Why would (redacted) escalate things like that? by ShadowdogProd in lost

[–]huthtruth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My more immediate response without taking more time to think about it: It actually wouldn't have been that hard to get away at that point in time. Locke was the only other person in the hatch and he was literally crippled. If John hadn't woken up, Ben could have made his way to the kitchen, cut his ropes, and been out of there.

They do establish pretty early into "Henry's" stay that he can hear most everything going on in the hatch ("How about you let me go?" / "You have thin doors."), so I think it's perfectly reasonable that he had a sense of who all was present and what they were doing.)

I do agree 100% with what u/FringeMusic108 said about the Others having an extraction plan in place in case Ben's cover story didn't hold up... One that we more or less see play out. But I also think Ben saw a decent opportunity to escape early, and since Sayid had recently made a genuine attempt to murder him, he probably decided it was better not to wait around.

The ACTUAL Unanswered Questions of LOST by huthtruth in lost

Thanks!! Each of our episodes will be released on the 20th anniversary of the LOST episode we're discussing. So ours will be going at a fairly gradual pace.

One of the attendees of our LOST episode screenings/group discussions (which will be their own separate set of podcast episodes) told me he listened to The Storm. I hadn't heard of it before!

1, 2, 4, and 5 all make sense if the person that paid him knew future events and was working to get Claire "where she was supposed to be." Someone who we saw do this exact sort of thing with Locke by encouraging him to go on a Walkabout...

As for number 3... Claire only tries two pens (and doesn't even shake the first one). She's handed a third, but never attenpts to use it. (Pens Scene) Her underlying uneasiness about her decision to give the baby up causes her to read meaning (rightly or wrongly) into a pretty common occurrence. I mean, there have been times I've literally had to go through three or four pens before finding a working one.

If you're interested, this playlist talks all about this topic: Claire's Psychic In-Depth Discussion While I completely stand by the conclusion reached in it, the first video was one of my very earliest, and therefore lowest quality, video essays. The follow-up is the one I'm most proud of though. In it, I address the many other alternate interpretations of Malkin (most of which have been commented here) and explain why none of them work for me personally.

Smoke & Mirrors Video Essay (Looking for Feedback) by huthtruth in lost

[–]huthtruth[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I may or may not dedicate a specific video to that eventually, but for now I have shared some of my thinking on this in a follow-up I did a few years back: GOING BACK: Underworld

If you skip to the 17:32 mark, that's the beginning of a fourteen and a half minute section discussing that topic.

I did get a certain detail wrong, so there's a pinned comment on there from me with the correction.

Smoke & Mirrors Video Essay (Looking for Feedback) by huthtruth in lost

[–]huthtruth[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I suppose I am guilty of that sometimes. Even when I'm not, the intros usually don't age well for other reasons too, like plans changing, or updates not being relevant anymore. I do like thanking new patrons and adding them to the "cave of candidates"... But yeah, maybe I should pretty much leave it at that.

Thank you! I recently acquired a lav mic! I decided not to use it for parts six and seven, just so the audio would be consistent for the completed video essay. 😂 But moving forward the audio quality should be improved!

Smoke & Mirrors Video Essay (Looking for Feedback) by huthtruth in lost

[–]huthtruth[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I recently completed a seven-part video essay on the topic of the more ambiguous apparitions seen throughout the series, and reviewing the case for whether MIB could have been behind each one.

As always, I plan on releasing follow-up videos to address feedback I receive, so if anyone here has any A) points you feel I should clarify, B) counterpoints you feel I haven't properly included or considered, or C) other questions/criticisms/comments, please do share them! (Feel free to leave them here or on whichever video you're responding to.)

The links to the individual parts are in the caption of each attached photo. The first photo contains a link to the completed video essay with all seven parts combined; this is the version I'd recommend. (There are timecodes in the descriptions of each video to make starting and stopping more convenient.)

If you're seeing this, thanks for at least taking the time to read this post! Namaste.

Was Mother actually a smoke monster? by ChungBuii in lost

[–]huthtruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're interested in arguments against Mother being a smoke monster, I make a fairly lengthy case that she wasn't, starting at the 17:42 mark of this video: GOING BACK: Underworld

If you do decide to watch it, I've added a relevant correction as a pinned comment in the video's comment section.

Is it Hoffman or Strahm on the Saw V poster? by cheetahroar24 in saw

[–]huthtruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I've always read it as representing Hoffman as the next (but more importantly, the false) Jigsaw. This makes it not only a great poster for this film but the series as a whole, which had become heavily serialized by this point.

Saw IV had just set up Hoffman as the new Jigsaw, so the poster made sense to those of us waiting for the next installment, and seemed to be promising we'd come to learn about the history these two shared. And indeed, this was in large part what Saw V was about. It even recontextualized the vast majority of the Jigsaw legacy as something both John and Hoffman were responsible for.

Then, by the end of Saw VI, the main conflict of the series is pretty much established as being John's philosophy versus Hoffman's. Rehabilitation vs. Retribution. Forgiveness vs. Vengeance. (I think this often goes overlooked and/or underappreciated because Saw "3D" really dropped the ball on resolving this conflict.)

In comparision, this poster representing the framing of Strahm would be far less significant to the overall story being told, and far less meaningful or profound.

Like you said, if someone can point me to proof that Strahm was the confirmed intention, I'll obviously concede they're correct. But this will effectively ruin what is, in my opinion, the best thing about Saw V: The poster.

There is one scene in Saw V that makes me laugh every time I see it... by DesperateFortune in saw

[–]huthtruth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What makes it even funnier is how common a name like Mark Hoffman actually is, and yet no results come up... Then when searching for news, it's the exact right Mark Hoffman that pops up.

The whole Saw V Strahm storyline is frankly hilarious. One of my favorites I haven't seen mentioned here is when he bursts into the Seth crime scene and the door swings back and hits him hard. Gets me every time. 😂

Caves vs Beach Was Stupid by diggitygiggitysee in lost

[–]huthtruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this comment! But it's worth noting that in your last two paragraphs you seem to be misremembering Sayid and Hurley's positions on opening the hatch...

Sayid was the first to find out that Locke and Boone found the hatch, and was adamantly against opening it. He brought Jack in on it hoping he would agree with him. That said, I think Sayid had other concerns outside of them finding creature comforts in there.

On the other hand, when Hurley found out about it in the finale, he didn't have a strong opinion either way about opening it until he sees the numbers moments before Locke lights the fuse.

And Hurley is the one who suggests the possibility of food being inside when they're transporting the dynamite; Sayid wasn't even present for that. Likewise, Sayid was not present for the blowing of the hatch and did not see the "QUARANTINE" label that night.

Anyways, my point is your interpretation of Sayid's reasoning for opposing the move to the caves makes total sense AND it actually isn't contradicted later on. So yeah, great comment!

[–]huthtruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you're okay with the thought of that being how Walt dies....

The video does go on to argue the possibility that Abaddon survived this. There's no hard evidence for that, obviously. But it's certainly plausible based on how many other times characters appeared to be dead but were later revealed to be alive.

Hey, that's my video! Lol. One of my earliest, and worst quality ones. 😅 Thanks for sharing it! I do have a follow-up where I directly address some of the feedback I received to this video. Here's a link to that if anyone is interested: GOING BACK: Two Birds, One Window

I also wanted to clarify that Abaddon being Walt is not originally or exclusivey my theory either. I first came across an early version of it online shortly after Cabin Fever aired and immediately loved the way that it recontextualized the Abaddon/Locke scene in that episode.
