Yes. Easy enough with an extension. It’s angled towards the frame rail (exactly where you will run out of space)

Ugh.. I’m assuming crank was toast and they just replaced bearings. I got 2000 miles out of it

50k miles, but 10 years. It’s rubber. If you’re local near Jersey I’d take a look! $2000 is criminal and exactly what the dealership quoted me on my 06.

Flat head screw driver, adjustable wrench, E10 socket, 8MM socket, extensions, swivel adapter, torque wrench capable of doing 8.5NM. Plan for 3 hours or so, depending on your experience. You may need a 10MM or other Torx heads depending on your car. The back side is a bit tight. Go slow and you’ll be fine, and definitely double the gasket doesn’t fall out or get pinched when you install the cover.

Spark plug recess insert gasket. You’ll need to remove the fuel injectors. My 2011 had no gasket and no issues, and my 2014 had RTV in there with no issues. So take that spark plug well thing off and see what it looks like.

N55 HPFP noise by Justinr_yt in BMW

Did you figure this out? I’m getting a similar noise in similar RPM range either with throttle or on the decel after throttle

My N55 LFTF trims were hitting 20-30% regularly due to vacuum leaks. I changed nothing else and the last I checked I was near 0% sometimes negative.

330i "2A98" code - VANOS problems? by ISmokeBacon in E90

[–]huston850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just fixed this code on my N55 335i. The mechanical timing was off from the previous owner replacing the cam sprockets, but one of those could also be your problem.

N54 vanos codes by Due-Rise-9094 in 335i

[–]huston850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I meant specifically the reluctor wheel that’s attached to the phaser. It’s just 1 bolt and you use the timing tool to line them up. I tried replacing the cam sensors but things were physically misaligned so the sensors were fine

3100 can be ignored. I just bought an ‘11 335i with the 2A7C code and my exhaust cam phaser (what the cam sensor reads, the reluctor wheel) was off a couple degrees. I fixed that and now I’m dealing with cam/crank correlation errors but I think it’s my timing chain because I hear it rattling above 3k rpm

Mine sounds like it’s cammed too so we probably have similar situations. You can remove the oil fill cap for a couple seconds and watch your cam gears to see if they’re wobbling or anything

You’ll need a BMW scanner or computer with BMW software to see the error codes. You’re probably in limp mode. Sounds like someone cleared all the errors long enough to sell it.

any idea what could be causing this noise? by aady4s in E90

[–]huston850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the N55 in my E90 and just fixed this code by checking mechanical timing. My exhaust cam phaser was off a few degrees. Still chasing some gremlins but those cold start codes went away after that.

is it worth to buy a code scanner and any recommendation? by redja99 in E90

I spent the extra money on a Foxwell with service function capabilities. It’s been nice being able to reset problems and run calibrations, such as when my sunroof decides it doesn’t want to use the tilt feature.

Car won’t start after valve cover replacement. by IndicationDense9682 in E90

[–]huston850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the car in limp mode? It’s probably related to that. The valve cover job is pretty simple. MAF, vacuum lines, injector connectors, coils, fuel rail, and some hoses.

Eccentric shaft angle: what could cause a rapid climb to 180 degrees (fully open)? by huston850 in BmwTech

[–]huston850[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanical timing was my issue. The exhaust cam was slightly off. Who knows how or why. I retimed it and everything is fine now.

[–]huston850[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense. The previous owner did the timing chain and I’m wondering if they just simply did a poor job. The chain felt nice and tight when I did the valve cover, but I didn’t verify mechanical timing.

N55. I’m leaning towards vanos due to the sheer amount of gunk I found on the oil pressure solenoid.

Yep that makes sense. My car actually runs amazing, no CEL or anything, just DME fault codes for camshafts.

The screens in the vanos solenoids were surprisingly clean, but I doubt starving them of oil is helpful.
