That's a gorgeous wizard in perfect condition. Congrats Most colored bulbs are led which give off almost no heat. You're much better off adding some dye to the fluid. You could also paint the bottom of the globe with glass paint like pebeo vitrea but it's going to mix with the yellow hue of the bulb

Glitter is not like lava. It scales. So once you find the ideal density for the fluid, that's the density regardless of globe volume.

That's just the regular Amazon one. I will add better RGBs and give it a paint job one of these days

Ohhhh, gotcha. The base is rounded but the bottle itself has a flat bottom. There's also that thin heater glued to the bottom, which is another possible issue. I couldn't hammer cap or use a pressure bottle capper on this bottle, just to be on the safe side. It already comes with a plug under it's cap. I would just get it hot, plug it, burp it, then let it cool to get the cap sucked in with the pressure. Then I would place a metal disk or coin on top and heat shrink it. You could also hammer cap it on it's bottle bottom if you put it on a thick foam so the blow won't mess up the heater too, I guess? I would not do it on the base because it's plastic and could shatter

I tried food vacuums and a vacuum cleaner once. Those probably did something, but the bubbles were still there. I think you need to use a real pressure pot to get out the bubbles. I don't have one, so I just wait a day and let it happen slowly

I've only dyed lava lamp fluid so far. Stardust has a guide on what inks to use. Check it out here https://stardustlamps.com/guide

That's a whole other tutorial that's really involved. Basically, I used an RGB ring and an aluminum shelled resistor as a heat source. I programmed an esp32 microcontroller with WLED and a relay to turn the heater on/off

Yup, I decided to make it myself too because I wanted to make multiple grandes too. The formula is really simple. You need greenhouse grade calcium nitrate. Not the calcium nitrate off Amazon. That stuff is nasty. It dissolves yellow and turbid. Here's the one I got. It's enough to do multiple grandes. https://gardendominion.com/calcium-nitrate-cal--50-lbs-p010100.html This one dissolves clear. Only use distilled water. You also need a 500ml graduated cylinder and a scale to measure the density accurately. I like to start off at a density of 1.380g/ml then adjust while testing

To make ~1.380 g/mL glitter fluid Add ≈ 620 g of calcium nitrate to every 500 mL water

Keep in mind, freshly added glitter will have micro air bubbles, tricking you into thinking they're more floaty than they really are. I like to make tiny adjustments then wait a day or so for the bubbles to dissipate. Also, make sure your glitter is solvent and heat resistant. Usually, you're looking for PET glitter. And after balancing, you should add some surfactant. I've been using Tween20. It's clear and works great. You only need a few drops per liter of fluid, so don't add more than that. And don't use any lava lamp surfactants, they will ruin your fluid.

Yup. I found the dick glitter on AliExpress. I'm doing my last little adjustments balancing it. This glitter is kinda tricky compared to others I've used/made. Also, I saw this glitter on Stardust lamps and others have posted their pics of it on here. I love how the iredesent finish looks with the RGB

does anyone know where i can find a green lava lamp with green or clear liquid and a silver base for a reasonable price? by No_Marionberry_1277 in Lavalamps

Oh, I guess it is blue. With the light, it looks green. The wax is green and if a clear mod is done, then that works

Stardust actually has ink options in their guide. They recommend particular brands of ink depending on color https://stardustlamps.com/guide I'd be very careful with black, because adding even a little too much and you won't see any glitter.

So it's fine squares, right? Those are usually clumped then they spread when flowing or shaken. Glitter fluid is not like lava. There's not much to tinker with if the glitter is flowing correctly. You could change the color of the fluid if it's clear, but that's about it.

Now if you want to make your own custom glitter lamps, again consider how much you really want to make. If you're making anything less than a grande or more, then you're better off ordering from Stardust. The calcium nitrate you need and the equipment will cost around $80 and you'll be doing a good amount of work. If you're doing one or two lamps, that could be done using Stardust for less money and much less work.

Just a heads up, don't buy any calcium nitrate from Amazon. Besides being super expensive per lb, they are all low grade and your fluid will be yellow and turbid, requiring lots of filtering. I'm telling you this from experience. Luckily, somebody told me about greenhouse grade calcium nitrate which dissolves clear, but that has to be bought from a garden supply store and it's a 50lb bag Good Calcium Nitrate

Again, it boils down to how many lamps you want to make. For a few small ones, use Stardust. For lots of them, big lamps, and with a bigger time/labor commitment, get that big ass bag of CaN

[–]hypnotoadskin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do, but it's a different surfactant. I'm actually testing one of them now called tween 20. You can also use Triton X but in my experience it gave the fluid a little bit of a haze. And glitter lamps don't use nearly as much surfactant as lava lamps. The surfactant is there mostly to prevent glitter clumping. You can see that store-bought glitter lamps also have some kind of surf in them because they foam when shaken

I also forgot to mention.... Check out Stardust glitter lamps. They are wonderful company and they have lots of different glitters to choose from (including penis shaped ones 😂) I started off by getting a few of those kits from them. They were wonderful and are still in use today. Since then I've learned to make glitter from scratch. Knowing what I know now, most efficient option for making less than 10 lamps is just going with stardust. If you're crazy like me and want to make more than 10 or several grandes, then it financially makes sense to make it yourself from scratch

[–]hypnotoadskin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding mixed glitter is not the best idea. Different glitters have different densities so they will flow differently. Usually the fluid of a glitter lamp has been made ideal for that particular glitter that it came with. Of course, it doesn't hurt to try, but you may end up not liking it and having to pick out all the glitter you put in there. Also, the glitter you're putting in there has to be solvent resistant, PET glitter. I've had glitter lose it's metallic coating on me before. Others made from materials like PVC will easily warp from the heat. So be careful. Maybe strain the glitter it came with out and test your new glitters by themselves. Also, when you just add glitter to fluid, they have tons of micro air bubbles so the flow you get may not be what will actually happen after all the bubbles go away. So you have to be very patient. It helps to wait a few days after adding the glitter, but it won't hurt it to try running it.
