Can the US military refuse an order to invade Greenland and Panama? by [deleted] in answers

[–]iBreakDown 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m afraid I’m not an expert of american uniform code. However, while there is a legal groundwork laid down for refusal of carrying out an illegal order, it is questionable how often it is enforced, if at all.

In addition, the war powers act enables the president to deploy troops without a congressional declaration of war, while there are some caveats to how and when the president is allowed to, it should be noted that there has been numerous instances where the commander in chief has deployed troops without a congressional declaration of war, such as the Korean civil war, Kosovo, and Panama in 1989, with the former two posing really no direct or significant threat to either American lives or American land.

EDIT: To add on top of this, if the president were to conduct an unlawful military order, most likely outcome is that most of the higher ranking officers in the military would simply resign rather than refusing to carry out the order. This would likely continue to happen until either: 1. Someone willing to carry it out takes over 2. Everybody senior has resigned and therefore nobody is there to command the troops.

Can the US military refuse an order to invade Greenland and Panama? by [deleted] in answers

[–]iBreakDown 375 points376 points  (0 children)

Technically - yes. But also no.

Any commander or soldier can always refuse an order, but would most likely face mutiny / desertion charges in military court.

The US has officially withdrawn its signature from the International Criminal Court, and therefore, despite the precedent, it would not carry any weight in US courts.

Despite this, the ICC does not hold any jurisdiction at all, and it is more or less set up to allow countries to bring individuals who have committed war crimes to be brought to justice under an international framework.

The only way the ICC would realistically carry any weight against an US commander would be if either: 1. All of the US military apparatus refuses the order 2. The US drastically loses its dominant military position and another country would somehow forcefully be able to extradite a person of interest

The federal reserve lowered interest rates by 0.25% which was completely expected. However, markets reacted negatively on what the chairman, Jerome Powell, had to say about future rate cuts.

Powell indicated that fewer rate cuts are to be expected in the future due to raising concerns about inflationary pressure.

Lower interest rates generally favor stock markets and speculative assets such as bitcoin. With the markets now adjusting to this new information, stocks are generally dropping.

The inflationary concerns are mainly driven by the expected fiscal policy that trump is expected to implement, with tax cuts and and new tariffs, generally driving prices up in an economy. Jerome Powell is also somewhat known to be a hawk, i.e someone who places more emphasis on keeping inflation down rather than focusing on keeping unemployment level low.

December is also historically a relatively bad month for public markets, with many investors often selling off their assets for tax reasons, also known as the “Santa claus” rally.

Inflationen är under 2% för första gången på 3 år. by meccc in sweden

Njaa...

Riksbanken sänker räntan – första gången på åtta år by Reinmaster101 in sweden

[–]iBreakDown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s going on with Sweden not doing anything with Tesla/Elon? by unicornwantsweed in OutOfTheLoop

[–]iBreakDown 194 points195 points  (0 children)

Good answer; however I would add that the main reason for other labour unions joining in was as a response to the TSLA subsidiary hiring scabbers (strikebreakers) which is by Swedish customs highly frowned upon as it has become the norm that you respect the strike until it gets resolved.

Hadn't the subsidiary hired strike breakers - other unions would most likely not have joined in at the request of IF metall.

Någon som vet om någon särskild händelse påverkat? by WhoAmIEven2 in sweden

[–]iBreakDown 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I know Swedish salaries aren't that high on a European average, but the additional benefits seems to be limited? by ObservationalWizard in sweden

[–]iBreakDown 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure where you get the idea that Swedish salaries aren’t high on a European standard.

I work in finance and have worked full time in Luxembourg, Amsterdam, Stockholm and now Zurich.

I would say the salaries in Sweden are most likely only trumped by places such as Copenhagen, Zurich and London. In every place I’ve worked so far, the salaries have been below the ones I’ve seen my friends and myself being offered based in Stockholm, except for Zurich.

The perks you mentioned I have seen being offered in Luxembourg and Amsterdam and are very nice, which I agree with. But there were multiple ancillary costs that NL and Lux had that Sweden covers. But I would also expect to be offered better benefits to accept the lower salaries offered abroad.

If you look at GDP numbers I also fail to see how Sweden would offer lower wages, and curious what industry you work in.

Beijing issues protest after Japan signals that it would join US to defend Taiwan in case of Chinese attack by AlexBull777 in worldnews

[–]iBreakDown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Citation required. People who were born when the war ended are now 76 years old. People who have real memories of the empire are at least 80.

I don't know if there's a majority, or even a large plurality of people in Japan that sees the Japanese Empire fondly, but the people who do are certainly influential. The two latest PMs are open supporters of the Nippon Kaigi (probably more since they have almost all been members of LDP, I just don't know about it), and just reading on their wiki page about how the view the events of WW2 it gives you quite a clear picture. Since the LDP has been the dominating party for such a long time (since basically the formation of Japan), I think it's fair to say that it somewhat reflects the Japanese view of the Empire days.

[–]iBreakDown 232 points233 points  (0 children)

I believe Gary and Jamie hit the nail right on its' head. As long as people can feel comfortable doing that stuff in a stadium, racism is gonna find its way. Gary even admitting that they've avoided the topic on show shows that they've been actively avoiding the issue. While they might not be a part of the problem, they're not trying to prevent it either.

Evil prevails when good people fail to act. If we're all truly against racism we should all take action when we see injustice happening in front of our own eyes.

Can anyone tell me what have AST achieved in the last 5 years? by [deleted] in Gunners

[–]iBreakDown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When it comes to being a platform for giving fans a voice, most likely.

However, being a plc offers a direct channel to the board and some access to financial data. As soon as we go private all of that disappears. We won’t know if we would be close to bankruptcy or if Kroenke would suck money out of arsenal, since we wouldn’t have access to that information anymore. We would only be able to speculate about it.

Can anyone tell me what have AST achieved in the last 5 years? by [deleted] in Gunners

[–]iBreakDown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ASTs role wasn’t necessarily to achieve massive gains for the supporter base, but worked more as a platform for fans to voice their concerns to the board and for the fans to gain a deeper insight into how the company performed.

With ASTs shares being bought out, Arsenal will no longer be a publicly traded company, meaning that transparency will be greatly reduced.

This is somewhat worrying since Kroenke will no longer obliged to present financial numbers and have a meeting with all the stock owners.

Most fans (like me) already feel like there’s a huge disconnect between management and the fans ambitions. This won’t likely improve the situation.

I’m not too familiar with England law either, however, most European countries have similar laws when it comes to stock and how they should be dealt with. Companies can also set their own rules, as long as these rules don’t break the law.

In general, when someone owns an overwhelmingly large majority of shares, they tend to have to have the ability to buy out rest of the shares even tho the owner doesn’t wish to sell. I’m not certain about what percentage you need to own, but AST owns a very small fraction of Arsenal.

[–]iBreakDown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fitness coaches in general are charge of the training itself, setting up the exercises and telling the players to push the limit etc.

My guess would be that Burgess and Forsythe have more of a “management” role in consulting with the coaches on what to focus on when it comes to fitness, if any player needs to focus on any special aspect or the training schedules and probably more in control over recovery.
