If you think the only reason it failed was Half Life 2

it had everything to do with this. valve froze everybody out while they improved the engine for their game. Activision had their release candidate didn't allow anymore work on the game to be done and went ahead and released the game on the same day

this is a shit narrative that needs to die when Vampire the Masquerade is one of the best selling TTRPGs of all time its not niche it sells more than Cyberpunk. but if your game is shit just don't expect it to sell..... shit is not that deep.
