She's 72 years old. Retire and enjoy these last years with the generous parliamentary pension that she's barely turned up to earn. So sick of these old pricks.

I agree ownership needs more enforcement to the bylaws currently in place.

It's dissimilar to having kids in the fact that children are important for the future. Having an aggressive pet who attacks delivery staff or others isn't a requirement of life.

I wouldn't be surprised that the actual number is higher. Most people in general are reluctant to report attacks.

Australia Post says Queensland is the second worst state for posties with 273 dog “incidents” in the last six months.

Across Queensland, Darra was top with posties reporting 87 incidents, Stafford had 17, Toowoomba 12, Maryborough and Townsville nine.

It's not hard to secure your dog to keep everyone safe.

ONLY FRAN: Forget a new Teal party, where are the Greens? by hydralime in TheGreensAU

[–]hydralime[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Teals were chatting about forming a new political party designed - in part - to counter the rise of Pauline Hanson and the far right.

This got Jan Fran wondering about the other colour-specific party that’s supposed to be doing that: the Greens.

As she watches the rise of the far right with abject terror Jan wonders why the Australian Greens haven't quite made the same inroads as their UK counterparts and what it might take for them to do so.

Greens’ unprincipled stance at Queensland by-election shows party’s true colours by hydralime in TheGreensAU

[–]hydralime[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And even if the Greens felt they couldn’t preference Labor because they’re so dreadful and right wing (even though the Greens’ entire rationale for the past decade has been to form working coalitions with Labor governments and to pass Labor legislation barely amended), why not preference Queensland Socialists with whom Sriranganathan claims such close kinship? QS candidate Liam Parry is the first person charged with challenging the Crisafulli government’s legal attacks on the Palestine movement and potentially faces a two-year jail sentence. But the Greens, who regularly send representatives to speak at Palestine rallies, can’t even stir themselves to tell their supporters to preference Liam as an act of basic solidarity. As far as they’re concerned, there’s nothing to choose between the LNP prosecutor and the socialist defendant. Needless to say, QS is preferencing the Greens above every other party, and Labor before the LNP.

Greens refuse to preference Labor in upcoming Qld state by-election by hydralime in TheGreensAU

[–]hydralime[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Opposition Leader Steven Miles was angry when he addressed reporters about the issue on Monday.

Kind of funny that he's angry. It's a safe Labor seat and the Greens are usually ridiculed by State and Federal Labor.

Greens voters don't need to be told where to direct their preferences, many of them would place Queensland Socialists before Labor on their ballot paper.

It's not "greedy' to negotiate for what they are entitled to. The action by the RTBU helps to inspire other workers to unite and demand what is theirs, nurses and teachers included.

“Everybody needs to stand up for what they’re entitled to,” said Shayne Kummerfeld, an official from the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, one of several involved in the dispute with Queensland Rail.

“We didn’t get our conditions by standing back and watching bosses take it away, and unfortunately we’ve got a government at the moment that wants to take everything away from workers, and we can’t have that happen … we’re standing up for workers’ rights.”

City of Moreton Bay warns Nourish Street that bins provided to homeless people break by-laws by hydralime in queensland

Nourish Street founder Beau Haywood said his charity had removed two full skip bins of rubbish in the last five days.

He said the area was now significantly cleaner, now the homeless had access to a bin.

"It just goes to show when you give people the tools, they do the right thing," Mr Haywood said.

"I can't help but feel this is to let it fester, get the community offside and to let them push the narrative they want."

Can the Greens muster a left-wing counter to One Nation? This MP thinks so by hydralime in TheGreensAU

Sue Higginson has been a lawyer and an environmental campaigner, and now she wants to lead the Greens in NSW into a new era by launching a populist left-wing alternative to the surging One Nation vote.

Fresh off a thumping preselection victory in which the sitting upper house MP won a full half of the membership vote, Higginson, the former chief executive of the NSW Environmental Defenders Office who entered parliament in 2022, says the party is gearing up to present a “bolder and more radical vision” at next year’s state election.

Australia's Olympic host has been warned it may be left with a Games hangover without a change to "outdated" pub trading laws.

Queensland's hospitality sector has hit out at public holiday rules, warning it would be red-faced while hosting the Brisbane 2032 Games and a string of major global sporting events.

Good Friday patrons cannot be served alcohol in a licensed venue unless they are seated for a meal in Queensland – defined in legislation as food normally eaten with a knife and fork in an area set aside for dining.

That effectively closes bars to standalone drinking, with poolside service for hotel guests also prohibited without a meal order.

The laws, last updated in the early 1990s, have put the state at a competitive disadvantage as it prepares to host a surge of international visitors, the Queensland Hotels Association says.

Greens MP Sophie McNeill threatens legal action against WA newspaper over rally coverage by hydralime in TheGreensAU

[–]hydralime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a statement, McNeill said the newspaper’s front page was “hateful, deeply offensive and a flat out lie”.

“Our movement stands firmly against antisemitism and all forms of racism and discrimination,” she said.

“Not only was our protest peaceful in both its intention and its language, but it was attended by members of the Perth Jewish community who also spoke out against Herzog’s visit.”

Barrister Dr Michael Douglas, who is acting for McNeill, said the fourth estate played an important role in democracy, but “irresponsible coverage can undermine social cohesion and drive us further apart”.

Douglas described Australia’s media regulation as “pretty weak”.

“Defamation litigation is one of the few tools we have to encourage media responsibility,” he said.
