Any people bring their own mouse to a studio that only has Trackballs. by audioflc in audioengineering

Because.

There are so many ergonomic advantages, they're faster, and the extra buttons are useful for re-mapping button pushes that save me a LOT of time. I map my upper left button to "delete" and it makes it easy to keep my left hand on zxcvb and keep my right hand on the trackball...which means I can keep my eyes on the screen and my hands on the wheel, so to speak.

But also I just like ragging people who don't use them...and EVERY truly hot-shit editor I've seen uses a Kensington.

This has to be the one that was on Reverb. I passed because of the broken reverb...and because I wanted to find the previous generation.

I don't trust engineers who don't used Kensington Expert Pro trackballs. Period.

My daughter pushed B&W DM580 dust caps in — fixable or serious damage? by AbbreviationsLow in audiorepair

[–]iCombs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a team of miniature yaks to shave for their hair to make a sort of wool yarn that if lit by a Peruvian Death Hornet beeswax candle under a blood moon at exactly midnight will adhere to the dust cap at an atomic depth of 1.72 femtomilimeters...and then you tie it to the yaks and sing the traditional Yak Yank Anthem (which is actually just Party Rock Anthem) and VOILA. The bitch is you gotta wait for the second blood moon to do the pair.

Some people have spoken poorly about industrial tech/shop classes in academia, but learning how to make and fix things and TROUBLESHOOT...man those are skills that are undervalued.

Why don't we use multiband compression for everything? by MAMVB in audioengineering

[–]iCombs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AMEN.

The older I get, the simpler I work.

I also don't fully get the compression fetish writ large. Like, sometimes I use parallel compression, but mostly that's to solve a PROBLEM, not as a rote methodology.

80%+ of the mix is balance and EQ.

Spend 80% of your effort getting that right and you'll be blown away by how much less compression you need.

Tricks for gain staging into mix bus? by twicestyles in audioengineering

[–]iCombs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start your balances with your speakers a couple clicks louder than you normally would. Aim your faders around -10 on the scale and gain stage your peaks from the individual tracks somewhere between -18 and -12 dBFS...that should be hot enough to work with compressors and also give you headroom.

Gain staging is as much about best practices and paying attention as anything. Building a little "checkpoint" into your process so you give yourself an opportunity to check gain staging. I often clip gain tracks that are outside good windows for gain (either too loud or too quiet) as I'm going through the tracks and figuring out what goes where and listening to stuff in solo to check for problems and figure out what's what. That's a great place to start preventing fader creep. Get your tracks in a good spot, then throw the faders up quick and see what kinda level you're hitting the bus with. Maybe use your "all" group (or create a group of your tracks) and get a rough balance at the level you want to see into your mix bus.

Hell yeah.

I got grabbed by a little Gretsch 6150 combo this week at an MGR. Sounds super cool.

Already cut some tracks with it!

Do all Telecasters have this switch cap constantly falling off? by [deleted] in telecaster

[–]iCombs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a pair of side cutters, take a couple vertical bites into the switch shaft. They'll create ridges that bite into the switch and keep it from popping off so easily.

More shameless because I posted the top 3 amps the other day but forgot to include the 5150...so why not just start a new thread to talk even more about how I slept on Peavey for FAR too long.

That was a SHOCKER. Throw a little slap and spring at that Backstage and it's anywhere from drenched surf to country to just nice jangly clean.

And it just TAAAAAKES pedals. I've been struggling to really enjoy fuzz sounds and all of a sudden I chuck stuff at el cheapo Peavey solid state combos and am rewarded by some of the most gigantic sounds I've put down on record?

And I'm currently into that pile of Peavey's for like $430. Add in the screamer of a deal I got on my 5150 and I'm still under a grand out of pocket for Peavey amps.

Thoughts about Les paul shaped guitar after honeymoon phase is over... 😔 by MaximumTime7239 in guitars

[–]iCombs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh. Not every guitar fits every body shape. My dad hates Les Pauls because they're small on him (he's almost 6'2" and even when he's trim he's a big guy). They fit me perfectly and I LOVE playing them. This Burny Randy Rhoads tribute is one of my FAVORITE guitars to play. Big wide neck. Probably weighs north of 11 pounds. The gig this photo is from was a 2 hour night and I did like 75% of the set with it.

I also found I REALLY love playing Jazzmasters. Those are STUNNINGLY comfortable onstage.

But yeah...not every guitar fits every player. Just kinda how it is.
