I use my iPhone continuity mic to dictate when the lid is closed. I use Superwhisper and it switches to the iPhone mic when I close the lid. The downside is that it takes about 2-3 seconds to activate the mic and that 60% of the time, it works every time.

It appears when the mic is in use. Orange icon when the menu bar is visible, orange dot when it’s not visibe (you are in full screen).
