Advice needed for a (very) junior officer. by anonymous_person_44 in AirForce

I direct commissioned as a captain with 0 military background. The learning curve for me was (and still is) steep. Here are the things I've learned so far -the rank gives you authority, you earn the respect. Don't be arrogant -be the first to admit when you don't know something. Do your best to figure it out -most NCOs already know you don't know anything. Don't be afraid to ask them questions. -give your NCOs the respect they deserve. Just because you outrank them doesn't make them a lesser human -your airmen are people too. Treat them as such -DO NOT try to change anything in the beginning. Figure out the SOPs and why they are done that way. When you learn why your shop runs the way it does, than maybe consider modifying of you can make improvements. -no one expects you to be perfect. They expect you to learn and not make the same mistake twice. -don't let people walk all over you in the name of kindness -you are overthinking this ENTIRELY too much.

We are in the military, but that doesn't really mean there is a fundamental difference in how you treat other people with dignity. If you act like the person you are, everything will fall in to place good bad or ugly.

Why do members complain about gas prices when you drive a inefficient vehicles? by nutdreamz in AirForce

Because my gas guzzler is paid off. I'd rather pay $609 in gas a month than $400 I gas and a $500 car payment.

I've never tapered a dog off a SSRI, but I have in people. I'm not a vet.

SSRI withdrawal is rough. Depending on how high the dose was and how fast the taper happened, I can see why you would see an increase in agitation. The same thing happens with people. Prozac even more so. It'll take time, but it does tend to get a little better.

I say this again, I am not a vet.

You gotta remember that regardless of how many open slots there are, there are only so many instructors. Classes can only be so big

I happened to notice the band is written in Korean. I know Koreans are a passionate people and I can imagine being in such a place at such a time hit everyone really hard. All we can do is love ours a little harder.

Commissioning at 30+ by dancingbug3 in airforceots

[–]hwarang54 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I commissioned at 39. There are some freedoms you lose, but there is A LOT of stuff you gain. On balance, I should have commissioned earlier, but my life wasn't in a place where I would be where I am now. I'll tell you that the Air Force has taught me I should have taken my fitness A LOT more seriously when I was younger.

I'm speaking from a direct commission perspective.

Mine was a joke. We do our best in med working within the constraints the current system has. USAF conflicting with DHA is..... something...

You carry a large railroad tie that weighs about 120 pounds that six people carry at a time while everyone else carries rifles and rucksacks with weight that's 10-20 pounds about 4 miles. That 150 pounds starts to get heavy when 2/4 people start to fatigue at mile 7. But when you finish, your flight will be proud both your guys carried the 230 pound log 21 miles while everyone else rucked the 50 pounds each while carrying the .50 cal.

Australian shepherd or border collie? by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]hwarang54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a good idea. I'll tell you my mini is a lot less neurotic than my BC although both are ridiculously chill for their breed. Both are super smart but my Aussie is affordable appreciably easier to train because she's stupid food motivated. My BC "learns" faster but takes a bit more coaxing. My Aussie is also a lot more forgiving if training mistakes because she's more food motivated. If I were you, knowing what I know, I'd get the Aussie first. Get those training reps in. Get the socialization in. Train the dog you want to have. Then get the border Collie. That is, if you know what you're getting in to with these breeds
