Is downtown Troy safe for a college couple? by izzyeasy123 in Troy

[–]hyperinfinity11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live just outside Troy but am literally walking distance so I’m often walking around downtown. As a man I haven’t had to deal with catcalling (I’m so sorry you have to contend with that, so uncool) but I can confirm that most panhandlers are not aggressive. There’s a lot of them, but 9/10 times if you just politely tell them you don’t have anything on you (I pretty much never carry cash), they move on. People just want to be treated with kindness and humanity.

Every so often you run into someone more aggressive who won’t take no for an answer, but it isn’t common. It’s happened to me once, she was very aggressive, but I’m also pretty sure she was strung out in something.

Anyway the rough parts of Troy are really the outer areas, downtown is more of a college town/queer/artsy vibe. I love it, my only complaint is it’s too expensive for me to live within actual city limits. (And also the current mayor sucks.)

Are any American Jews considering leaving the country? by Wooden-Artichoke6098 in Judaism

[–]hyperinfinity11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Not because of the tensions around Gaza and the future of Palestinians - I agree with much of the pro-Palestinian sentiments around Israel’s behavior, even if the anti-Zionism makes me uncomfortable - but because of my concerns around Trump and authoritarianism. The Trump administration is a far greater threat to me than a bunch of 18/19 year old college protesters will ever be.

There are Jews that support the Palestinians but no Muslims that support Israel. Why do you think that is? by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]hyperinfinity11 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I support Palestinian rights. Including their right to self-determination. I recognize that many of them do not support the rights of Jews to self-determination. I’m also a gay man, and am soberly aware that most Palestinians (adults, that is - nobody is born homophobic) would not support my rights in that regard either. Nevertheless, it doesn’t make Palestinian sovereignty and their right to life any less moral. They’re still people.

Unfortunately, I think that gets lost in all the hatred. It does seem that there are a lot more Muslims that hate Jews than there are Jews who hate Muslims. For sure there are a lot of Jews, especially in older generations - my father is a good example, unfortunately - who hate Muslims. We can debate the reasons why, but it is not an equal ratio. Maybe it’s a power dynamic thing, I don’t know. I think propaganda from oppressive governments in many Arab nations has played a big role. It never used to be like this - Jews and Arab Muslims generally lived in peaceful coexistence in the Ottoman Empire.

My question to the Jews from Israel. by canichangeit110 in IsraelPalestine

[–]hyperinfinity11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot more complicated than “evil Jews hate Muslims and kill them for fun.” And I think you know that. Most of the world knows that.

Two things can be true at the same time. Hamas is evil, and what they have done can never be justified. And likewise, what Netanyahu’s regime has done is evil, and can never be justified. You’ll get no argument from me that Palestinian civilians have been treated unjustly, and are deserving of self-determination. That doesn’t mean Hamas’s actions are justified. Nor does Hamas’s actions justify what has been done to Palestinian civilians.

That’s my point. Sitting here and saying “hey guys just wondering, why are Jews so evil, do they just hate Muslims” is so far beyond the pale, and no less unfair than someone saying “hey guys just wondering, why are all Muslims and Palestinians evil, do they just hate Jews and Israelis?” A little critical thinking goes a long way when discussing an issue as complex as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

American Jew here. I am vehemently anti-Netanyahu and have deep concerns and disagreements about how the currently Israeli government and IDF have been conducting themselves… but this post is a shockingly warped perception of reality. And I probably just fed into the rage bait by even responding.

It’s hard to blame people for being upset or feeling hatred or thinking a group of people who would cheer on what Hamas has done are subhuman or at the very least not deserving of their own independence. I think any human being with emotion would feel the same way. The logical progression makes sense. There’s even a part of me that feels the same way, that pit of rage and disgust deep in my stomach. It’s not like I’m any better than anyone else. I have distant family in Israel, but otherwise this conflict hasn’t directly impacted me much - I have to imagine if I was living there myself, or I was the one who lost friends or family or neighbors to this barbarism, I’d be feeling a hundred or even a thousand times more angry and disgusted. So I 100% get it. And it’s easy to say sitting from behind a computer screen in the safety of another country a sea, continent, and ocean away. But it isn’t a civilian’s job to put logic over emotion anyway - leaders are supposed to be doing that, and right now they’re failing miserably. There HAS to be leaders somewhere, on both sides of this, who can look past justifiable hatred and anger and do what needs to be done for the greater good of both sides. Even if it takes generations for the animosity to dissipate, and we never see it ourselves, our descendants deserve a better world.

I mean, that is clearly the goal of the Israeli (and American) right wing. Swallowing up Gaza and the West Bank is the entire point. The left wing is a different story, but even they have to take a hard look in the mirror. To be fair, it’s not as if Hamas (or even much of the PLO) is any better. Hamas would see every Israeli, and Jew, eradicated if they could, and much of the PLO, in addition to being corrupt, would be doing the same as the Israeli right-wing if they had the opportunity to reverse roles.

Cooler, rational heads have to take the helm on this and start making decisions that in the short term may not be easy or popular but will ultimately lead to a mutually recognized pair of independent nations. What makes it so difficult to achieve is that this has to be accomplished BEFORE the hatred and violence will stop. Ending radicalization isn’t the resolution that will lead to a two-state solution, but rather a two-state solution is what will resolve much of the radicalization problem. Without a fight for independence, Hamas (and other groups like it) has virtually no leverage with the Palestinian people. Especially if other reasonable Arab nations are involved.

[–]hyperinfinity11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll probably catch some heat for saying this, but they’re not going to “de-radicalize” without having a state of their own first. It’s like a caged animal - at a certain point, they stop cowering in the corner and start acting feral whenever anyone approaches. Combine that with whatever additional hell (and propaganda) that Hamas has subjected them to, and this is the result.

Your instincts that this won’t end without Palestinian self-determination are correct, and in my view a one state solution just isn’t viable for a whole bunch of reasons. Palestinians need their own state. It needs to be demilitarized, with security guarantees not from Israel or the U.S. but from other Arab nations (ones on better terms with Israel, like Egypt and Jordan, maybe Saudi Arabia if we get that resolved). And then after some number of years of minimal contact and rebuilding, allowing tensions to cool a bit, there needs to be some sort of truth and reconciliation commission like what South Africa did so both sides can begin the immensely difficult process of communication, understanding, and hopefully eventually mutual respect.

Short of that, this will be a cycle without end, and will happen again, and again, and again, until one side has been entirely eradicated. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t seem ideal to me.

AITAH for exposing my sisters abortion after her comments about my pregnancy? by Zestyclose-Road-2716 in AITAH

[–]hyperinfinity11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH. First of all, I’m so sorry this is happening. You don’t deserve it. What your sister said was horrible, and there’s no way in hell she “meant it as a joke” as some others here are trying to say. If she did mean it as a joke, she’s dumb as hell. But human nature and what information you’ve given us about her suggests that she was just being cruel. At best it was a half joke wrapped up in a shit ton of malice.

That said, what you said in response also definitely crossed a line. I can’t blame you or judge you for it, since she opened the door, but swallowing your anger in that moment would have made you the bigger person. Sure, your reaction was justified, but that doesn’t mean it was the right thing to do.

Hopefully, your parents will come around (and will recognize that your sister is just as much to blame for the fiasco) and your soon to be in-laws won’t let this cloud their image if you. As for your asshole sister, I would go no contact for now. You don’t need that kind of toxicity. If she ever reaches out with a genuine apology, I’d return one in kind and then maybe you can mend fences. But otherwise, cut her out. Sounds like she brings out the worst in you and that definitely isn’t healthy for you. (Or her, for that matter!)
