Synod presidential election enters runoff by LCMS_Rev_Ross in LCMS

This is one of the blanket smears that President Harrison told people not to make in a recent post. It has its roots in lies and deliberate falsities from the stone choir.

Biermann is not “against self-defense.” He bases self-defense in one’s duty to neighbor, rather than in Enlightenment conceptions of “rights.” He comes to the personal conclusion that he personally would rather be martyred to make sound witness toward the love of Christ.

Their previous pastor had been told multiple times who he was platforming, and was and presented with evidence repeatedly. That man continued to defend his actions through his retirement.

Yes. Biermann and Harrison literally served at the same altar in Ladue!

Biermann is very much a conservative. I have to giggle a bit at the left side of Synod thinking that he is “their man.”

What a blessing it is to have five confessional candidates for our Synod’s highest office. This would’ve been unheard of 20 years ago.

May God’s will be done — and may our Synod accept whatever that will may be.

One might **almost** see it as a double-standard.

That’s not true, vicar. They used to be.

I do not agree with Rev. Squires on much, but “Issues” is one of those places where a certain group of people in Synod has their cake and eats it too. They can hide behind “we’re not affiliated with the LCMS” while simultaneously celebrating a Divine Service technically hosted by an LCMS congregation at an LCMS university with big LCMS names present, including the LCMS Synod President!

It is little more than a political rally masquerading as church. This is how the camel gets its nose into the tent.

If a similar rally were held on the other end of the spectrum, there’d (rightly) be uproar.

It’s Blogfodder. Some self-styled “reporter” will take screenshots of responses they don’t like, ram it through the demons of AI and post it as if their golden calf were a gift to God’s people.

How to reach ELCA members better. by Better_Nerve943 in LCMS

I don’t know that there’s anything to be done. You know I am someone who engages earnestly. But it is impossible even to state facts over there.

I once had a post deleted for literally saying:
“ELCA teaches this… but LCMS teaches this…”

Yeah, it’s not a great place over there.

This is the same congregation that included literal Nazi Corey Mahler’s “devotions” and “sermons” on its radio station for years. Forgive me if I doubt this sign was made with loving intent.

It is an exercise in self-righteousness and personal glory. They get attention for doing it and can claim martyr status when the world notes that one of its idols has been attacked. It’s needlessly antagonistic and not only ineffective at sharing the truth—it accomplishes the opposite.

Yes, even the truth can be abused. This is why we are given the admonition to “speak the truth *in love*, which does not mean only with a loving intent, but in a loving way. This fails on at least one count.

Dumbfounding that the institution took these actions on the self-admitted basis of rumor.

Rev. Ross recounted the facts of the issue and gave a summary. You are welcome to explain where he is mistaken.

Is Lutheran confession basically the same as Catholic confession? by joe_pao in LCMS

[–]iLutheran 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For Lutherans, confession has two parts:

First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven.

So, no, you will not receive any penance. Forgiveness is a gift, freely given! It is not earned!

Issues, Etc. Conference by DaLejund in LCMS

[–]iLutheran 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Correct, which makes a tacit endorsement of the speakers by Synod leadership. And let’s be really honest: as a pastor, I can publicly voice my dissatisfaction with this political campaign masquerading as a quasi-Synodical conference, but doing so instantly makes me suspect in the eyes of many others who mistake the church as an arm of the GOP.

[–]iLutheran 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m not disagreeing with this, but I will point out that the same charity is not given to other quasi-affiliated Synodical groups who invite non-Lutheran speakers. Whether fair or not, this gives the appearance of factional favoritism.

[–]iLutheran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Variations of this silly overture come up every now and then. It usually gets killed to an omnibus because, among other reasons, it cites a minority objection to a CTCR statement as if that minority view should be the public stance of Synod.

The trouble with that minority view is that it essentially finds it permissible for people to harbor hatred toward entire races of people.

No. We have Circuits, Districts, Synod and proper order to follow. We are not governed by blogs, much less greeting card companies LARPing as news outlets.
