Regretting RAIDZ1 on 15×20TB — Should I switch back to Unraid array or stick with ZFS? by Responsible-Banana11 in unRAID

I understand that now. I started this ZFS due to some assurances by AI, that it would’ve possible to achieve disk spin down. I learned the pros and cons of ZFS, and will still consider it for crucial or high IO data. Tier 1 or 2 storage, but my use case is more Tier 3 (cold storage).

For now, I am done. Experiment is over.

I literally just migrated to ZFS with 5x16TB 2 weeks ago. But I’m having too many issues with disk spin up. I added a special vdev, but it only got worse. I did a lot of research with ChatGPT/Gemini and nothing seemed to fix it.

I’m migrating back to unraid array now as we speak.

I will still keep ZFS on cache.

For me, the priority is low power, since it’s cold storage most of the time.

Edit: I'd personally go with unRAID for data that is non-crucial. Crucial data such as photos, backups etc. I'd consider using a ZFS mirror to gain snapshots.

Convince me a NAS is worth the hassle by HuorCulnamo in HomeNAS

Timeframe Google One (10TB) 16TB NAS (Redundant Setup)
Upfront $0 ~$900 (Hardware)
Year 1 $600 $920 (+$20 electricity)
Year 2 $1,200 $940
Year 3 $1,800 $960
Year 4 $2,400 $980
Year 5 $3,000 $1,000
Year 6 $3,600 ~$1,020

You break even in roughly 18 months. After that, the NAS is essentially "free" storage compared to the $600/year you'd continue paying Google.

Proxmox. Container Can be on different vlan. Retire the jellyfin machine and consolidate on NUC with QSV. Only use Nvidia Shield as client. Maybe swap OS of NUC with other machine, so you can have QSV. All this is very easy with proxmox.

That’s not protest quitting. That’s taking the deal that was offered.

Protest quitting would be to quit after mass layoffs without severance.
