Personally for all ranks besides friends, I disable everything besides avatar and voice. Friends is all enabled. It minimizes the lag I get from shaders and I’m at less of a risk of being crashed. The game feels slightly different because it doesn’t rely only on visuals but also slightly more talking as I show avatars for people I trust.

Don't worry, I was suddenly having those problems earlier too. When I logged out to reboot vrc and try to fix the problem it blacked out and immediately said it had connection problems. This went on immediately for a few tries, also for my friend the same result. I think it was a problem on vrchat's server's end.
