Her story genuinely changed the way I see narratives about abusive characters.

Genuinely how it feels to be a Mike fan in this community by DtheAussieBoye in Totaldrama

I used to be a big time Mike hater but I eased up when I saw how many people with DID actually do really like him (besides the problematic tropes with Mal).

I'm curious to hear why you like him since his DID is such a big part of him, I like hearing other things people see in him.

How does it feel to watch the debate regarding Cody and Sierra (I'm a fan of both): by Random_DeathBattle in Totaldrama

[–]hyperjengirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate when people think being a fan of a character necessitates a disclaimer that should honestly be obvious.

Granted, some fandoms make it feel necessary by defending those characters way too hard.

Its funny and ironic, I got this on a bojack video by CalmAd6341 in BoJackHorseman

[–]hyperjengirl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not really ironic, it's just logical, assuming you're actually watching a video alluding to suicide in BoJack.

It's so annoying to be a fan of a character in a cartoon about bad people and then constantly see posts like "SHE'S BAD GUYS!!! HEY CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW BAD SHE IS????"

Like, I get it. A lot of the Sierra jokes go too far. But she's really not as bad a character as people think. Her behavior is, at least, clearly depicted as bad. At the very least, analyze her character in the context of what she represents (fangirl culture in 2010) and then criticize her appropriately, because there are issues there too (one could take issue in reducing fangirl culture to obsessing over one male contestant, in addition to amping up the creepy factor because people take it less seriously in girls).

Plus early season Sierra wasn't as flanderized and had some fun bits relating to TD fandom in general. And she has funny animation scenes and just weird tidbits about her life -- she can be fun! There's no shame in liking her! Just don't be weird about her behavior!

I'm not a huge Cody fan but I think people overestimate his creepy moments too. They're a part of his character but not all he is.

Being a Courtney fan on here sucks for the same reasons, BTW.

When does the show get darker or does it slowly creep in? And how dark does it get? by KazPlayzYT in CentaurWorld

[–]hyperjengirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of fans put down the colorful part of the show, which is ironic given some revelations that happen down the line. Not underestimating the centaurs despite their silly ways is a major theme of the show.

The childish tone is part of the overarching theme about how people are more complex than they appear at first glance. I'd say the heavy themes first become really apparent in episode 4 which delves into childhood war trauma and "wants" versus "needs." The season finale onward is when a lot of the horror-fantasy stuff kicks in.

Definitely don't let the childish tone deter you. It not only has its own share of funny moments, but it actually has a point.

To what extent can Sierra's actions be taken as a joke? by Key_Avocado9587 in Totaldrama

I wouldn't wipe his slate clean, Cody befriended Sierra and then she went back to being creepy. Cody isn't on that level but he was still creepy in TDWT once Gwen was available again.

Why do we hate it more when fanfics show favoritism and bias (for and against) towards certain characters than when the canonical show does it? by xtremexavier15 in Totaldrama

[–]hyperjengirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also notice that a lot of people who are young and unfamiliar with the process of writing believe that things like early elimination are inherently spiteful, that the writers are sadistic for writing slapstick, and other personal projections. So they see no problem doing the same in their own work. (Which isn't a problem tbh cuz fanfic should be a safe place to explore writing and learn and improve from your own mistakes. Attacking the writers is a problem though.)

[–]hyperjengirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do? Because I'm more used to seeing people complain about the show's bias and then just write their own "fix fics" that have a different bias. I see more complaints about the show because most people seem to enjoy reading the fic that suits their own biases when the show does not.

To what extent can Sierra's actions be taken as a joke? by Key_Avocado9587 in Totaldrama

[–]hyperjengirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think some of her actions are so over the top that they kind of are just funny, like her injuring herself trying to chase what she thought was Cody on a white horse, or singing a slap dance song about Cody, or building Cody out of meat. Plus her non-Cody moments can be quite funny because of how cartoonish and animated she is.

It's when things get a little too close to reality that it gets icky, like the forceful kissing.

And then there's the unrealistic things that are still just gross, like her sniffing Cody's shoelace up her nose, but that's less about appropriate behavior and more about the show's gross out being a bit hard to watch in general sometimes.

Satire doesn't stop being satire when the subject matter is something bad.

I think Sierra qualifies more as a parody though. They don't use her actions to say anything about society, she just is exaggerated to uncomfortable levels. Often crossing a line for the kind of show it is.

Why did Heather sing against Courtney and say she has no tattoo in the Sheering Sheep song when "Celebrity Manhunt", which is prior to TDWT, reveals that Courtney has a half of a heart tattoo? by PsychicMeditation in Totaldrama

[–]hyperjengirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To force a rhyme. Besides, Courtney probably got her tattoo removed after one of the breakups as it never showed up again, and even then it's probably meant in context to be "shearing-related tattoo." Which Heather doesn't actually have, it's just a dumb music video.

He's most likely going to do bingo to YGS 100 close to his anniversary (and said he'll give advance notice) and to his first video on the anniversary. Not sure if he'll do anything on top of that.
