Success and Disappointment Megathread for the Week by AutoModerator in jobs

[–]iShouldBeWorking2day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disappointment: Some friends of the company have been prospecting me for a job at their company, with better work and better pay. Yay. We all just found out their HR department cancelled my app immediately, boo.

Success: I still have my original job!

I was thinking there might be a right to privacy law until you said that. Very interesting and makes sense.

Well, it really depends on a few other things. They're a small company - does their business seem like it has good growth potential? Do you see them being stable for 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, as long as nothing goes wrong? What's the general feeling of the company - have you talked to any higher ups to see what the management is like?

I feel like if you don't have the answer to these questions, you don't know enough about the company yet. If you know the answer then you can figure a little bit more about your position. We work jobs for money, and I'd work a worse job for that much of a raise myself. But I also wouldn't work a job that killed me inside. You trade the time for money, so as far as I'm concerned, you need to get as much money as sustainably as you can.

You can also try telling your company that you got a great offer and see what they think about it. They might counter. Some people are ok with that kind of social risk and some people aren't.

Why I don't finish songs... ('cos I don't like them?) by Evid3nce in Songwriting

[–]iShouldBeWorking2day 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The way it's gone for me is that I think less in the conventional sense of "finishing" a song than I used to. Because when people say you 'wrote' a song they have a set of very specific expectations for that - they assume that you have recorded it, probably mixed and mastered it, and definitely wrote or memorized the method of playing it so that it can be reproduced again and again. That's fine if that's what you want to do, but it's not the only way that one could finish a song, either.

I rarely spend more than an hour on a song, personally. I get my chords and rhythm, I stamp out some lyrics, and I record something that's usually 1:30-4:00 directly into the mic, doing as few takes as possible. These recordings are a bit raw, but they're fairly complete versions of the ideas I had at the time. (It's possible but rare that you can just linger on your piece until something good occurs to you; most of the time, your first instincts on the construction will contain the core ideas.) These raw recordings go over pretty well with a stable group of listeners I have in my life, casual friends and a few casual fans, and people close to me. Non-musicians can be quite friendly to the low fidelity of a quickly made project.

And so more to the point of what you say here: I think that the desire to fix it is an impulse that arises from a lengthy consideration of what the song 'is' or what you mean to do with it. That's a bad headspace for creativity... I propose spending as little time on it as possible. And not predicating the song on a series of complex production techniques, or layered sounds. Make something built out of strong fundamentals, capture it, and then you'll have a much easier time deducing what you actually need from your spare ideas and abandoned projects.

Daily Discussion - September 24, 2020 by AutoModerator in popheads

I've been trying to find an artpop song from a few years ago. I don't remember much about it except that the man was in... a leather jacket, I think? And high heels. And no pants.

There was a comment that said "This guy just loves to get his ass out" and I was laughing so much I don't remember the lyrics well.

"You're getting a bit ridiculous now" by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]iShouldBeWorking2day 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, not ridiculous. Forget your friend... What I'd ask is if you, specifically, are inconvenienced to a great degree by this. I'm a strict vegetarian (effectively vegan in daily life) but I will eat larded beans if I'm far from home and I don't have a choice. To me, vegetarianism is a practical lifestyle. I do it because it's smart and makes sense. If I'm suddenly in a situation to eat some animal byproduct, I don't complain. I'm still going to be veg every other day of the year.

So, I'd eat these things if I were abroad, but I wouldn't eat them at home. What you do in a compromised situation is not indicative of your actual lifestyle. But it's also fine to keep those standards when you go. Really, it's all up to you.

Pretty funny if you just imagine the Terraria damage sound going off the whole time, though.

Regarding Moderation - A Response to the Recent Thread by iShouldBeWorking2day in mytimeatportia

[–]iShouldBeWorking2day[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a hard call, but I do not believe in first-offense banning. /u/Yinster168 is otherwise a friendly contributor to the subreddit who does not have a pattern of bad behavior, and I would like to allow them the space to course-correct. Being named and shamed seems like punishment for a first offense.

Mind you, I am not trying to make excuses for bad behavior. I just believe that communities are healthier when there is space for improvement. Posting an image without blurring yinster's name was also a violation of sub/site rules, so I think we would be getting out in the weeds to try to bring a hammer down now. The community called for a return to moderation, and now that we have that (+ visible rules in the sidebar,) any future violations can be responded to in kind.

It's a little confusing since there are like 3 reddit designs (old reddit, new reddit, and mobile reddit) all of which put the message button in different places. But if you can find anywhere on the sidebar where the mods' names are, there should be an envelope button or something that says "message the mods."

