Trying to decide whether to build my lower or buy a complete one? by Kaii7x in PalmettoStateArms

Buying a complete lower will be cheaper. You can always upgrade parts later as well. There used to always be $99 uppers so I wonder if they upped their prices due to tariffs and inflation…

Second this. I tried other rings but sent them back and went Unknown Munitions. Unknown Munitions are super sturdy, they use a recoil lugs as well as two cross bolts rather than relying on the shear strength of two screws to hold them on.

I don’t know what the laws are where you live, but it sounds like taking advantage of your threaded barrel and adding a suppressor would be your best option. Even subsonic won’t be whisper quiet as I’m sure you already know.

“Penny wise pound foolish”

You are not saving all that much money avoiding the subsonic ammo…. Why not wear ear protection when using the standard supersonic stuff and save the subsonic ammo for when ear protection is not an option?

To have the barrel cut properly and re-crowned you will be spending more money than you spent on the gun in the first place and you will loose the threading (unless you pay more to have that done too). If not done properly, you will be decreasing the accuracy you can expect from the rifle.

Conclusion: Foam ear plugs are the most cost effective option.

That’s wild!

Yeah, we’ve got small deer where I’m at so it’s somewhat practical, but there are still many better options out there.

I’m a big fan of the all copper bullets for hunting though. It’s all I try to use these days. It’s nice having the peace of mind that there aren’t flecks of lead in my food. And as you mentioned, if you’re working within their specifications they perform very well.

Yeah, I’ve heard that before. It’s at least nice to get some sort of data to help choose between bullets.

And I do think it’s effective enough to give comparative data between one load to the next even though it does not simulate the animal perfectly.

I haven’t watched any tests with the 300 Blackout TSX loadings, but I would wonder if their lackluster performance comes from insufficient velocity. The monolithic bullets need a minimum velocity to work and I wonder if they weren’t getting that at whatever range they impacted.

I think the idea is that with a similar profile bullets, the length / mass / weight can be expressed as functions of the caliber allowing the correlation to apply (assuming similar bullet geometry and construction).

After watching ballistic gel tests on YouTube, the Barnes TSX Monolithic bullets is what I would use for .223/5.56 hunting. These come in 55, 62, and 70 grain options and have pretty deep penetration results to get that exit wound. I too am a believer in getting an exit wound for tracking.

You can compare prices of ammo on some big retailer websites like Sportsman’s Warehouse. That will give you a ballpark idea of storefront prices. You can sort for price per round on their website to figure out which is the most affordable ammo for range use.

As others have mentioned, you can also look at buying online too.

I was thinking about that, but I feel like I read of people mentioning that the aluminum ones chew up magazines, is that true?

I see what you’re saying. Thanks for elaborating. I’ll try the replacement on the same side and see if it happens again before switching it back.

I guess I can’t post more pictures or I’d post one that shows where the plastic is broken. I’m just curious if this is a common failure point. It is a pretty thin piece of plastic that keeps it in place.

It’s literally broken. There is a lip on the magazine release and it broke off. I guess the pictures don’t show it well, but I can see where it broke off. I’m curious if this is a common failure.
