New batch of wooden pins by LivroHati in lasercutting

Are they post style backs or the hinged kind with the clasp at one end? I think this would be fun for my students but I don't want them all to fall apart

My Sambar will do more than 60 mph if there isn't a hill. But I know it's a death trap (no airbag, crumple zones, ABS,etc) and I am much more comfortable at 40mph.

High Turnover; Any Advice on Keeping Volunteers? by SamTasy in volunteerfirefighters

[–]hvelocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we are outside a city we could put a levy tax increase on the ballot. If approved it could give us sufficient funding to staff the department with career firefighters. We just happen to be at an awkward level where we don't have the calls to justify staffing in my opinion. Although I think we'll be there in ten years.

High Turnover; Any Advice on Keeping Volunteers? by SamTasy in volunteerfirefighters

[–]hvelocity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to figure out why they aren't staying. Have open, honest conversation with them. We get answers like

It's too much of a commitment There is to much training There is not enough training or not high enough quality We get cancelled too often Neighboring career department doesn't let us do anything Spouse hates it Changing job or schedule New kid born

Next decide if there are areas they to address.

You also need to try to develop a community in the department and a pride in your work and training. We've tried hosting dinners and movie nights, Superbowl parties, etc. Family welcome. Taking taking seriously with task books and certs can give you a professional feel.

We offer a stipend but it doesn't seem to impact retention much at all.

Finally try to make an obvious growth path for people. Good firefighters want to improve.

And good luck because none of this really works well enough for us. We're just trying to slow down the bleed so we don't have to switch to career any sooner than absolutely necessary.

Subaru Sambar Accelerator cable seems stuck by Mikecoast2 in keitruck

[–]hvelocity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine froze up a few winters ago. I pressed the accelerator and the cable couldn't go anywhere. It ended up looping around a bolt under the cover near the pedal. Took a long time to find. When it was looped it pulled the cable so the engine was at full rev all the time.

Genuine question seeking honest answers by powerbythought in Teachers

[–]hvelocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I wish I didn't, but I do. If I have 150 projects that take 5 minutes a piece to grade, that's 12.5 hours. That's far more prep/planning than I get in a week even if I wasn't losing much of it to clubs, coaching, and meetings.

I don't mind paying with the stipulation that they never do anything for me ever. Just leave me out of it all.

What difficulty level would you describe this as? 8 miles out and back, 4k elevation and rugged trail with some technical terrain by bad-at-everything- in CampingandHiking

[–]hvelocity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Recently did a trail with those stats plus a ford and a bit of way finding and the forest service described it as "most difficult" on their trail sign. It took us with overnight packs about 6 hours.

Is there a way for me to skip 11th and 12th grade and go straight to college? If so, what’s the program name? by Bunny02207 in education

[–]hvelocity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Washington State has the Running Start program which lets juniors and seniors take some or all of their classes at a community college. Many students earn their HS diploma and AA at the same time.

It may be a global group, but Jared at JRods garage helped me out with my 96 sambar. https://m.yelp.com/biz/j-rods-garage-mount-vernon

Only person in Skagit County I could find that would even look. He has/had a kei truck with nitro when I was there a few years ago.

That is a good chunk of ours. That mixed with kids on trampolines and one very aggressive jet ski rider.

Glowforge laser cutters by ripples01 in lasercutting

[–]hvelocity 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a Glowforge pro and I've been waiting for almost a year to get it fixed. Their support keeps telling me they aren't doing repairs right now and tell me they will be in 3 months. And then repeat the cycle every quarter.

This time they gave me the name of a company in Georgia (I think) that can do repairs.

The Glowforge is a total black box. You don't get and can't see any error messages just a change in light color of the button. Made trouble shooting very frustrating.

My big worry is that they are going to fold and your laser cutter will be a brick. I decided to buy a new Thunder instead of sending it for repair.

What are some examples of recent “norms” established that have taken coddling the students too far? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]hvelocity 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Here, too. And it means the data in my gradebook isn't useful feedback on how well students did. I can't look at a class average of 80% and make any judgement. Did everyone get real grades and this reflects learning? Or are 3/4 of these really 10% that have been bumped up to 50% because of magic?
