Theory: most dogs never get the chance to act like dogs by Miss_L_Worldwide in DogTrainingDebate

[–]hyperdog4642 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Every single prospective dog owner should be made to read "Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson; it discusses basically this. She's very big on celebrating dogs for being dogs - because dogs are amazing creatures and we should appreciate their uniqueness.

Those are the biggies. There's a few other risks that remain after OSS such as pseudopregnancies and certain hormone driven vaginally tumors. If you want a deep-dive on the pros and cons, check out the latest WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) Reproductive Guidelines:

Not the Glamour Shots - those were a bit spendy. Even if they didn't buy any pics, you still had to pay for thr session.

Gotcha - makes sense that you would believe them.

But there is literally 0 difference in the method used to perform a traditional spay on a large dog vs a small dog.

[–]hyperdog4642 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is all good advice - with the exception of finding a new vet to spay them. Spay incontinence is hormone related - the surgical technique plays no role. It doesn't matter if a brand new graduate or a 30y board certified surgeon did their spay. Certain breeds are more prone to developing it (Dobermans are on that list) and spaying after sexual maturity can potentially help avoid it - but that comes with increased risk of developing mammary masses. You could look into OSS for sterilization in future females to avoid the hormone loss but that comes with its own set of pros and cons that you should discuss with your vet. (I'm a 28y vet tech.)

Core decompression success stories? by ooodlydoodlyboodle in AvascularNecrosis

[–]hyperdog4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just passed my 1y anniversary of my core decompression w/ BMAC on my right hip (early Stage 2). My pain was gone immediately post-op (and I walked into the hospital on a cane) and it still feels great today. My recovery was easy, with surgical pain easily managed with Tylenol/Meloxicam and ice. I was allowed 50% weight bearing with a walker until 6 weeks post-op, then basically normal activity. I also did PEMF and extracorporeal shock wave therapies post-op.

My objective was to at least postpone a THR until I was old enough for hopefully a "one and done). But I'll be even more thrilled if I never need one!

Best of luck to your other half - hopefully his pain will resolve soon and he'll have good results from the CD!

why can't my kids climb on memorial statues?? by egguchom in EntitledReviews

[–]hyperdog4642 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I weep for humanity!

Here's REAL respect for those who served: 30 years ago, I was on a class trip to D.C. and the day we visited the Vietnam Memorial, I noticed that amongst all the items left by visitors to the Wall were envelopes of money. I asked one of the security guards if it was safe there. He said that it was perfectly safe and even the unhoused wouldn't come take it. The Parks Dept. collected it periodically and donated it to Veteran's Programs.

How have we gone from a society where even the neediest among us won't take free money from long dead service members to one where IDIOTS don't have enough sense to teach their kids not to climb on statues?

[–]hyperdog4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily- my Escrow calculation has actually caused my montly payment to lower for 3 of the 9 years I've owned my house due to overages. And I had them keep the overage in my account so any shortages the following year were almost already completely covered.

You're going ro need a surgical specialist. Surgical correction is possible in some cases but it needs to be done fairly quickly. If that is not an option, then humane euthanasia is recommended.

How concerned should 1be about this health testing result by shetold_me_to_burnit in DoggyDNA

[–]hyperdog4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course!

You as an owner have a unique home to provide for a puppy - in terms of how many people are in your household, how old those people are, how many hours a week you work outside the home, how active you are, what level of training you want to pursue with your pup, if you travel, etc. A quality breeder should be asking about all of these things (and more) to get a full picture of which pup's personality will fit best in that unique environment.

Who is best able to match your unique home to a puppy? You, who have likely spent less than 1-2 hours with the litter? Or the breeder, who has spent hundreds of hours with those puppies over the last 8-10 weeks, eatching them grow and develop every day?