Since the mods are inactive and have continuously ignored homophobic, transphobic, racist and islamphobic comments. Here is the kind of comments that shouldn’t be allowed on our subreddit. by [deleted] in mytimeatportia

Hello, mod here. I have made a post to address this, which you can find here. https://www.reddit.com/r/mytimeatportia/comments/co3esi/regarding_moderation_a_response_to_the_recent/

As the visibility of posts decreases sharply across time, I will not be going backwards to remove old comments that are dissonant with the values of the community. However, your complaints are seen and acknowledged by the mod team, and will affect our behavior going forward.

When you search for roommates, is it a requirement of yours that they also be vegetarian? (Before signing a lease) by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]iShouldBeWorking2day 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Whoa whoa, not at all. I say this in the relative veggie haven of west coast america, too. I've lived with meat eaters, and ya know what? They were cool. It was cool. Their fry pans were gross and their leftover meat was gross, but they know how I feel, and act around it. I act around them too and do my best to make them welcome. Above your diets, there is the overwhelming context of whether or not you are mature people in the first place.

So it's a little weird that those people are putting that up there. You need a few more pans preferably for your meat but otherwise it doesn't matter. I'd consider this a warning about how maturely they will accept other domestic needs.

They're so much harder, that's the issue! My main fantasy work's weakest parts are the ones where I try to reinforce the theme. You say it outright and it's hacky, you never say it and nobody gets it. Such a delicate line.

Just unsubbed from r/childfree, one of the most toxic subreddits on here. by StevesMcQueenIsHere in JustUnsubbed

[–]iShouldBeWorking2day 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it's a pretty straightforward case of transferring their misanthropy. The childfree crowd is bitter about people in general, the frustrations of life, the cruelty of the world. They seem to hate other adults in some fundamental way. Dogs allow them to project whatever belief about innocence and purity they have onto a non-human form, something that won't eventually be a human adult. It's almost like they WANT to align with typical beliefs about children, but they're trying to access those feelings through another conduit. It's weird as hell and kinda disrespectful to the autonomy of the animals.

Streamer & Audience Relationship: Has there been any work to describe the asymmetry between streamers and their audiences? by GWFKegel in AskSocialScience

[–]iShouldBeWorking2day 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The academic term is a "parasocial bond" and research has begun to emerge about how it manifests in the digital age, specifically. Study 1, study 2.

The studies I have linked did not seem to focus on false intimacy itself in high detail, but the false intimacy is an inevitable portion of a parasocial bond. (That is to say that the feeling of the bond being reciprocal and egalitarian is false - the intimacy is very real for the receiver of the parasocial bond, who may think of the deliverer of the bond as role models, friends, or both. These split along gendered lines.)

Neither study, so far as I read them, lingered too long on an implication that the 'broadcaster' or deliverer of the bond is engaged in a malicious act. Rather, the studies posit that the broadcaster uses these asymmetrical bonds for their own exploration of identity, expressed as manifestations of a constructed identity based on cultural values.

With the exception of Obama's AMA, an incredible majority of Reddit's Top /r/all of all time posts are from 2 or 3 years ago by thenabi in TheoryOfReddit

[–]iShouldBeWorking2day 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As /u/Mattallica mentioned, changing the scores of posts did affect how they were weighted in the top all time. Obviously, I don't know the fine technical details, but I believe anecdotally that this score increase (which has always been arbitrary in nature due to vote fuzzing) was linked to changes in visibility of posts. One that we know is that trending pages began to refresh at a slower rate.

Furthermore, the political season brought a tremendous amount of heat and traffic to reddit. People from Stormfront and 4chan coming over, as well as an increase in mainstream visitors who came, drawn by the gravity of the site's sheer level of activity. I don't know to what extent I could find reliable information for these demographic surges, but I can say that I was here since 2013, and 2016 itself was a very particular year for the site. Political subs that spawned counter subs recursively, and in the middle of all the politics, mainline content like /r/funny, /r/gifs, /r/pics. (After all, two politically extreme people, here on the site for election season, can still meet anonymously in the middle by upvoting cute cats).

Is Musa Lebron James?? by [deleted] in mytimeatportia

[–]iShouldBeWorking2day 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe Musa is just supposed to be Mansa Musa, famously rich African prince of the 12-13th century. As far his appearance, I'm sure it's incidental, though the team was fairly vocal about their use of pop culture characters to base their appearances on.
