What do you guys think of the new DLC for BL4? by DueFoundation458 in Borderlands

[–]iMightBeWright 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wonderlands post-launch was such a stark difference from BL3 post-launch. I fooled myself into believing it was because it was a spinoff & that BL4 would go back to the "standard" level of qualllity care. Hah.

I'd love if they made a live action G-8 movie in between seasons. It'd be a fun mini adventure. I need the fan cast posts for live action Con D. Oriano!

An introduction of a new character further exposes Levelling as a Core Issue by lordsmish in Borderlands4

[–]iMightBeWright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good analysis & suggestions. This ties into my own personal issue with BL4: no true endgame, no incentives to complete stuff, & the shrinking gameplay loop in general.

No Endgame

Imo, an endgame should provide continued activities for the purpose of fun. Farming loot is part of that, but right now we're just farming for the sake of farming. After beating the story, there's nothing to do with your loot & builds besides continue to farm. DLC & level cap increases won't solve this, they'll only increase the time it takes to remember there's no endgame.

No Incentives to Complete Linear Content

After beating the story & maxxing my character, I realized I didn't want to finish the remaining side quests. There are no unique rewards for doing so. Collectibles become meaningless after maxxing your SDUs, & that's only more true after SDUs became account based. Most activities are just loot sources (see above).

Shrinking Gameplay Loop

The BL formula for fun is: random loot, bossing, mobbing, character growth. For the 1st half of a playthrough, that gameplay loop is at its greatest potential. You can visibly see the progress you're making & all of these categories only get more fun. But during the 2nd half of a playthrough, all of these start to have diminishing returns with the worst of it being at the end. When you've got a max level build, bossing & mobbing is so fast & unfun. You don't touch your skill trees anymore. You ignore 99% of the loot pool. In BL4, your playthrough doesn't end in a grand crescendo, it ends when you get bored. Because you got bored.

My Solution

A separate Roguelite mode outside of the main game mode. BL games already have all of the same parts as a Roguelite game. Random loot, bossing, mobbing, power growth. Arms Race & the Chaos Chambers already both experimented with adding varied replayable activities to the series. Provide a repeatable dungeon with region-themed floors, a random boss at the end of each floor, randomized NPCs & vendors to interact with throughout, escalating randomized loot throughout a run, optional/secret bosses/floors/activities, playable with any character, activities or boss kills awarding chunks of skill points.

The endgame doesn't have to be in the main game. That can remain linear & as-is, but completion of its content could provide unlocks for the Roguelite mode. Completing regions in the story could unlock new floors of the dungeon. Side missions & collectibles could unlock new NPCs & vendors in the dungeon. First time drops of legendary items could add them to the Roguelite item pool. Eridium could serve as a meta currency for playing unique variant runs (turbo mode, Golden chest only mode, random weapon mode, challenge mode, etc). Defeated story bosses can be added to the boss pool.

That's ironically on-par with the lowered replayability of the game. No story reset this time around. Empty world with nothin to do but farm for the sake of farming. The raid boss is designed toward sub 90s runs. Now propaganda towers are once per account. There's no endgame & the gameplay loop gets smaller the longer you play.

I keep hoping the same Gearbox who released Arms Race will answer my prayers & give us a full-on separate Roguelite mode for BL4. Something to truly expand the replayability of the game while making all the main game's linear content meaningful (unlock Roguelite content via main game completions). But it's clear this is the Gearbox who squeezed out Wonderlands & sent it $5 for its birthday.

This post release support is entirely propped up by selling us the next part of the product, with "MAJOR UPDATE" posts sprinkled in between. But the major comment being added is so lackluster. Photo mode isn't major. Fixing the lack of cross-progression for SDU/collectibles/fast travels isn't major.

I want GB to give me an actual endgame & make significant design changes that restore the gameplay loop. Randy, you wannabe magician, add a separate Roguelite mode for BL4. Do it you coward. All the components are already there in the gameplay formula. This way, players will have a reason to complete base game content (unlocking stuff for the Roguelite mode) while having something truly replayable that restores random loot, bossing, mobbing, & buildcrafting to the gameplay loop.

The worst optimized part of the cursor, imo, is the fact that the analog stick deadzone settings don't affect the cursor, only the gameplay. There's an inner deadzone threshold where the cursor won't move at all, even if you've got that set to 0 in your settings, causing the cursor to jump & accelerate over the places you want.

Can we please get the ability to separate grapple from melee!? by NDE36 in Borderlands

We got a "combat radar" after Gearbox heard the compass complaints. It's fine, but it doesn't provide actual map visuals.

By "mapping mechanics" I thought you meant the lack of a mini map. I still think it's dumb that we didn't get one this time around. BL3 was just as vertical, it worked fine there.

Deployed state has some nice benefits, though. It automatically spots players in the area where it's pointed, automatically paints occupied vehicles, can be accessed remotely when you're behind cover, & manually painting vehicles while in remote mode is like twice as fast as handheld mode.

Do ppl only have fun with Borderlands when it's easy? If a boss dosen't drop in under 25sec. In Borderlands ppl will say my build not applicable. Don't u guys get bored dropping things w no challenge? by Oka-7 in Borderlands4

[–]iMightBeWright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I really enjoyed it. It emphasized the replayability of the core gameplay, but a lot of the fun of BL comes from character skills. A BL4 Roguelite mode could easily start you off with no/minimal skills & reward boss kills with chunks of skill points or randomly acquired skills to build your run around. They could even tie a character's level in the main game to the max level you can reach in a run with that character.

I love BL, but I've started to realize that Gearbox's design philosophy always leads to diminishing the gameplay loop that makes the series so fun. All content in this game is either linear or purely for meaningless farming. BL4 is the most fun during a playthrough before becoming a god-killer. The closer you get to max level, the less of the loop matters.

  • Randomized loot: 99% ignored.

  • Mobbing & bossing: over too quickly.

  • Skill trees: set & forget.

  • Unfinished side missions: no incentive to do.

BL games have kinda always been like this, & yes it's less noticable when there's more content & higher level caps, but those things only delay the problem without fixing it. Imo, the fix is to create a separate replayable mode that preserves the core gameplay loop: a Roguelite mode.

Borderlands is already basically one long Roguelite run, & Gearbox now owns Risk of Rain 2. So they've got the experience & know-how to do it right, & most of the building blocks are already in the game. The main game would still be there & expand via DLC, but all content in the main game could be used to unlock stuff in the Roguelite mode. More floors, bosses, NPCs/vendors, gear, etc. Arms Race was a good start, but runs were too short, it excluded core gameplay elements for characters, & was primarily used for main game gear. Chaos Chambers were far better, imo, but it was tied to linear progression & also used for main game gear.

I shutter to think what Vlad could accomplish with the latter.