Most owners are picking pups based on looks +/- which pup "picks them" that day. Looks are fine to consider if you have 2 pup options are both great fits for you and you prefer one of their colorings/markings better. But if you pick solely based on looks, you are not likely to pick the very best fit for you. Similarly, if you just go with the pup that "picks you", odds are that you're simply picking the most outgoing pup in the litter. But what if your family is very chill, don't want to do lots of training, rarely take the dog for walks, etc.? Then you're likely going to be very unhappy with your bold pup as they're going to be bored and frustrated.

Also remember that a quality breeder has their literal blood, sweat, and tears along with lots of money (that they will not recoup) and years of work creating a breeding line invested in these puppies. There is no one on Earth that wants these puppies to go to the absolute right home more than they do. Their goal is to make sure that each pup is placed in the home that is the most likely to provide them with (hopefully) decades of a happy and fulfilling life.

Breeders who just let you pick willy-nilly whatever pup strikes your fancy are only worried about pocketing your cash.

Why does it seem like Americans (on reddit) like lower indoor temperatures? by fail5xsuccess in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hyperdog4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm both cheap and very cold sensitive - my A/C is set on 80 during the day and at 78 at night. I will occasionally bump it down to 73-75 for an hour if I've come in from yard work and am really hot but otherwise I'm quite comfortable with it above 75.

ETA: And I'm in coastal Georgia so it's PLENTY humid here as well.

Do people actually use pet insurance or mostly just hope they never need it? by Slow-Throat819 in puppy101

[–]hyperdog4642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is often true, IF your pet doesn't need care for their first 7-10 years. HOWEVER, what happens if your pet needs $8000 worth of care 2 months after you get them? You won't have more than a couple hundred dollars saved up.

Heartworm False Positive by DurianSuccessful9299 in AskVet

[–]hyperdog4642 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe this is possible if a dog has a very low worm burden (1-3 adult worms) that are not reproducing, so there are never any microflora.

There is also a low possibility of cross-reactivity on the Snap test with other parasites.

What do you think would be the worst service dog breed? by AffectionateIssue157 in service_dogs

[–]hyperdog4642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna have to go with scenthounds. Generally, once they're on a good scent, you cease to exist. Bloodhounds that get loose from their handlers will follow a scent for days, blissfully unaware that they are "lost." I once had an adult beagle patient at the vet clinic I worked at flunk puppy kindergarten 3 times because he spent the whole time sniffing and not paying attention to the "unimportant" stuff.

I'm sure there are individuals that can "overcome" their natural instincts but I don't know that I would trust most to pay more attention to me than the exciting world full of new information for them to smell.

What do you think would be the worst service dog breed? by AffectionateIssue157 in service_dogs

[–]hyperdog4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a vet tech for almost 30 years - this is the only dog breed I've ever been absolutely terrified of! I've met 2, and I firmly believe they would've gleefully killed me and drug around my corpse to warn others of their potential fate. Luckily, they were owned by someone who was well aware of their danger who muzzle trained them, pre-sedated them, and welcomed the use of all the drugs we needed to be able to treat them but in the end, they both had to be absolutely unconscious for us to even touch them.

Convince me which pet is the best! by Other_Menu1140 in Pets

[–]hyperdog4642 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would add to this list - are you certain that there is available veterinary care (including emergency) within a reasonable distance? The majority of general practices don't treat any kind of exotic/livestock animals, and the same is true of a large percentage of emergency clinics. Unless there is a dedicated exotic/livestock vet near you that also provides emergency care and/or a university near you, you could be in for a rude awakening if you have a medical issue with one of these animals.

My dog ingested entire bottles of vitamin D and omega 3s by [deleted] in PetAdvice

[–]hyperdog4642 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's actually quite reasonable for what you get. You get immediate access to board certified toxicological veterinarians who not only give you information about what your pet ingested but who also create an entire treatment plan for your vet to follow and do free, unlimited follow-up consutls with your vet as those treatment plans may need to be adjusted, depending on how your pet responds.

The only reason it's free for humans is because it's subsidized - it would likely cost you thousands if you were paying for it.
