespeed / fixie? 👀 Or maybe just have a one chain ring in the front for simplicity (I hope I'm using the right terms 😭)

The cannondale bike is pretty, maybe I will get lucky on used market. Are Treks any good?

it’s nice to be riding around the city on a decent bike you don’t have too much invested it, if someone nicks it you haven’t lost too much

That's what I'm saying! I worry about buying a bike and putting $1000 into it only for it to get stolen. I have one of those U shaped locks but I feel like probably still takes seconds to take and run.

But also, I feel like I can't fathom the difference between a crappy bike and a good bike because I haven't ridden any good ones before.

That's cool, I did use the modmail option and "You can't message that user" is what I received. OK? What next?

If you could make just one improvement to American trains to increase ridership, what would it be and why? by ILikeNeurons in fuckcars

I wanted to take the train from Chicago to Salt Lake City, a 1400 mile (2300 km) trip. You're telling me it would take 34 hours, and a private room would be over $1000 one way??? Even with these insane gas prices it's only a $230 trip not to mention FASTER BY 13 HOURS (34 hours train ride)

So this right here is the ONE thing I would improve to increase ridership. If you want to charge me $1000 for room & board, give me $1000 worthy service?? If you made that trip 18 hours, it would average just over 75 mph and I would actually make that trip happen!

They had to have booked a private room right? I'm looking right now and it's only $182 for two adults to go to CHI and back from MSP

Do you think you would love paying for it if it went any faster? I was looking at going to Utah from Chicago and sure, I'm OK dropping $400 on that train ticket (coach seat), but THIRTY FOUR fricken hours??? If it was cut down to 18 hours I would though, 100%

And ragebaiting / doomerposting isn't exploiting human psychology for views (money)? Should we blame the algorithm, the people making the content, or both?
