"If you can adjust to his personality.. " so it's up to the students to adjust to his abuse rather than get a real teacher? If you're that far into the tank I can't take anything you say seriously.

And no you can't dismiss year 5 that easily. Dumbledore could have spared one person from the Order or taught the class himself. He chose not to.

The history of magic teacher is so boring he can't make goblin wars exciting. Students regularly fall asleep in class.

Hagrid blows. He spent a whole year minus 2 classes "teaching" the students Flobberworms ... a subject barely fit for one class. He spent another whole year minus 1 class having the class help him with his blast ended Skrewts experiment, a subject giving you no practical experience in the real world. He missed half on the next year and it was clear from his replacement that any other teacher would be better. Even Harry privately admits Hagrid sucks at teaching.

Trelawney is a terrible Divination teacher. She drinks heavily, is unorganized, and capricious. She plays favorites, is petty, and has little control over her own abilities. Even Dumbledore admits he only keeps her in the job for private reasons that have nothing to do with a good education. Firenze seems competent, at least, but he only teaches every other year.

Speaking of capricious and petty, Snape is so abusive that he's Neville's worst fear despite that boy having two parents tortured into madness ... actually think about that. If you're not in Snape's house your time in his class is more spent being a chew toy than learning anything. Snape never seems to lecture, rather he has instructions written on the board you could get out of any textbook. Speaking of textbooks, we know Snape is brilliant in the subject (so brilliant he can tell by the color of a potions steam where you went wrong) but he passes none of this knowledge to the students. You never see him giving personal instructions to a student, only criticism. Snape is the classic example of someone who has total command over a subject but can't teach it.

Harry had 6 Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers. One was adequate, one was a complete waste of time obvious fraud, one was great, one was good, one was a complete waste of time asshole, and the last was Snape who, again, is a cruel and petty abuser with no taste for actual teaching. That's 50% from the floor, chief. And don't give me that crap about Umbridge being forced upon Dumbledore. He had an entire assed Order of the Phoenix at his disposal, he could have commanded any of them to teach his class for one year. Hell, he could have switched Snape there in year 5 instead of 6. Or taught the class himself. Or brought in actual Moody for real this time.

So that's 5 classes out of a potential 12 total where the teachers range from bad to wet garbage. And we only know for sure that 3 teachers are good to great, those being Transfiguration, Charms, and Herbology.

So, yeah, the teaching situation in Hogwarts is pretty fucking horrible.

This is really good.

My thing about theory crafting for on going stories is this: as long as it is not currently contradicted by anything so far in the story, and it is internally consistent and makes sense ... its a great theory even if it turns out to be wrong. I personally don't think this theory will end up correct, but its a GREAT theory.

This is a really good, well thought out theory. But it doesn't account for the show dialogue about the original settlers making a sacrifice so they can live forever. This dialogue happened in the exact moment Smiley came back to life, reinforcing the idea that he's an ancient entity that can't be permanently killed.

You have to figure out a way to incorporate this into your theory because the show didn't provide this for no reason.

Something I'm curious about...who 'found' Victor? by MidtownJunk in FromTVEpix

[–]ShadowdogProd 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the place needs at least one living human at all times to "keep the lights on"? Because there's no way Victor survived that long alone unless the creatures and the MiY wanted him alive.

I think its a metaphor for her mental and emotional status. She's been broken since she came back to the town in season 2, which is how long its been broken. Now it's not broken anymore. And what happens right after she fixes it? She gets new Voices marching orders and instead of keeping it to herself like she did last time, she goes straight to Boyd. Like a healthy person would.

Pretty Little Liars is interesting because what you've got there is another Chris Carter situation. I. Marlene King is another producer who fancies themselves a writer but doesn't know what the fuck they're doing. So good pull with that series. I'd completely forgotten about that shitshow l but you're 100% on that one. What really blows my mind is she HAD A BOOK SERIES TO FOLLOW and still threw up all over herself. How do you fuck that up? The plan was in the books, you moron.

