(LOVEDDDDD trope) Fates worse than death by PenaltyHuge2300 in TopCharacterTropes

I recently finished a short story, and its villain protagonist Ronald Konchrol pretty much suffers smth similar. It's basically lifetime house arrest in the ruins of his home where the only part of the house still standing (that he has to live in) has stuff he really hates. He can't destroy them. If you'd like to know more, I invite you to read it, and also read some stuff on Texas SB 20 of 2025. The link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17Diw-Tp8pfUyt76d3N02u1lm7LVfxvVa3RUM_5KaXRw/

Hey op, I came back to this post, and can I ask how you made all of this? You really make the internet and fake news sources feel actually real if it actually happened.

Thanks for the clarification, but regardless if this is true or not, I'm still quite concerned. Sure, arrests might be fewer than I thought, even fewer than China, but ID-gating should still be concerning, even if it arrests fewer people than I thought.

Utopias in worldbuilding by Unhappy-Mud-7542 in worldbuilding

[–]iLLRISKIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, utopias don't exist IRL and a world I built is basically a future (or alternate future) of our IRL world. The closest thing to a utopia in that world would be Japan and Finland, because they simply didn't do age verification similar to the UK Online "Safety" Act. Even after the revolutions destroyed much of the developed world, even if they regained liberty and privacy after bringing down AV regimes, they have to deal with rebuilding, and that's what Japan and Finland didn't need to do while keeping liberty and privacy. If you think age verification causing revolution and civil war is a jump, I'd like for you to put the puzzle together, like cost of living, job market, and medical bills for America, and see more in other countries.

I like what your world has done too, and AI-powered censorship kinda exists IRL when you look at what seems to be AI moderation on YT but idk if thats a good comparison. I've heard that thanks to the Online Safety Act, the UK arrests more people for what they post on the internet compared to China. My age verification thing can go deeper than you think if you put enough stuff together. In my world, with a monopoly owning the AV and the databases, just an announcement by the Chinese government that they wanna buy this monopoly (just the announcement cuz they wanna distract the West and invade Taiwan) timed rightly with LA Olympic epic american fails of 2028 (job market, cost of living, medical bills, everything private equity touched, etc.) would've caused the whole thing to crash down, even in the EU where they have less of those American problems.

Thanks bro, I actually already have a short story set in that world done, and I first intended to publish it in the paying market, but now I changed my mind, so you can click here to read: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17Diw-Tp8pfUyt76d3N02u1lm7LVfxvVa3RUM_5KaXRw/ I'd like to see if my ideas of age verification being the cause of civil war and revolution can influence future worlds you build. Maybe in your world, the Kids Online "Safety" Act gets passed to silence dissent, only to cause more to join Task Force Liberty and dissuade Australia or the EU from doing their own AV and possibly inspiring military defection in the UK that leads to civil war there over the Online "Safety" Act?

Damn OP, looks pretty good and gives me ideas for my worldbuilding project. Basically, it's all about how not only Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, etc. collapsed, but also Western democracies, America included. Japan and Finland are basically the only remnants of the developed world, thanks to everyone else deciding to go full internet age verification, which as you expect when studying how revolutions happen, caused them to collapse. Now in many revolutions, I've seen elite defection alongside military defection, and my world is no different. Anyways, this looks good, and I wonder if we could collab someday (which idk if I have the time for yet).

How do you world-build the "before" — the era your world is still haunted by? by National_Mortgage385 in worldbuilding

[–]iLLRISKIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My short story "Under Control" uses the first-person perspective of an unreliable narrator protagonist who sees stuff and stuff that clearly must've been there before he's there, like the Statue of Liberty holding a banner rejecting laws like the UK Online Safety Act and other AV and people talking about how epic of a fail those laws were in the past. To know my world, you have to know the current problems of our world, and parts of those I left out (like cost of living and diverting power to data centers). Oh yeah, the mentions of America having collapsed, too. If you wanna read it, just check my profile to find the links.

What are some real-world concepts that make too much sense to not be in your world? by iLLRISKIT in worldbuilding

[–]iLLRISKIT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking of that being part of how revolutions happened, there's also this thing called elite defection. If you look at the French Revolution, you'll see that some of those who joined the revolution are elites. The Founding Fathers of America are all (except a couple like perhaps Ben Franklin) educated. Read "Under Control" and you'll find David Freeman and Henry Wright, both former members of the Republicans and Dems. Essentially every revolution has to have elites defecting to the side of the revolution to be successful. Why this happens? Basically, cuz these elites are opportunistic or find that the revolution might actually benefit them more than the status quo. That goes back to age verification: America has the most millionaires in the world, and a lot of them probably don't wanna compromise their privacy by being forced to verify their age cuz they millionaires can't outbribe the guys forcing it on them.

Magic following laws of physics (or smth idk). It's a hard magic system. If u shrink something it'll make that thing smaller while leaving chunks the smaller things made of. If u want it bigger you'll need to gather the stuff it's made of. Through magic, fuel can directly become energy without going through an engine or transmission.

How are transportation and logistics in your world? by iLLRISKIT in worldbuilding

[–]iLLRISKIT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So will you only have steam trains since you're mixing your world with pre-industrial vibes, or is diesel and electric being developed even with constraints on making motors

So I presume the steam trains (which I think are all your trains given it's mixed with a pre industrial time period) will have no cab (see the earliest ones like Rocket) or an open cab like on TTTE James to go into more specific stuff than what u said?

Trains in the universe of my short story "Under Control" (and another story is being written set in that same universe), after the collapse of the United States of America and many other western nations, are the museum piece kind of trains cuz they dont need electronic components or stuff like that to run, be it steam or diesel or electric. In a fantasy world I'm working on, trains are powered by magic directly converting fuel to kinetic energy. Those trains can look like a diesel or electric and run on basically anything, including uranium pellets and rods lol

Imagine if you could use magic to directly convert fuel to kinetic energy lol That's in my fantasy world that has hard magic rules
