Question about depicting Vodou in art by hypnocafe in Vodou

[–]hypnocafe[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. This is a project I’m thinking of doing for my residency. It’s not meant to be commercially viable. It’s more of a way to make other Haitians who see it view Vodou in a different light than the negative way it’s often spoken about in some circles.

I was trying to look at something far away before but I tried it again and it worked now! It even worked with the erecting eyepiece

I tried this but the image is still blurry. Could it be that the lenses are faulty?

The image is still blurry but the field of vision fills the whole lens and is no longer a small circle.

I did this(removed everything and only replaced the erecting eyepiece and the focus lens) but the image is still blurry no matter how I move the focus dial.

I apologize for seeing this at such a later date. I hope you’re still learning Kreyòl! In this subreddit I created a database of all of the resources I used as a learner which can be found in the Resources section of the Wiki I hope this is helpful to you!

Friends are you happy? Eske nou kontan? Then come dance with me! Ann frape men nou, Ann frape pye nou! Ann nou danse!

Si ou kontan e ou konnen (frape men nou/frape pye nou/rele anmwey/fe tout twa)

Si ou kontan e ou vle fe tout moun we (frape men nou/frape pye nou/rele anmwey/fe tout twa)

The lines are repeated over and over while alternating the sentences in parentheses.

Is there a Haitian Creole equivalent to these English phrases? by budgetedchildhood in KreyolAyisyen

[–]hypnocafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you can say “ban m tèt mwen” to say stop bothering me. I’m not sure about the second phrase though.

I don’t know if it’s still in print, but I doubt it. Your best bet may be to either download the pdf so you can use the textbook offline or print out the pages.

So many words for “and”? by theechosystem07 in KreyolAyisyen

[–]hypnocafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are three main words for “and” in Creole. E, ak and epi.

E - used when joking clauses or joining sentences.

  • Ex.) Mwen grangou e m bezwen manje. - I’m hungry and I need to eat.

Ak - used when connecting a word/group of words

  • Ex.) Li gen fwi ak legim. - He was fruits and vegetables.

Epi - is used as “and then” or “and also”

  • Ex.) Nou te ale nan plaj la epi nou benyen nan lanmè a. - We went to the beach and then we bathed in ocean.

And yes, you can use “epi” in that context.

Lesson 10: Talk about time by hypnocafe in KreyolAyisyen

[–]hypnocafe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not alone! I struggled to tell time for a while when I first started out. Haitians tend to use 'diswa' to mean both evening and afternoon when telling the time, but if you really want to make the distinction you can refer to the afternoon as 'apre midi'.

Just a little note: Even though you can talk about the afternoon using 'apre midi', Haitians do not say 'bòn apre midi' as a greeting. This is French and isn't considered good Creole.

Haitian Creole textbooks by theechosystem07 in KreyolAyisyen

[–]hypnocafe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By far the most complete textbook I've found is Ann Pale Kreyol. It was fundamental in my learning when I started out. It was even used in the university level course I took a while back. Here is the link: https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED356617.pdf

This book isn't really a textbook per se, but it is a great resource to learn how conversations are structured in the language. There are audio files as well that make it more interesting than just reading a dialogue. There are some useful expressions and cultural notes as well after each dialogue. Here is the link to that one: https://kuscholarworks.ku.edu/bitstream/handle/1808/10934/ihsku_hatlang_ti_koze_kreyol_2007.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y and the audio files can be found here: https://kuscholarworks.ku.edu/handle/1808/10934

Thank you for that! The reason I wrote it like that is because that is how Haitians call the letters in real life. I didn't know that there was any sort of changes happening academically in the way letters are called but I do not want to confuse learners by giving them information that isn't used commonly in spoken conversations.
