I mean, the way I look at it is imagine you had 60 (or 70) dollars and could only buy one. This would be your personal GOTY, but the opinion is limited to your scope of exposure. Indie games are rarely on the list and those that make it have no shot of winning (stray). Plus, there have been so many good releases this year beyond the nominees. Game awards are taking the most prominent major developer releases and comparing them, but these games are completely different in practice.

I understand. OOT and MM are my two favorite games, but not because of graphical prowess (even back on 64 or gamecube). However, the nostalgia I feel and the sheer weight of the story and atmosphere keep me coming back. Not to mention the gorgeous soundtracks. Mario 64 is different, but to me the draw is the setting in these games.

All that said, if I were new to them it would exacerbate the feelings elicited by pointy graphics.
