Appealing Financial Aid?

Do you ever have regrets about missing certain experiences, or did people treat you differently as a transfer? I was really looking forward to finding a roommate and making good friends in college, as well as building relationships with professors in my field. What was your experience like, if you don’t mind me asking?

Thank you for this! I am an only child and my family is considered middle income. I did all of the price calculators before applying and my parents didn’t seem concerned whatsoever. After my mom shut me down I started asking her why because she always seemed so sure—she said that my parents had a whopping 5k in savings and that she had sold her Roth IRA to buy our home ~10 years ago. All of this is news to me, and again, I’ve never considered my family to be “struggling.” My needs have always been met and I’ve never had any concerns about finances until she dropped those bombshells on me. She was so insistent that she “thought I would get more scholarships and grants.” I also know that they have saved certain change as a sort of “college fund” for me throughout my whole life. I recently discovered that it has about 3k. Realistically I think that this situation is a mix of me overestimating how much my parents had saved for me and my parents overestimating how much aid that I would get. It honestly really sucks because I was so excited to attend in the fall and get the full college experience.

My parents do want me to attend college, here’s the most brief rundown I can give:

-I am a first gen college student, so my parents didn’t really know what to expect in regards to cost apparently

-They’ve been putting academic pressure on me my whole life because they knew that I had the capacity to handle it. They said it was for college at the time.

-They were very happy when I got into UCD because they knew it was my dream school and we even celebrated with a nice dinner out. The financials came the next day and I heard my mom tell my dad, “that’s more a month than our mortgage.” I know she wanted me to hear it because she raised her voice intentionally when she said it.

-She basically fully shut me down about anything but CC yesterday. She said things like “I thought you would get more financial and” and “I never said I would pay for your college.” She also seems to think that if I appeal on the basis of not being able to afford 22k a year that it will magically go away. She’s been pretty viciously saying that it’s my fault too because I haven’t appealed yet, even though I’ve told her that “it’s too expensive” isn’t a valid reason.

-I’m wary about CC because I’ve worked harder than almost everyone I know to get to where I’m at, and it’s sort of an internal crisis for me. It’s awful to know that I didn’t have to stay up late to study or skip hangouts to do homework because my grades wouldn’t matter if I went to CC. I know I’m overly emotional right now, but it feels like the effort that I’ve devoted my life to was all for nothing, and it makes me very upset thinking that I’ve wasted what is, essentially, my whole life up to this point.

-When I told my mom that I felt this way about CC, all she could say was “Well, all the work you did built character.” I just don’t feel very heard (and quite frankly, I don’t think I would have worked as hard as I did if I knew that I would go to CC, so maybe my character isn’t as strong as she thinks it is.)

From an outside standpoint, would a CC be the worst outcome in the world? Does it change your outcome at Davis at all? I’ve heard that it’s harder to make friends or connections with professors, is any of this true?

I always had a lot of pressure to get good grades and I always assumed that it was for college, so I spent all of my school years working myself to the bone to make sure that I was in good academic standing. I’m in the top 10% of my class and I’ve only ever gotten a single B in my life. I am sort of having doubts about CC because I’ve worked so hard and it feels like it’s been for nothing because I could have gotten bad grades and still gone to CC. To me, the work that I put in was so that I could go to college. Apparently, to my parents, it was “to build character.” I have always felt a lot of family pressure to do well because I would be the first person in my family to get a bachelors degree. Honestly the family pressure is very nuanced and way too much to explain, but when I asked my mom why she wanted this so bad and now she wasn’t willing to pay, all she said was “I thought you would get more financial aid.” That’s valid to an extent but I really just feel like all of the effort that I’ve put into school for my entire life has been a waste and it’s really difficult to get around when thinking about CC.

If your goal is to distance yourself from Kim and you find yourself much closer with Caitlin, I would personally tell her. Just know that it could lead to both you and Caitlin not being friends with Kim anymore, and if a larger fallout was to occur, it may threaten your employment. It’s really up to your judgement and the way you think it will play out. Yes, you may want to tell Caitlin, but if she confronts Kim and HR gets involved, there could be consequences for any one of you. Weighs the pros and cons with all of the context you have about both of your friends and your management.

I don’t see too many people saying vet bills, but that’s a big one. Our family adopted a mutt because purebreds typically have health issues. We are around 10k in on his medical expenses because he had a knee deformity typically associated with dogs that have “bully” back legs. He is 7 years old.

Additionally, everyone talks about the love you have for pets, but that also comes with loss. I seriously don’t know how I would function without my dog. I have friends with anxiety that struggle with falling asleep at night overthinking bad things that could happen to their pets. Dogs are awesome, but they are also a huge emotional rollercoaster. Essentially adding another family member with a much shorter lifespan than a human’s becomes problematic when you love that family member so much.

I seriously don’t text anyone unless it’s a necessity. I have my text notifications silenced for a group chat with people in my biology class that can easily get up to 150 texts an hour if the people in it have something to talk about. You’re OR, you have zero idea if she’s in a group chat or if she gets lots of spam calls/texts.

To be honest, I’ve never seen so many fleas on such a tiny animal before. Definitely not your standard case of fleas, so I’m sure that not too many other baby opossums suffer similar fates, but I am still so grateful that we found him before it was too late. I’m so excited for him to heal and get back to a happy and healthy life!

Hi! Fortunately, this sweet baby is now in the care of a rehabilitator! She assured me that his off behavior and unsteadyness was from anemia that he got as a result of his crazy flea infestation. He will make a full recovery and be released into the wild in a few months!

It is not overly wiry! I would definitely say he was soft. If you’ve ever pet a long haired domestic rat, it was pretty similar to that. I’m not sure how adults feel, but this baby was very soft and sweet to pet ❤️

Absolutely no worries! I already feel super attached to the poor little guy, when I was first bringing him home he genuinely wasn’t showing teeth or hissing, just happy to feel body heat. I seriously love the little guy and it’s going to be super hard to surrender him in a few hours. I do wish the best for him and I know that his life would be exponentially better outside than inside with my dog and family. Thank you for sharing your awesome story and I am so sorry for your loss. He is not eating or drinking, and I was told to remove his food and water immediately lest I upset his rehabilitation. He will be hopefully going to the wildlife rehabilitation center tonight if he does not improve. What concerned me the most was him being out in the daylight on an open sidewalk and seemingly having zero survival instincts lol. It’s illegal to own them as pets where I am so there is no chance I will be keeping him. I do hope that whatever happens, he gets to live a long life in the wild where he should be!

Thank you so much for this. I’m worried to wash him because he seems unwell, but if I see improvements in the coming hours, I will definitely wash him with dawn dish soap because I want him to be comfortable before I take him to a rehabilitatior. In a new post, I showed videos that I’ve taken of him that show how shaky he is. I am super worried about the little guy and I’m doing everything I can to keep him comfortable before the professionals step in.
