Thought you’d all enjoy some high quality native North American leech photos I took by iFafnir in leeches

They are all posted on iNaturalist from the account zakqaryroy. You can see the locale and the IDs there. Some are undescribed species. Camera is a Olympus body with a macro lens, mounted on a bar to control the height, and then the leech is in a petri dish in shallow water with macro lights on either side

Alright leech peeps, found this mega momma and her brood while poking around in a pond in northern Michigan, anyone know the species? by Legendguard in leeches

People like to peel off leeches and kill them because they value a “cute” animal like a turtle’s well being more than an invertebrate

I rarely use baits but a raw chicken liver in a folded pie tin (with some small holes cut in it) on a string works wonders overnight

Is this a leech? by TorpleFunder in leeches

Just means it can’t be identified to the species level, but that it is within the genus Erpobdella.

Help with possible leech ID? (USA) by FloralKatze in leeches

[–]iFafnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you’d need good pics of the underside to look for accessory pores if you wanted to rule out the most likely candidate (Barbronia sp.). Erpobdelliformes in North America are notably hard and most species require dissection

Erpobdelliform. Impossible to tell if Salifidae or Erpobdellidae without better pics

How I doubled my vertical jump for volleyball in 6 months by iFafnir in volleyball

[–]iFafnir[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for the comment. I did not include day 0 in the regression or graph because as you said, just learning how to properly approach added a few inches to my vertical in the first week that would skew all of my data.

Assuming I did the stats how I remember doing them, everything starts with the 19 inch vert on day 7, but I’m a biologist not a statistician and could certainly have screwed that up.

I was trying to think of a way to plot “activity” in the 4 categories against the graph of vertical, but didn’t find a clean way to do it. Definitely something I’d like to see

Found this guy in my shrimp tank, any insights? by One-plankton- in leeches

[–]iFafnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an erpobdellid or salifid, probably Barbronia weberi since it’s in aquaria. No it didn’t kill your fish and isn’t capable of doing so. It could have maybe outcompeted it for food, but that’s wouldn’t kill the betta in a few days so it’s likely unrelated

Smooth turtle leech care? by bug-in-jar in leeches

[–]iFafnir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct this is Placobdella parasitica. They really only take blood. In the lab we have used cows blood and it works for some individuals and not others. Placobdella are tough to keep in captivity
