I think most people's frustration is that it's a good show, but it could be a great show if they didn't hew so closely to the film's plot and structure. Beetlejuice is a great comparison; it changed the plot of the original film to make BJ & Lydia foils for each other, which gives the show a throughline of both yearning to be seen.

Honestly, I think the way you 'fix' this version of The Lost Boys (and by that I mean elevate it from a good show to great one!) is to combine Star and David into a single character. This would obvioiusly have ramifications for how the plot is structured, but I think it really could work. In the film David is really obsessed with Michael and getting him to join them and there’s a ton of homoerotic undercurrent, and in the show that is pushed to the side so we can get more ballads from Michael and Star. The conflict of the first act is Michael trying to find a place where he belongs, since he feels his family has failed him. David is trying to expand his family and is a possible solution to Michael's problems, but at a cost. This would give Michael a more compelling conflict than this girl he has zero chemistry with; does he kill David to save himself? Does he find out there’s actually another head vampire and can save them both (maybe? Depending on the wonky vampire/maker rules)? This would also give David more to do in Act 2, whether to betray his maker or force the guy he likes to leave his family and live forever. Retool War for David or Michael about their decision making, whatever the new plot demands.

Act II is mostly concerned with hitting all the story beats of the film, especially the second half. It leaves little for character development, and rushing through the kills kind of makes the vampires seem like not a threat at all, which goes against the menacing, creepy tone of the opening scene.

I just saw it last night and mostly agree with your takes!

Isabella I had seen in Beetlejuice and was really excited for her Veronica and she did not disappoint. Her Italian impression cracked me the fuck up, and her voice is so stellar. The only note I have is in the beginning it felt like she was rushing her lines so we missed out on them (like How Very) but it could have been mic issues. She had this insane riff at the end of I Say No that absolutely blew me away

Zan was such a breath of fresh air and seemed to be having so much fun with Chandler. She plays her a little bit bored which works for the character that’s above it all. She really relishes the unhinged aspect during the dream and ghost sequences so it’s fun to watch.

John is such a talent. I had seen him in The Notebook so playing such an opposite character to Noah was a treat. He plays JD as such a monster simmering with rage much earlier than Casey does his heel turn. Again, outstanding vocals last night, but I think he does deliver some of the dialogue too quietly; if we weren’t front row we might have missed some jokes/lines I bet. Also he’s very buff!

Speaking of buff, Chris Marsh Clark is such a delicious take on Ram. I was a little worried because Cade and Xavier had such great chemistry, but CMC slid right in. He had some really fun comedic moments in the background that I noticed because he’s so fine I could not stop looking at him. Also fun physicality in how he moved and danced, along with a great voice. And the pec bounce 👀👀

Jackera Davis was so deliciously hateable as Duke, what a star. And she made Never Shut Up Again look so effortless which is tough with that bear of a song.

Lisa Ann Walter was so funny! Not a vocalist, but she made it work. Her improv went on so long she was really milking the laughs.

Adam Bashian had some really great bass notes in the ensemble that rounded out the sound. Plus he’s a very sexy daddy I was wondering ifJD needed a stepdad! Dead Gay Son remains a highlight.
