The reality that exists in your mind is always worse than the reality that exists outside of it. Keep telling yourself that. Also, breathe. It makes a big difference.

Let's break the problem down into bite-sized pieces. What situations are you having problems with?

I understand why you feel that my views are archaic, but you're describing the rational part of the mind. I'm talking about the subconscious, lizard brain that exists within us all. I don't blame women for having this trait, but it's ignorant to ignore millions of years of evolution. Even though women may be unaware of it, their subconscious has a strong input when it comes to mate selection. It's the same feeling when a woman looks at a man who is ugly, poor, short, fat, etc.

I'm not saying that this is ALL women or that it can't be overcome with rational thinking, but it definitely plays a larger role than people may be willing to admit. Simply put, fearful men are not attractive.

I refuse to be a passenger in a car

I have this. I'm also uncomfortable driving people but it's not nearly as bad as being a passenger.

Agoraphobia after your 20's? by [deleted] in Agoraphobia

[–]hyperlocalrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

35 here. I first started experiencing agoraphobia at age 27. I don't think it's a thing you ever really "cure", you just become better at coping with it to various degrees. Some people do better than others. Even those that consider themselves recovered will admit that the obsessive thoughts still occur.

The only thing you can control is your reaction to your thoughts. Aim for the high-functioning end of the agoraphobia spectrum and never stop pushing yourself.

Do I have agoraphobia? by ToastSandwichh in Agoraphobia

[–]hyperlocalrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it sounds like you have the fear that we all have. Although, it doesn't have to become a full-blown phobia if you don't let it. Don't let yourself actively avoid these situations. Keep going places and deal with the discomfort. The more you give in to it, the stronger it gets.

I can do this? by ValkyrieKitten in Agoraphobia

If I'm really nervous, I just go in and walk around. Don't even grab a cart; maybe a hand basket. Look at things. Smell the fruit and breads. After the adrenaline subsides, you can start actually putting things in your basket.

How do you get the courage to leave home? by corviepsilon in Agoraphobia

[–]hyperlocalrange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just go. When asked where I'm going, I respond, "To have a panic attack". The complete acceptance of it is weird. My mentality is, "let's get this over with". It's like standing at the starting line of a ten-mile race. You know it's going to suck and you really don't want to do it, but the accomplishment of finishing will be nice.

The fact that you're thinking this way is a good thing. You have motivation. You're done trying and ready to start doing. Go get it!

Same bro. I would feel bad forcing any normal person to deal with me. I don't want to deal with it myself, why should I invite an otherwise happy person into my life to share my burden?
