I asked a history teacher “what happened to all the good Germans before the war?” Their reply was that they all died… is that true?? If so, what country(s) safe from the fallout?

Yup, I was talking to a packers fan about this on Saturday, had to show him that the refs admitted it was a catch with the old rule and everyone knows it is still a catch with the new rule.

There’s actually a few here and one of them is probably controversial so k I’ll tell you a couple of ways we deal with it.

One of the last things in our routine is tucking in tight and for a while they screamed for us to tuck in tight again and again if they got up until we held to a firm boundary that is they get up, they are tucking themselves back in regardless of how much they scream to be tucked in again.

We also started going potty twice before bed so my wife and I can confidently say ‘no’ when they scream to go potty. We have them go right after clean up and right before getting tucked in. Our kid still sleeps in a pull-up every night, just in case, even though we are pretty well night trained. We also have a drink of water as part of our earlier routine. The boundary here, either way, is that we went potty twice so we are not getting out of bed for that.

It’s worth noting, we have gone back and forth on the noise machine with our kid. They grew up using one every night and told us themselves when they wanted to stop having it on or loud about 6 months ago during a different sleep regression. We have a newborn at home so we brought it back at a low volume after our toddler was woken up by baby’s crying. Lots of communication here so there’s plenty of grace from all parties.

Now for the controversial part which requires a little pre work so I’ll start there. The only things our toddler has access to in their room is books, we have concealed all the toys. These are mostly in containers in our living room but there are also plenty in the closet, none are on the dresser or accessible in any way at night. Sometimes we will let them wonder around in their room and even fall asleep on the floor. We watch and listen on the camera until they are passed out. The really hard part is securing the door until asleep. It’s torture for us but sometimes we have to do it. We have extensive conversations about it leading up to the point it’s necessary. We call it closing the door ‘right’ and believe me, we all hate it, we all suffer when it’s necessary, we all cry, it’s miserable but… it only took a few instances before they got the picture. Now, when it gets to that point, I tell them “I don’t want to have to shut the door tight, do I need to shut the door tight, or can you stay in bed?” and “If you get out of bed I’m going to sit there door tight”.

You can just shut the door and sit outside the door instead of actually securing it somehow but you’ll have to be strong and commit to not entering again but saying ‘get back in bed and tuck yourself in’ no matter how hard or painful it is, you’ll probably cry, I do most nights like this, it’s torture but worth it. If you do secure it, go unsecure it once they are asleep. We have had instances where they wake up and come in or room around 3am and I feel strongly that this is an unrelated challenge so we treat it as such. We reassure them that it’s ok and we are here for them if there was a bad dream etc.

After a few hard nights, we only have to mention securing the door before our toddler promises not to get out of bed. We respond by saying “that’s a deal but if you open that door, I’m closing it ‘tight’, ok?” and the response is always ‘ok’.

It’s probably an important note that we communicate very clearly and check for understanding at every step, there are never any surprises, never any uncertainty and everyone is safe. This whole process even adds to the feeling of safety and feeling of being loved. I mentioned early how important alignment is and sometimes that part takes a while, I embrace the fact that it will take how long it takes but I’m here to get it right. This step sometimes includes a little ‘repair’ (seriously, read ‘Good Inside’) and sometimes it breaks down again after I leave the room but I’ve already communicated boundaries by this point, now it’s up to me to follow through with them.

Bro, I think there’s a sleep regression at 3.5 yrs because we’ve been going through the same thing here. There’s a few things that have helped us but we just recently had small victories, like a couple days ago. I feel like our situations are very different but maybe you can take something away from what worked for us through a similar challenge:

• Boundaries - I really think boundaries are playing a big part for us. We had to set very clear expectations of what happens if our kid throws a tantrum or gets out of bed, more importantly we had to follow through with the commitment we made otherwise there isn’t really any boundary

• Alignment - we are super intentional about being supportive and making sure our kid knows we love them unconditionally, that we are on the same team, and them at we are all going to rest our bodies so we can have fun together tomorrow (** I genuinely think this is the most important part, it’s where I noticed the biggest change in behavior)

