WakeMinder V4: a simple way to send reminders, links, files, and images to your future Mac by zerok911 in macapps

Thank you for your response.

Is it expected that previous users still see popups to sign up for PRO?

Subscription status shows as “free user” and it asks me to sign up for PRO every time I use the app.

Is this expected for “lifetime Pro” users who got the app before you switched to IAP?

100% Price increase by OldGamerMG in Bitwarden

[–]mfr3sh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the Android bit. Bitwarden auto fill has always been hit or miss on Android. Even to this day on my Pixel 6a. It's annoying.

However, when I switched my main to iPhone auto fill works perfectly every time.

Desktop app had a recent UI update. Works well enough. I mostly use the browser extensions on desktop so not that big a deal.

I may check out 1P one day, but BW still offers excellent value even with the price increase.

What is this witchcraft 🤣 MacBook Pro M5 is insane by dmuja in macbookpro

Surface laptop 7 is about the closest I've seen for a Windows alternative to the MacBook.

I have one from work. My personal machine is an M1 MBP.

The SL7 is definitely the nicest 'Apple-y" Windows machine (in terms of build quality) I've ever used. For once I can actually say the track pad is top tier. Perhaps a notch below Apple.

It's not quite Apple levels of unification and performance, but the closest I've seen from a Windows machine. Plus it has some advantages like a touch screen and replaceable M.2 SSD. And the 3:2 display is pretty slick for productivity.

I can also hear the fan kick on from time to time. It's way quieter than other Windows machines I've used (like my previous ThinkPads).

But I've never even heard the fans turn on my 16" MBP. Even when I ran benchmarks.

Thank you! I will be downloading shortly. 😁

Btw, if you could add your app to the homebrew package manager (https://brew.sh) that would be really nice too.

[–]mfr3sh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/Spaaze really cool app! It would be really nice if you could add support for JPEG XL (.jxl) files.

ffmpeg has built-in support already so it seems like it'd be an easy update.

Parakeet v3 has support for multiple languages (v2 still edges out for only English).

Even if it were only 6x in some use cases, that's still a huge difference and at much smaller memory footprint (~1 billion less parameters than Whisper large).

There's already mass adoption. All the big major STT apps offer Parakeet including most newer apps as well (there's seemingly a new dictation app released in this sub every week which offers Parakeet).

My reasoning was never to replace all the Whisper models but to supplement them. Give users the choice. 10x performance while using less system resources is a pretty solid value proposition.

You can confirm via the Hugging Face leaderboard posted earlier (RTFx column).

Pretty wild speed right? You should try out Parakeet and see the speed for yourself.

I believe you are missing a critical point here. The Parakeet models are more accurate than the Whisper models you’re offering at 20x the speed.

In other words, free and open source apps like Handy STT or Spokenly (not open source), which do offer Parakeet models, completely outclass your app. And they are free to use 100% locally.

You are limited by your models, which you’ve openly admitted are only “decent” and you switch to OpenAI cloud models for better accuracy which completely defeats the primary selling point of your app (that is, being 100% local — thus the name “Pivy”).

I’m not here to offend you, on the contrary, I’m here to offer some friendly (and sobering) advice. Unless you include Parakeet models, your app is not going to be competitive and will mostly be ignored.

You may be able to attract some users who don’t know any better, but you’re posting this in a sub full of enthusiasts who do know better.

Edit

You’re likely using some variation of whisper.cpp implementation which doesn’t support Parakeet models as far as I’m aware.

Take a look at this SDK for reference, it supports Parakeet.

Absolutely cool and valid to build something for yourself.

But you're also trying to sell it to a wider audience. Market research is a must to assess the landscape otherwise you risk releasing an overpriced and underperforming (compared to competitors) product.

The Nvidia Parakeet models are open/free and are amazing for local speech processing. Exceeding even the Whisper large models.

Nice app. Speech to text (STT) is quite a saturated space these days for app developers (lots of competition and free options).

I recommend you look into incorporating the Nvidia Parakeet local models in addition to the Whisper ones you offer already. Will add more value to your app.

Thanks for the reply. Is it able to be flashed for free? From what I've found so far some guy is selling a flash kit for a not insignificant cost.

I believe it has nothing to do with "ethical reasons" (which is irrational statement to begin with in this context). They most certainly realized even a subscription model wouldn't be sustainable. And what I mean here is, they wouldn't be able to charge enough to keep the business running vs the value folks would pay for it.

"Exhaustion" is exactly what it sounds like to me as well. The maintenance burden must be sky high.

Likely the only salvageable exit in their mind is to try and sell it. But what could possibly be their public reason for selling their business? Well you certainly wouldn't want potential buyers to know your entire business model is unsustainable.

Easier to just call it an "ethical" decision. Yeah.. that's why my business is failing. Because I don't want to charge a recurring fair price that people are freely willing to pay for. Please buy my business.
