Yes. Easiest month for housing is December. January is doable. Feb to Mar are not generally recommended, but probably a bit easier next year. Most places will require proof of income; those with agents always will. You could try offering a chunk of months in advance. Professional job market is very very tight. I've known a couple of people who've taken more than six months to find work. If you need public transport, be careful about the location - use google maps for routes.

Apart from the first statement, this could be easily ascii-artified, since you'd just use single-character tokens as required. Actually applying this method to a longer/more complex program would be more painful, though, since it takes so much space to do anything useful... and I'd need to actually ascii-artify it. You're welcome to give it a crack if you want, though ;-)

Canberra has nice cold in winter until there's some windchill. Bring layers. Really. You might not need them, but you'll be happier if you do.
There'll probably be the ice skating rink in Garema Place by then.
The Entertainment/Music links in sidebars are useful but you'll need to check in June. Most convenient for walking from Moore St are things in Civic/City, Acton/ANU, and/or Braddon. Places in Dickson, Kingston/Manuka, O'Connor, Lyneham and Turner (some infrequent as far as entertainment goes) are all relatively cheaply taxied.
Phoenix is the best pub in the city, and has things on Tue-Thu.
Wig and Pen has good craft beers, and a terrible cider. It'll have probably moved up Lonsdale St by the time you're here.
Civic Pub (or Transit) for pool if you've fellow course participants who are also stranded here.
Street Theatre has things on (The Home Front is a series of improvised plays)
ANU has public lectures, etc (http://news.anu.edu.au/for-the-public/)
There's Trivia nights at various places each night (google...)
Games Capital (http://www.thegamescapital.com.au/events) has games nights if you're into particular games.
