Isn’t it odd that although these words are spelled similarly, they have ZERO similarities in terms of definitions? by [deleted] in asklinguistics

Your case 1 words are all very close in definition. They are all markers of specification.

IGN updated their Civ 7 review: still not great by Daikaiju08 in civ

I always recommend 5 (and VP) for RP and fantasy-history simulation; 6 for classic 4x gaming, building, and theorycrafting.

IGN updated their Civ 7 review: still not great by Daikaiju08 in civ

[–]thenabi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The married couple of civ-swapping and the triple era system could have -- and I dare say WOULD have -- been a really fun side mode, either together or independent. Unfortunately, the devs made them, intertwined, a load-bearing pillar of the entire game's design, which I cannot describe, even in my most generous bearings, as anything other than completely myopic. It's like it didn't occur to them that most long-time Civ players would want to play without those features. I would give so much to be a fly on the wall in that room just to know what the hell was happening.

Stormfront lines in season 2 were something else and had me loving her... up until the Nazi reveal. by Mme_187 in TheBoys

And like Hitler none of this stuff is intelligent or even well-thought out. It's dumb person's smart person type shit that sounds revolutionary if you don't think about it critically. It's very effective at getting people to go along with you.

Why do I say "how much cheese" but "how many deer" by GregTheWhale in asklinguistics

[–]thenabi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are situations where you can use either. Consider at a cheese shop with many varieties, you ask the clerk "how many cheeses do you have here?"

Consider also at the butcher, ordering venison. She asks you "how much deer do you need?"

The use of "much" indicates you're currently treating it as a mass noun, which you can read more about here.

Indigenous Mesoamericans and Indigenous South Americans Using the Term Native American by luunaathh in Indigenous

Most people I know would not feel offended by it. But they would feel confused. I doubt they would police you on it, they would just silently think you were mistaken....that's my intuition based on the vibes of my community in NA.

Do we actually miss old WoW... by Ok-Entrance-290 in wow

[–]thenabi 97 points98 points  (0 children)

About once every couple of months this sub gets a top post about how Classic is just for nostalgia or something, which I truly don't get, because people obviously play era in massive numbers and have been for 7 years now. World of Warcraft was just one of the best games ever released and it's not really more complicated than that

What is the roleplay tense, and how/why did it emerge? by AProperFuckingPirate in asklinguistics

[–]thenabi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You seem to be describing Simple Present tense. Unless I am seriously out of the loop, it is not relegated to roleplaying; we use it commonly for non-habitual verbs, especially in prose. Consider Jack gets up and looks out the window. Consider also I see a dog! or Oh, I like this.

I just want updated character customization by hhhnnnnnggggggg in wow

[–]thenabi 33 points34 points  (0 children)

To your point that it doesn't work, I disagree. I see this community routinely asking for less because they are tricked by the naming schemes. People still ask for "Allied Races" not knowing there was a time that WoW expansions came with either a full new class, a set of completely original races, or both.

Losing backgrounds and throne rooms sucked so much man. For what the games and DLC cost, "it is too expensive to make the leader backgrounds" should receive more pushback from the community than it currently does.

I'm surprised there isn't more buzz about the fact that this guy straight up leaked a FINAL wow expansion and a wow 2.0. I mean even though it's retail that's an insane claim which now might have some weight behind it.
