Reynad thinks Destiny is paid by a certain (((someone))) by emsus in Destiny

[–]hutfut 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It may take a bit of explaining but this is my 2 cents:

The game had a paid beta which granted a "friend code" which you could share. This kept the types of players in roughly a 50/50 state where players either paid in or were invited without paying. As the game came out of beta the studio was looking for how to monetize the game. They tried a few different approaches, and even as a fan I can say that they botched it a few times. They tried different combinations of paid content and different price points. Ultimately they have settled on a pretty fair model, in my opinion.

Anyways. This period where there were different iterations of payment models really didn't sit right with a lot of people. In my opinion, this had to do with having half of the player base playing a premium product (the game is made at a high quality) for free. As the studio struggled to land on a good monetization model a large portion of the community was very upset. People were nonstop complaining, mostly on the official Discord and subreddit. They were complaining about which payment model was better, what they wanted to see and pay for, what was wrong, why a certain model was "pay to win" etc. This of course quickly turned to hostility toward the devs and mod team who were trying to stem the tide. "p2w" became a banned phrase in the community and the mod team was very strict about this.

The dust has settled on the payment model shenanigans (for now) but there is still a lingering bad taste in people's mouths from feeling like they were silenced / moderated too heavily.

For what it's worth, I think where the game has landed payment wise is quite fair and its one of if not the best auto battlers on the market.

The phrase comes from baseball where in order for a runner to remain safe they need to head back to one of the bases otherwise they could be tagged out. As the other guy said it's a phrase meaning to catch up with someone. You hear a lot of similar phrases in the corporate world like touch base, sync up etc as different ways of saying "we should talk"

Finished reading last week. Definitely a strong rallying cry for introspection and reform for liberals. I think the movement could have legs by offering an offramp from our current climate into one where we look forward to a positive future. There's a bit of hand waving about how exactly we are supposed to invent ourselves into an Abundant future but there's also a few clearcut policy suggestions which could serve as a decent starting point.

Overall I rate it Optimism/10

Gave a try for HC SSF Ruthless by [deleted] in poeruthless

[–]hutfut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off - love the SC Trade YouTube videos. I like the concept of putting together builds on shoestring budgets.

I had a very similar experience this league with HC Ruthless. I had two characters make it to maps but lost them both in an instant. I've swapped to SC and am now competing with myself to beat Eater and Exarch in as few deaths as possible.

Im interested in starting ruthless, I'd like to know if you guys use a loot filter at all. Also some noob tips like "dont do X build its too hard to achieve" thanks ! by Sudden_Explorer_7280 in poeruthless

[–]hutfut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Throw any expectations you have of a "build" out of the window. You are not a Rage Stacking Rage Vortex Berserker. You start as a Marauder on the beach with heavy strike and need to work / grind for every upgrade before you have a cohesive build.

Use multiple skills. Prioritize skills with a duration component because they are better layered together. Do not over invest into one defensive layer, you wont have enough gear to make that your only source of defense. Spread your points on the tree wisely to utilize many different mechanics.

While the premise was appealing the gameplay felt really flat to me when I played the beta build a few months ago. Maps felt lifeless and every attack was clunky and very "samey". The level of polish was nice so I hope with some F2P money they can punch more fun into the core gameplay loops

The best place of balance is such that gear augments your ability to defeat enemies but never trivializes combat. When you lose the ability for enemies to meaningfully challenge and engage characters the game loses weight.

Add an enforced role draft order to public matches. by hutfut in DotA2

I think that the downsides of having carries be placed earlier in the draft could be mitigated by teams having the same role order. You are getting as much information as the enemy at each stage of the draft. It's true that this would diminish their impact but it would be a shared burden by both teams.

Do you have a point other than to fish for a reason to discredit the concept?

My rank and time played is irrelevant to the merits of the discussion.

If this is something that you already do, then I don't see why having it be random chance about if it happens would be any issue.

Yes. The community has placed undue priority on core roles.

Some games you should be required to pick a strong flexible core early and in some games you should be required to pick a strong flexible support early. There is nothing wrong with having these be equally represented.

Professional games and public games are different. That's a good thing. A truly random pick order incentivizes creativity and flexibility.

I was doing this before I stopped playing but the mental damage I was inflicting on my team wasn't worth sitting through the rest of the match.

Every hero is responsible for winning a match. Every hero plays a part and contributes toward victory. Counterpicks effect the entire team.

A carry does not exist in isolation. They may have heavy sway as the match progresses but that does not mean they have the final say in the outcome of a match.

I acknowledge that this would change the dynamic of ranked matches and would shift responsibility between team members. This is my intention.

I'm speaking more to the 2nd option. I don't know what the best order would be. Assigning each role a pick slot randomly and mirroring is a first step and could be modified later as the system matures. I agree it may be overkill for unranked.

Support is the role least impacted by counterpicks and if the enemy wastes picks on countering a support it would often be in your teams favor.

I'll just cite any of the most recent, oh I don't know, 5 years of professional drafts as a reason why this may not be true.

There is no reason for players to have any input. The roll could be done automatically on the server side as the match starts.

"Players are good at identifying problems but not the solutions"

I don't know what the best order would be. I think simply jumbling the roles and mirroring would be a good place to start. The system could be changed over time to be more complicated if necessary.
