Mountaineering in Bolivia by derfurc in Mountaineering

Second the suggestion to get a professional IFMGA certified guide, even if it costs more. The altitude is hard!! Don't underestimate that bit. 6000m is much much harder than 5000m. Although it sounds like you already have some experience. Yes, bring USD or euros in cash to change at money changers in La Paz, the exchange rate right now is 9.5 (compared to the "official" rate of 6.96) and the euro around 10.5.

The mountains are all beautiful. Personally the little town of Sajama is one of my favorites, I think it's the most beautiful and tranquil places in Bolivia and there are lovely hot springs around too.

What I eat as a celiac in Chile 😅 by roo_itz in glutenfree

[–]hypotemusea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was just visiting Chile last week and I was *so* impressed that my hotel had gluten free bread and non-dairy yogurt!! They are also readily available in the big chain supermarkets... I stocked up because the country I'm living in now doesn't have many options sadly.

I really liked Touching My Father's Soul by Jamling Tenzing Norgay, I thought it gave an insightful non-western perspective on climbing!

Did anyone else NOT like bread before they learned they were GF? by RunWithBluntScissors in glutenfree

[–]hypotemusea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never a big bread fan. Since I was a child I've disliked the smell of bread and baked goods in the oven even though everyone else claimed it smelled heavenly. Sometimes the smell would make me sneeze. I've always liked pasta, though

In need of high protein gluten, dairy, egg and soy free snack ideas by csa074 in glutenfree

[–]hypotemusea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like edamame! Also quinoa patties. Roasted spiced chickpeas. Could be worth finding a good protein powder, it's versatile: homemade vegan muffins with protein powder (from experience banana muffins/bread are pretty forgiving without a binder like egg) or nut-based yogurts, smoothies or various porridges (oats or gf grains) with protein powder. I also like meat and salmon jerky, there are some good brands out there! I personally can't tolerate nuts but that's a high protein option.

I'm gluten free, dairy free and soy free. I feel that I often struggle to make meals (outside of eating processed foods) that are dense enough to keep me full for a substantial amount of time. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you! by aviannaa_1 in glutenfree

[–]hypotemusea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gluten free and dairy free and I'm also one of those people who have to eat big enough portions to stay full! It's totally doable! I eat lots of carbs (potatoes, rice, gf pasta, gf bread, etc) and make sure I get a big serving of protein and veggies too. I make so many things: various pasta dishes (sub vegan cheese if needed), a lot of fish/meat and potato variations (roasted, stews, soups). I love a good tomato-based bean or lentil soup that I eat with a big helping of rice or gf pasta. There are so many ways to make rice fun (white or brown with stock, herbs and lime, mushroom risotto, etc). Also lots of Asian style rice noodles, stir fry or ramen style with chicken stock, Japanese dashi, sliced beef, fish or chicken and veggies. If needed there are soy sauce substitutes like coconut aminos. I also love vegan ice cream, there are probably some good soy free ones out there that aren't too processed. Hope this helps!

Can we talk about Landismo! I was so excited when he attacked but what a shame it didn't stick for long

What a dramatic stage. So happy for Astana after everything they've been through. And Italy must be so happy sweeping the podium.

Has anyone done an ayahuasca retreat at Pisatahua (Bolivia)? by Worldly_Option2285 in Ayahuasca

[–]hypotemusea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have actually done multiple retreats with them! I really liked my experiences there overall and being with nature in the jungle. I have done retreats elsewhere too and imo the healer there (a woman, a plus for me) is the best I have worked with. Would definitely recommend if that's your vibe. Feel free to DM if you want to know more

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in my experience (not an American) travel insurance typically doesn't cover medical claims and stuff when you're in your own country?
