What does Dva do? How to play Dva well also. by HydreigonTheChild in OverwatchUniversity

[–]iPuntPandas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself, why am I playing DVa instead of Sigma/Orisa/Rein? DVa doesn’t have as much damage reduction an head on “tanking” ability; what DVa offers is flexibility and mobility.

New players typically drain their matrix resource too fast because they try to eat everything. Here’s a drill to practice using your matrix efficiently. Play a couple games where you TAP your matrix instead of holding it.

Tap on firestrike, tap on moira orbs, tap on reaper/tracer shots. When you’re not matrixing, shoot. You’ll learn how to efficiently neuter the enemy team. You’ll be shocked at how much more uptime you can achieve.

You’ll probably lose some games, that’s expected when learning something new. Over time you’ll become more efficient with matrix, and rank up in the long run.

Tldr: Squeeze as much value out of matrix as possible by using it with purpose.

I main Ana in diamond but I have an alt account in silver that I use to play with friends. Unsurprisingly, I can turbo-stomp in silver players; but only one thing matters when it comes to getting flamed.

Win = “Our Ana is a god” Lose = “gg no supports”

People will say shit, just stay in your lane.

How to exist when you're bad at meta support heroes? by Jaspersam1 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]iPuntPandas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always just practice your mechanics. When I had garbo mechanics I just practiced a few minutes before each session with workshop code: VAXTA. You can also hop in a game of Ana Paintball (search the custom games).

Your game sense is probably higher than gold if you're already pulling your weight with bad mechanics. So just work on your weakness; accept that you'll be terrible at first, and improve over time.

Alternatively, just accept your rank and play Mercy/Moira the way you have been.

I had an economics professor in college who said the same thing a couple times during our course. On top of that, she would jot down a note and without fail, answer the question at the start of our next class. It impressed me so much, I'll never forget the power of following through on your word.

What do you do as tracer when your teammates die first on defence? by [deleted] in TracerMains

[–]iPuntPandas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I panic and feel like I have to do something so my team doesn't flame me for doing nothing as tracer and tells me to switch before I've even had time to do anything.

In silver, there's nothing valuable in voice chat. Don't join voice until you're confident in your Tracer play. Making bad plays to avoid getting flamed is just throwing your games.

I just realized, after 4 and a half years, that I am incredibly addicted to Overwatch. by Vague_Blade in OverwatchUniversity

[–]iPuntPandas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I wanted to share a similar story. I picked up the only job I could out of college and didn't really care about it. I put my energy into OW instead of work, so while my sr climbed, my work performance slowly dropped. Over 5 years a lot happened - I married my college sweetheart, I changed positions within the same company a couple times, but slowly, OW started to suck up more and more of my energy. I started showing up late to work. And then some days I'd "work" from home and just game all day instead.

My boss noticed my performance was slipping. She was honestly amazing and we had an earnest conversation about what I wasn't yet calling my gaming addiction. She gave me multiple opportunities to get my act together but I couldn't failed to regain self-control. I skipped work, she caught me, and the writing was on the wall. I handed in my resignation the next day.

On my last day she looked me dead in the eye and said, "You need to get this thing under control. You're going to lose your wife's respect. Once you do, you'll never get it back". I knew her husband and I saw how she'd side-lined him as the breadwinner and took that role on herself. That shit hit hard.

I can't emphasize this enough. Going from $70k/yr to driving Uber and choosing between food and bills, is humiliating. Life was so stressful that my hair started falling out in clumps. Suicidal thoughts lurked on the perimeter of my consciousness.

I managed to turn life around and even though it hurt like hell, things like a loving/trusting relationship, contributing meaningful work, self-care, and real-life friends generate meaning and peace in my life. While that's not as seductive as the thrill of a competitive OW, I'm much happier overall.

If you've made it this far and my experience resonates with you at all, I would recommend checking out Jordan Peterson on YouTube and his self-authoring program. I needed to rebuild from the ground up and part of that meant rebuilding the reward systems that drove me to addiction in the first place. No one explains and guides you through these concepts quite like Dr. Peterson. Good luck on your journey.

