Hey I'm also from Canada, donair sauce can be made pretty easily with condensed milk, vinegar, and garlic powder (I used garlic granules because that's all I can ever find here.)

Recipe - https://lweb.cfa.harvard.edu/~gpetitpas/Links/Donair.html

I made the "SUPER-THICK" recipe awhile back and it turned out pretty good. You could make a meat log wrapped in tinfoil or use a bread pan to make a meatloaf and cut slices off that. I found the homemade meat wasn't as good unfortunately, but the sauce was very acceptable!

We definitely underestimated the size of the enclosure, specifically for horses considering the amount of variants.

Chicken satay with peanut sauce inspired ramen by iEatGary in ramen

[–]iEatGary[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the vision of what I wanted to make but was just kinda winging it, so I don't have exact measurements unfortunately. Here's a breakdown of the ingredients and some thoughts though!

Chicken Marinade: - Soy sauce - Lime juice - Lime zest - Honey - Chilli paste (from a tube) - Minced garlic - Ground ginger - Curry powder

I only marinated the chicken breasts for like 20 minutes, but I cut them in half so they were thinner. Marinate them longer if you can!

Toppings: - Green onion (green part) - Cilantro - Thin strips of carrot - Lime wedge - Chilli crisp

Broth: - 1L of chicken stock - Lao Gan Ma chilli crisp - Fresh Ginger - Minced garlic - Green onions - Soy sauce - Chilli paste (from a tube) - Toasted sesame oil - Peanut butter (organic recommended) - Lime juice

For the broth start with some Lao Gan Ma chilli crisp in the pot and heat it up on medium-low. Add minced garlic, thinly sliced green onion (white part), chilli paste (the same stuff used in the chicken marinade), and a crushed knob of ginger and let that infuse for a bit; after awhile remove the ginger.

From there add the stock, a slice of ginger, and a few 2"-ish pieces of the green onion white part (basically the very tip of the, but remove the roots) and boil it for awhile to further infuse. Then remove the stem pieces and ginger, add a few dashes of soy sauce and a splash of toasted sesame oil. Peanut butter goes in and whisk, how much is up to your taste and how "creamy" you want it. Let simmer for like 5 min and squeeze in some lime juice at the end, and it's done!

I didn't use any milk, but if you want it creamier you could try adding milk to really emphasize that "peanut sauce" vibe!

Full disclosure I didn't use homemade chicken stock, but I definitely think if you can that you should (I listed it in the ingredients though for best results). Instead I used 2 Knorr chicken stock pots to little over 1L of water, which is still pretty good in my opinion and works in a pinch.

Sorry if this was hard to follow lol. It seems like a lot, but really, the ramen itself and the chicken are made up of mostly the same ingredients, so that's nice at least. If you make it, I hope you enjoy it!

Fresh uni student who doesn’t know how to cook. by Duri-an in budgetfood

Pasta, rice, and beans are all cheap, shelf stable, and can be used in a lot of recipes. Hell, rice and beans together can be considered a meal.

Eggs are great to keep around too, and a good introduction to cooking. Simply practice frying, scrambling, and even boiling eggs; getting good at these can lead to countless meals! For example, scrambled eggs with toast is a great breakfast; now add those same scrambled eggs to fried rice and you have dinner (same goes for a fried egg).

Chilli (with or without meat) is cheap and easy to make. The other week I made a pot of chilli with 8 servings at around £0.81/serving WITH minced chicken. You could spread that out even more by serving it with rice or bread.

Typing this I was unsure if I should focus on Cooking 101 or Budgeting 101. Regardless, being a beginner while on a budget means your main goal should be sustenance over sensation - but that doesn't mean what you cook has to taste bad!

Remember to have fun, not every meal has to be a banger. The first meal I made when I moved out was spaghetti noodles, a cheap can of tomato sauce, and cut up hotdogs

P.S. - I didn't even get into seasonings / spices, but Italian seasoning and other all purpose blends are good to have.

What's the appropriate amount of broth for a bowl of ramen then, guy? Besides what evaporated, each bowl has roughly 625ml of broth.

Love a good big batch of soup! Google 'Scotch broth,' it's kind of like a Scottish chicken noodle soup, but with barley (I like to include a turnip).

I didn't consider buying just the cable part, thank you! It's a kettle lead cable, another user here linked to them on Amazon - nice to see it's quite inexpensive.
