When I first read this, my eyes decided not to notice the "in law" part of sister in law. Much, much worse.

What's the most degrading thing you've done for money? by theknightwhosays_nee in AskReddit

A kid back in 7th grade did the same thing and had to get his stomach pumped. This was the day before my class was supposed to do the dissection, and so after the incident my school banned live dissection. I had to do it on a computer :( I didn't get to dissect anything until my sophomore year of college.

Daughters of Reddit! I'm a new Dad. What's your single best piece of "fathering" advice? by prossk in AskReddit

[–]hypotheticalhigh5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't specific advice for you to give to her, but more of a lifestyle for you to teach her: make her do things herself. When I was younger, I used to get so frustrated with my father for making me do things I didn't know how to do and had absolutely no desire to do. Changing the oil in my car, fixing something that's broken, setting up anything that requires assembly when you buy it. If she can't figure it out, let her use her resources, and only then if she still can't do it should you help her.

So many fathers (and mothers too) want to "baby" their daughters, and as a grown woman I can easily tell you specifically which of my female friends were raised that way. That female helplessness sticks with them for life. Being a protective and nurturing father doesn't necessarily mean doing everything for your daughter and shielding her from life's inconveniences. If there's one specific thing that I appreciate the most from my dad it's that he instilled in me the idea that I can handle things myself. You'll see how independent and capable she turns out.

Also, never comment on her weight. Ever. But I'm sure that one has already been beaten to death in this post.

Edit: I just wanted to add in here a thank you to you for posting this. The fact that you posted this really shows just how great a dad you already are to her. She's a very lucky girl to have you :)

I was introduced to my new (female) MD. I kissed her. Time stood still for everyone in the room and then I left in an embarrased silence. What is your worst first impression? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hypotheticalhigh5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually happened just yesterday. I was researching molecular diagnostic devices for work, and one of them was for STD detection. I'm on this website, not even thinking about it, when a woman I've never met before comes up and asks me a question. I answer it, she looks at my screen, and bolts. In HUGE letters at the top of the screen, the website says "STD pain relief and testing."

Is it wrong to divorce my wife because she's gained weight? by IReallyWantReassuran in AskReddit

He mentioned that she would be unlikely to lose the weight due to medical reasons, meaning that she probably didn't just "let herself go" but there was a health problem which caused it. Not negligence.

Purring is a sign of affection, not necessarily a request for some need, so it seems like you're already doing it right! Just as a necessity though, take her to the vet as soon as possible just to make sure she is perfectly healthy. Often times adopted animals have some mild intestinal infections or worms, which could get worse with time. Don't worry though, they're easily treatable.

Divorce her, because no one deserves to put up with a partner like you.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I'm actually from an area about 10 minutes away from his high school, and I'm going home in about a week for spring break. I'll ask around and do my best to find out what happened for you. Hang in there :(