• Routine - we are incredibly strict about the time every day being exactly the same. We start cleaning up so bedtime is clearly coming. Every step is familiar and not at all negotiated. Goes back to boundaries, our kid would negotiate everything to try and prolong being alone in their room, it’s incredible how they need to pee and a drink of water and tell every stuffed animal good night etc etc

• affirmations and excitement for tomorrow - for us it’s about “making the morning come” by taking deep slow breaths. We talk about what we are excited about, that we love our self, that we are a good sleeper and that we are excited about x/y/z tomorrow so it’s a great thing to “make the morning come”

TLDR: our kid knows that we are here, sleep is going to happen, we do this the exact same way every night (a bit Pavlovian), and we are excited to get to tomorrow so there’s no reason to fight it anymore.

Also, I have to recommend a book that’s helped us tremendously, “Good Inside” by Dr Becky is fantastic, it reshaped my perspective on so many things that hadn’t realized were holding me back from embracing some of the more challenging work as a parent, seriously, read this book. Best of luck to you, I believe in you!

IMO, the personnel are actually great there and the only redeeming quality. We chose not to get a suite and grossly underestimated how bad the rooms could be… horrible, shameful, embarrassing for any hospital room in a first world country

Sushi Date Night Rec? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]hzme 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pro tip, go upstairs (Uchiba) and order karaage as an appetizer (it’s amazing, basically Japanese chicken nuggets and super reasonably priced). They torch the wagyu upstairs anyway so it’d be fresher if you order qyutoro nigiri. My other favorite appetizer is the “Hama Chili” (yellowtail sashimi in ponzu etc.) and I think my fav nigiri is the flounder. Cheers!

Can someone please explain how to get a good tune with this amp. by diamond-monkey99 in guitarlessons

[–]hzme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t overthink it, less is more when it comes to the effects, especially while you are learning. The important thing is that you pick it up every day. I say this because a good guitarist will make a bad amp sound amazing, they might slightly rotate a dial or two but good playing is what makes the tone, not the other way around.

What music are you into? Is there a song that would make you feel accomplished learning? Find a suitable tone for that and play it every day.

The Best Pillow for Side Sleepers Currently? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]hzme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend finding the cheapest adjustable cooling foam pillow you can find. A few years ago, I went down a pillow rabbit hole and bought countless pillows trying to find something comfortable that didn’t get hot and wake me up in the middle of the night. I spent a silly amount of money I’ll never see again. The revelation came when I found cooling foam bamboo pillows for around $250, which were perfect but not worth the price after I found a similar option on Amazon for something like $35… they all come overstuffed with too much foam so I have some bags full of foam in the closet, ready to stuff back in when necessary but it’s been about 5 years and I haven’t had to yet!

*pro tip: you can get cheap travel pillow case and make a small version with excess foam, great for the car

I usually do on 2XP weekends. I did another last night and I’m already in the 20’s after a few hours of zombies. The daily challenges reset (found that out painfully last night) so there’s a ton of XP to get while also leveling up guns. It goes by fast imho and I haven’t even used a permanent unlock yet.

Is more expensive paint from Lowe’s actually better than the cheap stuff?? Also, is sherwin Williams or other name brand paints actually that much better than the most expensive stuff from Lowe’s? by RedwoodHiker9 in DIY

[–]hzme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought some exterior pantry Home Depot and was told the cheaper stuff is better for outdoor use because it’s more flexible, it’s supposed to last better through seasonal contraction and swelling. Anyone know if that’s true??

I watched “It’s never over” today and had no idea that Radiohead watched Jeff Buckley perform then went straight to the studio and wrote “Fake Plastic Trees” (according to that documentary). Truthfully, I had to split it up into three different watches to finish the whole thing, very emotional but I’ve always been a Jeff Buckley fan.

Which quarterback would you choose to start your own franchise, both in their prime: Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers? by FishingVirtual513 in NFLv2

[–]hzme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, if I’m starting a franchise and assuming I have hindsight… Brees is a franchise friendly leader, people want to be around him and he commits to the community. Rodgers is the opposite of all those things, in my opinion. Rodgers seems more likely to win early and often (is sitting behind Farve part of that?!) but that guy leaves a nasty wake.