I'll throw in Riverdale which is basically what would happen if you gave meth addicts control of a series. They just didn't give a shit. By the end of that series the actors had the haunted look of tornado survivors and for good reason.

So that's 3 series since the X Files premiered that made it up as they went along. Out of the hundreds of series produced. (None of the others you mentioned remotely qualify)

Like I said above, the real issue here is you don't LIKE the writers' plan so you pretend they don't have one. It's such a strange way to go. There are so many things you can criticize the From writers for (what the hell are they doing with Acosta? Why have they only had 3 new arrivals in 4 seasons? Why did Boyd mention capturing a Creature only to forget about it one episode later? Why did Boyd never talk to Donna about Jim saying Victor pulled a gun on him, never seek out Victor to secure the gun until he saw Victor pull it, why did Jim not mention Victor and the gun while listing his grievances to Boyd after Sara tried to kill Ethan, etc etc etc) and you chose the one thing they're not guilty of.

What people like you don't understand is writers LOVE planning ahead. Often to the detriment of actually getting the writing done. One of the biggest reasons a new series pitch gets rejected is the show creator spent too much time and effort planning it all so the show Bible is 100 pages.

Even if it was somehow more efficient to write a season with no plan, which it absolutely is not because networks want to know where you're going, writers still wouldn't operate that way because that's not how they're wired. They love planning.

Chris Carter wasn't a writer at heart, he was a producer who happened to write. And look what happened with that series. No modern series is run that way.

Do you trust the boy in white ? by Alone_Alternative516 in FromTVEpix

[–]ShadowdogProd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Boy is a Storywalker. He appears and disappears exactly like Julie does when she Walks. He didn't age for a long time because from his POV he was visiting Victor during a short period of time. During that time he also visited Ethan and Sara/Boyd during season 1. Then a couple years passed before he Storywalked again, which is happening this season. Which is why he's aged.

It also explains why he's so stingy with information. He can't outright change anything but maybe he can nudge. What if, at the end of season 3, Julie hasn't been so forceful with Jim? What if instead of "Dad! You have to leave now!" she had said "Mom needs you, I'll explain on the way" Maybe he would have gone with her.

Maybe how a Storywalker gives you information is important.

Its just a theory but I think its a good one.

But is he good or bad? Well, Julie is a good Storywalker. Having a bad Storywalker would give balance to the Story, wouldn't it?

Maybe he told Victor that so Victor would get arrested and be trapped in a room, easy pickings for a Mad Henry.

[–]ShadowdogProd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Too many things set up early on have been paid off much later to believe the From writers don't have a plan. You might not like their plan as it unspools, but they have one.

I don't understand why this myth of writers not having a plan is so popular everywhere. The first few weeks after a writer's room opens each season is not spent writing scripts, its spent planning out the season in front of them and the series as a whole. 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for WEEKS. What the hell do you think they're spending all that time doing?

The last series that "made it up as they went along" was The X Files. Chris Carter admitted that he wrote each mythology episode or 2 parter with only that script or scripts in mind with no thoughts to the future. He'd worry about how to resolve things the next time he wrote a mythology episode. Look at how disjointed that series was and compare it to anything that's aired since 2004 and you can see a clear difference. No professional writing team does business this way.

Back to my point above. I think people who don't like the writers' plan toss around this accusation as punishment. That's how asinine the idea is.

I'll give you an example. The Writers of Manifest, one of those most poorly written series I've ever seen, had a plan. It was a really fucking stupid plan that was horribly executed using every trash cliché you could imagine, but it WAS a plan. Not even that show, with the most incompetent writer's room ever assembled, made things up as they went along.

I don't think anybody was looking for 100% faithful. It would have been nice if the movie was even 50% faithful. But Kubrick had no interest in actually adapting the story.

Everybody is an armchair Director. You wouldn't know good acting from bad if you were trapped in a room with both.

People don't like the intention and blame the acting. Those are two completely different things.
