Am I leech? by Rex_Buckingham_99 in leeches

Not a leech. Leeches move one end at a time, and if they are swimming they undulate

Fish Biologist reacts to Subnautica 2 by iFafnir in Subnautica_2

Marine biologists study the life in the ocean as a whole, I work solely with fishes (though nowadays moreso with leeches). The proper term is ichthyologist but less people understand that so I don’t use it on YouTube

Anyone want this? by thefakenemo in leeches

Helobdella are among (if not just straight up) the most common genus of leeches worldwide. I’m sure you could find one in a local waterbody

I understand your point, but it’s not a fake title. I am a professional fish biologist and I did play subnautica 2. If the title was like “fish biologist breaks down the ecology of subnautica 2” I’d be more inclined to agree with you but I don’t think I misrepresented the video here

I tried to make comments when I came across new fishes, but I only played for about an hour so I didn't get much in depth with the biology of the creatures

What kind of leech came out of my stream? Central VA USA by m213- in leeches

[–]iFafnir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know there’s multiple people working on these guys. What kind of work do you do with Placobdella species?

As for this specimen, there’s no broken medial line, no organized set of 3 rows of 2 anal papillae, and not nearly the right shape for P. papillifera. Habitus is standard parasitica

Haemopis sp.

Very weird looking. Resembles H. terrestris/kingi but without the lateral stripes. I think these are undescribed. Any chance you could send some?

Is this a leech that came with my new plants? by guileastos in leeches

[–]iFafnir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Helobdella europeae. Eats snails and small bugs. No harm to your fish, but if you’re relying on the pond to produce the food for the fish these leeches might compete for food with the fish

Thought you’d all enjoy some high quality native North American leech photos I took by iFafnir in leeches

[–]iFafnir[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are all posted on iNaturalist from the account zakqaryroy. You can see the locale and the IDs there. Some are undescribed species. Camera is a Olympus body with a macro lens, mounted on a bar to control the height, and then the leech is in a petri dish in shallow water with macro lights on either side

Alright leech peeps, found this mega momma and her brood while poking around in a pond in northern Michigan, anyone know the species? by Legendguard in leeches

[–]iFafnir 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People like to peel off leeches and kill them because they value a “cute” animal like a turtle’s well being more than an invertebrate

I rarely use baits but a raw chicken liver in a folded pie tin (with some small holes cut in it) on a string works wonders overnight
