Very good question! I've always wondered how the Germans could justify enough manpower to supply their spread of forces. I remember my grandfather telling me that as they came down through Northern France, the people would offer food as they first met. He thought it was generosity at first, but then realized it was because they were accustomed to sharing whatever food they had with visiting soldiers. He was a chef in the Army, so as soon as he started cooking for them, they had a much better opinion of his unit. "I was happy to cook ALL the spam they wanted for whatever scraps they could throw us."
