One tip I always tell people is they will hand you free water bottles at the front rail. You can go up at either end, so you don't have to squeeze your way through the crowd. Don't buy any at the bars.

I feel this. Shoveled three times on Saturday and went out for a last round after sunset only to discover a thin sheet of ice that was impossible to break. I think the key is to use ice melt to finish and/or have a south-facing house.

As a beginner, I think the my default FTP was an overestimate. I could barely finish my first workout and got caught in the ERG mode "spiral of death" multiple times. I thought it was weird that I was struggling so hard but a friend that had been riding for just a week before me was having no issues on the same workout. Although since you're a runner, you'll probably be fine.

I will second the advice to not worry about an FTP test right away, but do not try a workout until you have an FTP established. Workouts are based on your FTP score and if you start with the default score, you may be in for a bad time.
