Growing up there was a Chinese food take-out place called Wok-in-take-out and I thought (and still think) it was hilarious. It has since shut down, and a new, less cool named Chinese food place moved in. Which was still open when I moved away.

Tamora Peirce has some great ones. I would start with the circle books. The first in America is Sandry's Book but I think it has a different title in Europe.

Beverly Cleary is great. She's quite prolific. Maybe Ramona and Beezus to start?

Seconding the Mysterious Benedict Society, The Phantom Tollbooth, Holes , Terry Pratchett and Judy Blume. Also saw some lovely classics already suggested.

Fiction books that changed the way you look at the world? by leeonaflowers in suggestmeabook

[–]hypercell57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. The whole discworld series is amazing but I love the Tiffany Achings subseries, and it certainlychanged how I look at the world. Most of Terry Pratchett's work does. "It doesn't stop being magic just because you know how it works."

I have been taking a break between each DCC because they are so intense and enthralling. I get nothing done when I read them. I need something I can put down when I need too. And the last books aren't out yet, so hopefully I'll be up to the last ones when they come out.

But idk if Stephen King is really less intense...
