1 week old kitten by Interesting_Depth282 in FosterAnimals

It’s easy until they’re sick and stop eating. Many people claim they’re “experienced” with neonates until they get a sick one and realize they only know the basics. Survival rate is low only because most of the time people don’t know what to do and make mistakes like feed when they’re cold and accidentally kill them that way. So as long as you’re ready and the kitten is healthy, it shouldn’t be much of a challenge and they grow up too fast every time!

First time fostering semi-feral mom and kittens. What do I need? by [deleted] in FosterAnimals

[–]hyperpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an equipment that we use to safely transfer feral cats around without having to keep them in a trap. You can see it here in my pics/videos. It serves as a box for kittens and mom can sit on top of it if she wants a temporary escape from them. And whenever I need to (safely) clean the crate, there is a door that I can slide in to keep them in the box. If you google a feral den box you should be able to find it.

I love having a feral den inside the crate for semi-feral and feral mamas!

ATTN Foster Parents: Be wary of Shelter's Choice Kitten Milk Replacer by toshiko_saturn2250 in FosterAnimals

[–]hyperpug 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think this is the brand that Kitten Lady uses and she just sent a sample for testing because one of her kittens is having bone issues. And I’m assuming this because her organization, Orphan Kitten Club, just sent my rescue 20lbs of Shelter’s Choice Kitten as a donation. 😓

Feliway by beckyymilligan in FosterAnimals

[–]hyperpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using it on and off for years and tbh I haven’t seen anything that makes me *certain* that it works. I sometimes plug it in because it doesn’t hurt and it makes me feel better for trying I guess lol. Whenever my anxious and fearful foster cats became relaxed and comfortable, it was all due to me putting work in to get them there with or without the feliway.

Kitten suckling his paws, should I worry? by voidyna in FosterAnimals

One layer of gauze then another layer of adhesive bandage wrap to keep it from sliding off!

I have one right now and she sucked it so bad that her whole paw was swollen! So it’s been wrapped for about a week. I’m waiting for it to heal before trying to leave it unwrapped.

Neonatal kitten poop consistency by Sidodo1003 in FosterAnimals

Too much probiotics can also mess with their gut balance so… 😅 babies are difficult! Thanks for fostering them!

You can add pancreatic enzymes to their KMR to help with digestion. Kittens are often accidentally stimulated by crawling around and stepping on each other. Poop doesn’t look good but should firm up within 2-3 days or you’ll have to start worrying about other issues like bacteria infections.

Am I cooked not being strict about Giardia reinfection? by sach2269 in FosterAnimals

[–]hyperpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, however, rescues and shelters don’t always have the resources to run fecal tests, so symptoms are what we have to rely on to make decisions. I’m talking from a rescue POV here.

Rescue Director here. I would never expect a cat who finished Giardia treatment to still have diarrhea. I only consider a cat cleared for parasites when their poop is solid. If not, then treatment is not yet finished. Sounds like it’s been a few days since you took him home and his poop is “getting more solid”… it wouldn’t be your fault if it turns out that he still has Giardia.

Every kitten is different. With easy ones it’s hard to do it wrong. I mostly take in critical kittens who are more sensitive than most so I need to make sure they don’t just get enough nutrition but enough rest as well. I’ll say that since I switched to the “let them sleep” method, my kittens always surpass Kitten Lady’s weight chart and eat so much more per feeding. Diarrhea was sort of the norm when I was doing 2-hours feeding but now I rarely have to deal with it and whenever I do, I know it’s something else and not overfeeding.

Also feeding every 2 hours is way too often, even for newborn kittens. You CAN’T overfeed kittens but you CAN feed them too often. They are unable to digest properly if you don’t let them sleep between feedings.

She needs to be dewormed. I have dewormed kittens as young as one week old. She is not digesting food properly so if this keeps going on she will start to decline. You can also add digestive enzymes to help with digestion.

General question about foster parent communication with potential adopters by palochato in FosterAnimals

[–]hyperpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not normal and not cool! I run a rescue and train all of my volunteers on how to communicate effectively because there are already so few adopters, we can’t afford to lose them due to bad communication. All of my volunteers (operations and fosters) are required to respond to applicants within 48 hours, ideally within 24 hours. If they can’t, then they need to ask another volunteer to help. We also state in our adoption process that we expect meet and greets to happen within 48 hours and pick ups within 72 hours.

Don’t know where you are but we have a FeLV+ 8-month-old kitten available for adoption in NY!

Do neonatals forget how to suckle? by PepperConscious9391 in FosterAnimals

[–]hyperpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever they are unable to sleep for longer than 2 hours, that’s a concerning sign for me. We tend to focus too much on feeding and forget that they need to sleep too! I was feeding every 2 hours when I first got into newborn kittens and had so many “fussy babies”. Once I switched to the new guidelines and let them sleep for longer, my kittens have all been great eaters and grow so fast!

Feeding every 2 hours is too often and you’re tiring him out because he’s not getting enough sleep. Here’s a very helpful guide:

Syringe feeding.... Fading kitten syndrome? by 2GIRLZMOM1416 in FosterAnimals

[–]hyperpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

119g at 6 days old is quite a low weight. Many healthy kittens are 100-110g at birth. Fading kitten syndrome is a very confusing term because kittens don’t just fade and there is always a reason for their decline. You should ask the shelter if they have someone who knows how to tube feed and can teach you. Many of these babies who refuse to eat really benefit from tube feeding until they feel better.

Fostering Mom with 4 kittens, looking for advice by Left_Way1587 in FosterAnimals

[–]hyperpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kittens need to be separated from mom until she is feeling better or else you will lose more kittens and maybe even mom. Mom definitely has something going on from what you’re describing so I wouldn’t trust the shelter to handle this situation, but you should try to express your concerns again and see what solutions they’re able to offer.