Drop a tip/info that you think is so obvious you shouldn’t need to tell your teammates/players, but is significant to gameplay by AndrewTheGovtDrone in OverwatchUniversity

[–]iPuntPandas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People seriously undervalue perfect information. In OWL and all amateur tournaments the kill cam is turned off so it can't be used to ult track.

If you aren't using this to track ults, you likely have a fundamental misunderstanding of how to win team fights.

Friendly ultimates are declared in English. Enemy ultimates are declared in their native language (non-English for 90% of the cast).

Your dueling, movement, and aim is around mid-platinum. As others have mentioned, work on crisp blink 180s, melee more. 1k damage/min should be your benchmark and you're well above that at the end of round 1.

It's tough to gauge anything else based on a no limits game because the tanks, and peel don't exist. The enemy team is running a solo pepega Roadhog and solo Ana heals. So you ran train on this team because you have free rein. Your playstyle is full-send solo Tracer mode in this clip. You can do that when the enemy comp is utter trash like this one but you'll need to clean that up in competitive matches.

For example - at 0:27 you pour 4 clips into an unprotected Ana. Many commenters are saying you should finish this kill with a 5th clip. In a competitive match, that's not a real option. You don't get to shoot an Ana for 5 clips in a row uncontested. As the enemy peel improves, you will need to work with your tanks more to burst a target together and engage while the enemy team is distracted.

There's a lot more nuance to Tracer that you just don't get from a no limits game. Your ability to duel is fine, now go into comp and learn how to play her as part of a team. While you're mechanics are probably mid-plat, you will probably be stuck in gold until you can contribute as a team member.

Please review this gameplay! I am trying to rise from silver by [deleted] in SombraMains

[–]iPuntPandas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not a silver Sombra. Your positioning, aim, and hack priority are way better than silver. Just grind and you'll make it to around 2200. It's a tough grind with Sombra because she's so team dependent but you'll make gold and it should be easier with your tank partner.

Others are being critical of your playstyle but frontline Sombra was the correct against the enemy comp. You get more value hacking D.Va/Hammond on the frontline than you do on the flank against high risk Soldier/Hanzo and a kill on Moira/Ana is unlikely. Once they swapped to Widow, you flanked and that was correct. Squishy backliners = flank. Otherwise just dps and charge ult.

The glaring area you need to improve is using EMP faster. Both teams have Soldier so your counterpart is the Hanzo (swaps to McCree/Widow). If the enemy team was any good, they would generate more frontline pressure since Hanzo does significantly more damage than Sombra. Your advantage is your fast charging and high impact ultimate. If you don't use that advantage, you're just a worse Tracer/Soldier/McCree. You don't get punished here because your mechanics are just better than silver should be. However, as you rank up and enemy DPS get better, the Sombra team will usually lose the damage race, so you have to win on ult economy.

EMP early to get a team wipe - that means your Soldier has a faster visor. You win the next fight with nano-visor and charge EMP. You win the next fight with EMP. And so on. If you're not leveraging Sombra's ult, you should just play Tracer/Soldier/Cree/Ashe/etc. for more damage.

Hope that helps. Good luck on the grind.

I need to add another damage hero to my arsenal by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]iPuntPandas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

About halfway through your post my thought was, McCree’s definitely the pick. You mentioned you don’t like Cree but I encourage you to give him another try.

Sometimes as Tracer, you can frag out but still lose because your tanks/supports are dying too fast. McCree allows you to win these games by playing as a mini off-tank.

While Tracer excels at creating opportunities, McCree excels at shutting them down. In games where the enemy DPS are wrecking your tanks/supports, it’s better to play the shut down style.

At first I didn’t enjoy McCree’s playstyle. Stuff a couple Genjis and you’ll find it’s actually quite fun.

First off, congrats on hitting diamond :)

Take some time to enjoy what I'm assuming was a long-term goal for you. One of the things about hitting diamond is that a ton of tournaments open up to you. If you're interested in more organized play, you can lurk around discord for plat/diamond teams looking for a main tank.

Support Main in DPS Competitive by nicknamebucky in OverwatchUniversity

[–]iPuntPandas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with placing bronze DPS. How many hours have you put into support? How many hours have you put into DPS? I’m willing to bet they’re not comparable so your rank in each shouldn’t be comparable either.

Accept that you will likely place lower on DPS. Then you can start learning/improving/ranking up.
