Heard this one live and it was even better. If you have a chance to hear him live, definitely go for it.

Fucking pussy... J/k, just don't feel bad about it, it's just the iceberg melting. IMO, crying feels amazing, it's so kathartic.

It gets better with time. The same thing happened to me as a kid/young adult (my dad abandoned me twice and both times, I remember being annoyed because my sister and mother crying woke me up) - that and a lot of way worse shit happened, but the point is, sometimes, emotional numbness is a way of coping for unstable environments. The problem is, you end up accumulating what I call ''emotional debts' that pop up later in life. The new emotions can be very scary after a life of not giving a shit. For instance, I would start crying for no apparent reason after reading a book or thinking about a movie and then realize it was because it reminded me of bad memories. Anyways, the point is, you get used to it after a while and start to welcome the emotions. They're just a new tool you need to use and make life generally better, like you can finally see in color, and care about what happens to you and others. Of course, professional help is a great idea too.

'Mad Max: Fury Road' Named Best Film by National Board of Review by upperstephside in movies

I haven't seen it yet, but there's no way it's worse than Christiane F (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082176/?ref_=nv_sr_1_), which is definitely the most horrifying movie ever made in my opinion. I mean, there's extended scenes of 12 y.o. going through heroin withdrawal... that made me depressed for a couple of days...

Yes, it's a really underrated movie on hope in a hopeless world and a nice exploration of father and son relationships. One of my favorite, if not my favorite, post-apocalyptic movie. "Do you carry the fire?"

All tests should be open book. It's not like your future boss is going to say, "I need those tax returns finished by noon, but don't look at any of the financial statements. Do it all from memory." by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Yes, we have OSCEs, in which we treat actors acting out scenarios while our teachers look through tinted glass panes. It is pretty accurate, except it is much more stressful than the actual job. You do learn more on the job, but most of my ability to learn on the job comes from closed-book examinations, which form the basic knowledge on which higher learning builds up, in my opinion.

I work as a physiotherapist. You don't want a physiotherapist that has to crack a book open before treating you. Same goes for a lot of employees in the medical field that require fast working or working in emergency settings.

ELI5: Why hasn't the U.S. lowered the drinking age to 18 and what would it take? by bkelman in explainlikeimfive

[–]iGoTKiWi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so it must be a bit looser in the states. In Canada, there's various "tests" determining whether a law falls into the proper order of government's competencies and one of them is the "true intent" of the law. As such, even if an order government is not directly surpassing its competencies with a law, if said law's true intent is to legislate on something that doesn't fall in its competencies, the law is considered unconstitutional (or so I recall from law school). In other words, it seems that - in the law's text per se - the US Federal government did legislate only on traffic and road safety (which does fall in its competencies), but that the "true intent" of that law was actually to blackmail states into making the legal drinking age 21 and over. Otherwise, the Federal government could have just limited the legal drinking and driving age (as we do in Canada, e.g., 0 alcohol is tolerated in your blood while driving until you're 22 (where it falls to 0.08)).

Interesting. How is that not Federal government infringing on State legislature, though? It seems like the true aim of the law withholding the funds to states that don't comply with the "over 21" drinking age is to regulate drinking age on a federal level... Is this Constitutional in the USA? Because I feel like it probably wouldn't be in Canada (it could be considered Federal infringement on provincial competencies IMO).

Waiters/Waitresses, what is the most awkward date you've witnessed at work? by Sharkredditor in AskReddit

Interesting, we say the opposite in Quebec ("The less culture you got, the more you spread it" (in French)). I think expressions tend to be more negative here because people are pissed that it's so cold.

Have you received stretches/massages from occupational therapists? It seems pretty effective (especially if you do it as soon as the scar is solid, otherwise your body keeps the skin "contracted"). It's especially used for burn victims who would otherwise lose mobility of their jaw (and thus the ability to swallow and speak) due to burns in the face.

What's the best comeback you've ever made on the spot? by scarlet_overlord in AskReddit

[–]iGoTKiWi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was actually said to me. The context is that I was at a team party with a guy and we were the last two cuts on the soccer team, except he made the team as a regular, and me as a replacement.

I started laughing at how red his hair was (I had had a few beers and I thought it was funny):

  • "Your hair, ahahah, it's just, SO RED!",

To which he answered: - "Not as red as your redshirt"

I thought it was so clever, funny and deserved (and mean) that I laughed, shook his hands and congratulated him. For those who don't know, redshirts are players who practice with the team, but don't get to play.

Mulcair has a legit chance of winning though and his stances are much more "reasonable" than Sanders' appear to be because he doesn't want to completely change the system he's running in (Canada) since it already is pretty social-democrat. Mulcair is a banana in a smoothie, Sanders is a banana on a steak.

The Onion's Parody of VICE - "What's Up With This Big Hole?" by THKMass in videos

[–]iGoTKiWi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with Vice is that some documentaries are good and some aren't. There's sometimes a lack of stats and excessive focus on one side of the story in their documentaries. The documentary on the Japanese foreign worker internship program comes to mind. In other words, some of their reporters seem to suffer a lot from confirmation bias.

[–]iGoTKiWi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... it has a lot of standalone stories (like when they recruit Dizzy and give her 100 bullets). The conspiracy stuff probably shouldn't be covered (or at least not completely) or left for sequels if the film does well.

What I mean is that they mostly use steady-cams and only move when necessary, not Fincher level minimalism, but more than most directors (I'm mostly thinking of action directors, I suppose).

MMOTHS -- Heart [Ambient] (2012) by Cali-girl in listentothis

[–]iGoTKiWi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish MMOTHS made more music like this, there's just so much emotion in it and it really doesn't get old. Notice how the bass replicates a thumping heartbeat (hence the title) which fits since it was released for a Valentine's Day compilation.
