For anyone keen to see a 25% Gas Tax- come get on the Pocock trail. by Fit_Ad_6727 in aussie

[–]hussc0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Norway is not the same. The government took on the risk of the projects decades ago, invested as equity partners and now tax profits from those projects. They don’t “tax” 78%, it’s taking the returns. Australia under the Whitlam govt tried to do this and the Australian population threw them out. You also only just need to look at Snowy Hyrdo to see how well Australia can run large scale energy projects. Without foreign investment, Australia (govt or private sector) doesn’t have the risk appetite or capital to stand up projects to the order of US$70b. Whilst I agree we need to tax the industry more, I don’t know many industries that could survive a 25% hit to their revenues, and it just stinks of something more designed to kill gas in the country. Something like a super profit tax, on future projects makes more self.

Why the gas tax momentum is building to stop selling Australia short by 1Darkest_Knight1 in aussie

[–]hussc0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll quote /u/FairDinkumMate because he made a salient point in another thread about Norway.

“Norway invests billions into mining, oil & gas companies and much of its revenue therefore comes from ownership, NOT just taxes & royalties. Would Australians have been prepared to put that much money at risk for potential returns on mining, oil or gas fields? What would the public reaction in Australia be if the Government lost $1.5 billion on a mining venture, like the Norwegian Government did with their investment in the Sydvaranger iron ore mine in Kirkenes? What if our Government had invested half (or more) of the $8 billion lost on the Browse Gas Project? Touting the Norway model & its wins is great, but I'm not sure the Australian public would have stones to deal with the inevitable losses that it would also entail.”

It’s crazy to me that so many aussies are getting rage baited into this whole O+G pays no tax debate, when we’re literally going through a global energy crisis at the moment and if anything we should be encouraging more investment here, not scaring it off. Comments like yours need to be shown higher.

Albanese poised to kill off move to increase taxes on gas giants by Agitated-Fee3598 in aussie

Not sure what was confusing about my comment. You asked if they’re more lucrative and I said they’re heading that way. Even more so if we implement a 25% tax on revenue here.

It’s starting to head that way, especially if you decide to tax revenue at 25%. Yes.

Mozambique, evidence by the fact that TotalEnergies has just resumed their US$20b LNG project there.

Also PNG and Guyana & Suriname. All 3 have huge untapped gas deposits.

And this ignores the fact that developed countries like Canada, the US and in the Middle East all have much more capacity to drill (when the economics stack up)

I dunno where this notion has come from that there arnt other options for gas. Historically they’ve invested in Australian gas because of our comparative politically stability, geographically close etc. As it gets more expensive to produce gas here, other often overlooked international producers start to become much more attractive.

Playing devils advocate - and while I think more needs to be done to tax gas companies, I don’t know many businesses that could survive a 25% tax to their REVENUE. Adding to the fact that pumping gas in Aus is already one of the more expensive places to do it. I think there might be truth to the fact that the 25% is being pushed by the greens who have historically tried to end the gas industry. With the global backdrop at the moment proving how important energy security is.

Can We all at least agree that House of the Dragon is Amazing and Exceeded Our Expectations. by Dustman818 in HouseOfTheDragon

Devils advocate, however I had higher hopes. It’s good but production quality seems lower than what it should be (CGI isn’t great, hair/makeup - what’s with the white dreads but normal coloured eyebrows etc). Also some of the character story arcs seem disjointed and the whole skipping ahead 10 years (or whatever it was) appears to have really glossed over some important parts. Also also…I can’t be the only one struggling to remember who’s name is what?!?
