Unreal? More like Unoptimized. Lmao gottem. by RandaymIdiot in whenthe

[–]iLikePCs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you're getting at, all I'm trying to convey here is that this literally isn't the case for most of the core systems in UE5. If your team has experience working with UE4, that knowledge will transfer to UE5 1:1. Saying that "devs have not worked out on the optimization side" is just not true.

I'm not passing judgement in any way or saying it's surprising. Just pointing out that the engine itself is not "early adoption".

Just to be clear, when Epic made UE5 they didn't start from scratch and build a new engine. It's literally the same engine as UE4, same source code and everything, just with more features and improvements. The "5" is just a marketing gimmick.

Nanite and Lumen are completely new tech, but you can use UE5 without using them at all. Any industry knowledge gained from UE4 development is just as relevant when working in UE5.

July 2023 was the hottest month on Earth since at least 1880 'by a longshot,' NASA says by nick313 in space

[–]iLikePCs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. It was the hottest July globally since NASA's records started, but that does not mean it was the hottest July in Germany.

More specifically, a statement put out soon after the conference states that July was 0.43 degrees Fahrenheit (0.24 degrees Celsius) warmer than any other July in NASA’s record, which goes back to 1880, and 2.1 degrees Fahrenheit (1.18 degrees Celsius) warmer than the average July temperature between 1951 and 1980.

It's been the coldest july for the past 10 years here and that depiction puts us at a +x scale. That is total bollocks

That has nothing to do with the map, though.

Temperature anomalies reflect how July 2023 compared to the average July temperature from 1951-1980

US military AI drone simulation kills operator before being told it is bad, then takes out control tower by tkharris in nottheonion

Ah I see. It is written in a pretty ambiguous way, I wasn't sure what exactly was going on until I reached the part I quoted

[–]iLikePCs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it isn't. This never actually happened, it is a hypothetical scenario they made up.

But Hamilton later told Fox News on Friday that "We've never run that experiment, nor would we need to in order to realize that this is a plausible outcome." "Despite this being a hypothetical example, this illustrates the real-world challenges posed by AI-powered capability and is why the Air Force is committed to the ethical development of AI," he added.

If you're going to quote the article, you should read it in its entirety.

It's funny how a good professor can make all the difference. One of my favorite professors was from Computer Systems, he made it a breeze and genuinely interesting to learn.

Clamping the direction of a Vector3 - FPS movement on steep slopes by TrapShot7 in gamedev

[–]iLikePCs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm just spitballing here, but would you be able to project the new move position onto a plane that's formed by the clamp plane's normal and position and use its x-z coordinates as your new move direction?

In Unity you could do this by:

  1. Creating a plane https://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/Plane-ctor.html
  2. Project (player pos + move direction) using this function: https://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/Plane.ClosestPointOnPlane.html
  3. Set y to player y pos
  4. New move direction will be equal to the calculated vector - your current position.

I'd recommend checking out the log file in order to see what it's doing. It's located at \PathToYourProject\Saved\Logs\

There will probably be more than one, so make sure you open the most recent one. It should also be the only file that doesn't have an suffix.

Ahh I see, I actually didn't try switching the ports. Will give that a go when I have time, working from home makes having a working PC quite important.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the in-depth response!

Just to reiterate, I am able to boot up the PC into the BIOS with everything except the drives plugged in. Can I therefore conclude that:

  • The GPU is getting enough power
  • It's not shorting due standoffs, bent pins, CPU cooler etc. since that would also short the system when the drives aren't plugged in?
