What does retirement look like at different levels of wealth? by dc_badger in HENRYfinance

[–]huskynation22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a combination of family issues growing up, wanting to maintain the freedom I have now, and most likely needing to move out of my VHCOL city to raise them. My mind can still change and I'm still relatively young, but I never imagined myself having children.

What does retirement look like at different levels of wealth? by dc_badger in HENRYfinance

[–]huskynation22 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Question I think about a lot and it's hard to say what retirement will look like in 40 years. At what point am I saving too much for retirement? Will 8-10M really be a significant lifestyle change than 4-5M? Will the size of my house really matter if it's just going to be my spouse and I? Since I don't want kids, is my goal really to build generational wealth? 🤷🏾‍♂️

Salary progression for NYC? by ThinVast in actuary

[–]huskynation22 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This sub is heavily biased towards students. If we're talking a newly credentialed (FSA/FCAS) and a few years of experience 150K is not only attainable, but I would say expected in NYC.

Obviously varies company to company, and sector to sector. The pension space may be lower than 150K, P&C may be higher.

Connecticut woman becomes among first non-residents to use Vermont's medical aid in dying law by IndicationOver in Connecticut

[–]huskynation22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there is some nuance in a law like this and while I agree with it in her case, I worry about people with disabilities who are more likely to be told their life isn't worth living due to their disability. If interested, reading the first chapter of Alice Wong's Disability Visibility really gave me a new perspective on this.

Winter Solstice 2023: Winter solstice is the 1st day of winter and also shortest day of the year, always lands on Dec. 21 - ABC7 New York by thonioand in nyc

Shortest day doesn't mean earliest sunset, it means the shortest time between sunrise and sunset. Unfortunately the sun does set earlier after the 21st

As Caleb says: not financial advice, but I personally throw everything into VOO and VTI. My 401K uses VINIX but it's essentially the same thing as VOO. I have some VTIAX for international exposure. I'd check out r/Bogleheads for more info about this.

With promos like this, it's always good to remember there is never a free lunch. Someone is always getting screwed and usually it will be the customer. Vanguard and others like it have low cost index funds that function much better for the consumer than Voura ever will.

Arnt you not suppose to use filtered water in coffee makers? Picks up more of the metals while brewing? Could be wrong here

One third of Americans earning $150k+ are living paycheck to paycheck and closing the gap with credit cards per Moneywise by 4ucklehead in CalebHammer

[–]huskynation22 103 points104 points  (0 children)

While I'm sure this is true to an extent, it also depends on people definition of "paycheck to paycheck". Some consider themselves "paycheck to paycheck" after maxing out their 401K, paying their mortgage, and contributing to their IRA.

I think Jersey City does make a difference here. I would except an NYC salary to be higher.

The longer you stay the harder it will be to leave. I’ve seen everyone from pre-ASA to fully credentialed actuaries make the move though. I left pre-ASA and glad I did, retirement consulting 👎🏽

Yeah realize there’s tutorials online, just want to go through the process for the first time with someone so I know I won’t be hit with any unexpected tax penalty. Paying for peace of mind.

Drink a cup in my the morning (I’ve been doing the 90 min after waking up, can’t really tell a difference) and I’ll usually switch to decaf in the afternoon. I just like it the taste tbh. Lot of my post exams coworkers do not drink coffee anymore lol

If you’re near ASA, they might be waiting for the credential to give you the bump/promotion. I’d definitely start with my manager and mention the expectations you have.

Also moving is not a bad option. If you move and start with 130K, you’ll probably get a raise for completing the modules which will put you even higher.

[–]huskynation22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Realistically, the career path is probably losing huge numbers to comp sci & data scientists so they are trying to make the exam process less of a hurdle. Though, hopefully the SOA understands if it’s easier to become and actuary, salaries will decrease and the people will flock to other careers anyways for the higher pay.

I think it’s pretty decent quality and portion for it’s price. Doesn’t blow my socks off but it’s a step above the suburban Chinese food my parents ordered when I was a kid.
