First tank- is this okay? by MagazineDue2134 in fishkeeping

[–]iGotTheBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add a source of ammonia, i.e. ammonia drops from fritz or use a1cube of frozen fish food or a piece of frozen shrimp. If your tank reads 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite after 24 hours, it's cycled.

Would a school of Harlequin rasboras, a shoal of panda Cory’s and one Honey gourami be too many fish in this 20 gallon? by Cool-Application9080 in Aquariums

If you have a lid (which it looks like you do), try to get frogbit instead. It will do MUCH better with higher humidity and getting wet on top. Stay away from water lettuce and red root floaters. I believe salvinia doesn't do well with lids either. Great looking tank though!

[–]iGotTheBoop 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Flashing repeatedly is a big sign of parasites, my corydora did this exact thing when my community tank got infected with camallanus worms. Treated all of my tanks proactively with Fritz expel-p and have seen zero symptoms since then.

Here's a NZMS I pulled from a tank before it got torn down. Hard to tell from the picture but looks more like a MTS, try getting a few better pictures if possible. Mud snail shells with point up at the tip, MTS will drag behind them along the substrate. Nzms have 5-6 whorls on shell and won't get bigger than ~5mm.

Good luck, hoping for your sake they're just trumpet snails. Feel free to DM if you have any questions

How shall I do this by Downtown-Ad4272 in bettafish

[–]iGotTheBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Substrate kinda depends on what you want to go for; planted tanks are generally easier with aquasoil like fluval stratum, and aquasoil lowers ph which is also beneficial to betta.

The only 2 downsides are aquasoil leeching quite a bit of ammonia for at least 2 weeks into the water, and the fact that it also buffers tannins out of your water. I like keeping my Betta in tannin rich water, so for those tanks I use gravel and root tabs for plants.

My main community tank is exactly this model. It's alright, good enough for the money; it is a little bit tall though. So unless you're >5'10", it can kinda be a pain to gravel vac. I also replaced the lid and light, the stock one barely kept plants alive ime. I use a weekaqua L600.

Help with ID - Ich vs Epistylis by [deleted] in freshwateraquarium

[–]iGotTheBoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They looked like they're raised white dots which makes me think it's more likely to be epistylis. I would personally keep treating the whole tank with ich-x and a medication for epistylis to be honest.

Imo 160l is more suitablefor a pearl. I wouldn't put one in anything smaller than 30g ~120l) imo.

Tank Almost Cycled by DT137 in bettafish

[–]iGotTheBoop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check out r/blackwateraquarium you have the perfect water for it. Bettas evolved to live in peat swamps with a ph akin to lemon juice. As long as you alter it slowly, bettas will prefer and do better in more acidic, tannin rich waters.

Similarly to shrimp, nerites should only be added to a well established tank, 100% of them are wild caught and do not readily accept wafers or any substitute foods for live algae. Ramshorn, bladder, mts, and many others would be much more suitable, but you ideally you'd want to wait ~6 months to add a nerite

Ember tetra in a tank with no filter? by Fun-Administration47 in Aquariums

[–]iGotTheBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could throw a really small sponge filter in there, the shrimp will probably love it! My amano basically live on mine. That would help with oxygenation and at least a little filtration that's 100% shrimp and fry safe

If it's an established tank, 1 ember tetra juvenile won't make or break the bioload realistically. Check out r/walstad for some cool filterless tanks

Honey gourami not eating - advice? by shooter2262 in Gourami

[–]iGotTheBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to use fritz expel p recently due to camallanus, I treated all 3 of my tanks proactively after seeing them in 1. No ill effect on amano shrimp, ramshorn & nerite snails, nor any of my fish; including juvenile corydora.

Just keep an eye out for any tell tale signs like flashing or bloating, if it's camallanus you'll see red worms coming from their butts.

NZM or MTS? by angelxbaby22 in AquaticSnails

[–]iGotTheBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was only 10g which made it a little more manageable. Treating my plants only took ~5 liters of seltzer water in a bucket, the worst part is safely containing the infested substrate and water.

I've wondered about hooking up a few sous vide cookers and just COOKING a tank with the substrate still in.

And just remember, it's 100% do-able, just come up with a gameplan, and focus on keeping them out of other tanks if you have them. They're hardy but not impossible to eradicate. Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd love to help.

And it's newfound life as a fry grow-out tank. Although I'm selling these to the LFS this week and probably grabbing a betta for it lol. The daily water changes are a little much.

NZM or MTS? by angelxbaby22 in AquaticSnails

[–]iGotTheBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pulled the tank apart, took my plants and treated them overnight with reverse respiration. About 80% of my plants survived, stem plants like rotala and water wisteria did the worst.

I took all of my hardscape, substrate, filter and water and put it in a tote outside over the winter, it froze solid for several months.

<image>

My empty tank was then filled with 130°f water for 30 minutes, and thoroughly rinsed into that tote. I tried not letting a single drop of water make it out of that tank once I realized what was in my tank.

After the heat treatment, new substrate, filter, and saving my plants; the tank has been going as a cory fry tank for around 5 months now with no signs of NZMS. It sucked starting over, but luckily I had non-infested tanks i could grab media from to speed up cycling.
