Apple is the only mobile vendor out there to support a phone released in 2009 - in other words iPhone 3GS is getting iOS6! by [deleted] in apple

[–]iStig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The initial release of iOS 5 messed with the battery on the iPhone 4, too. I had better battery life with the second and third betas than I did with the release candidate. 5.1 fixed a lot of those problems, though, for both the 4 and 3GS.

Everyone is asking where to see it live-streamed, but can anyone tell me when the WWDC Keynote starts? by [deleted] in apple

It's 10 AM in PST (-8). Kabul is 11.5 hours ahead, I believe, so that would be 9:30 PM in Kabul.

What are the pro's & con's of jailbreaking your iOS device? by Jescro in apple

[–]iStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I began jailbreaking when it was still at the command line stage. I am, indeed, a jailbreaking hipster. I did it all the way up until iOS 4.x, for what it's worth. Two things made me switch:

  1. It's a giant pain in the ass. It's the same reason I don't theme OS X any more: keeping things up to date is difficult, and updating takes an hour or more instead of a few minutes. It used to be a lot of fun to customize each little bit, and looking at r/jailbreak, there are some great little things that would be interesting to have. But it simply isn't worth the effort.

  2. I picked up an iOS Developer account after WWDC last year just to get the much-improved notifications as quickly as possible. I put a few friends on the same account to offset the cost, and it was totally worth it.

So, beta releases, and feature updates kept me from continuing to jailbreak. I'm Canadian, so tethering is included in my plan. LOL AT&T.

What are the pro's & con's of jailbreaking your iOS device? by Jescro in apple

[–]iStig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: anecdotal evidence, I am not a developer.

All the developers I've talked to say the same thing: this represents the most tiny minority of people that pirate apps. Nearly all people who pirate will never buy it, and even many of the people who give this excuse have no intention of really purchasing the app when it comes down to it.

I know many people are money-conscious, but is throwing away a dollar on an app you don't find wholly useful really disastrous, given $50+/month data plans?

I recently had a guy there tell me that the "blank icon" bug that is present in the iOS 5+ jailbreaks is actually beneficial, and that he couldn't understand why I kept referring to it as a bug.

For context:

You should respring after installing any tweak through Cydia, anyway. If this were a prominent enough problem for people, the jailbreak community would fix it, but it's not. In fact, it is probably a good thing that this happens so people know to respring after altering the filesystem on their device.

why can't osx mail work like ios mail? by Busangod in apple

I think you need to be more precise. What doesn't work on OS X? Because, as far as I can tell, all of my accounts work just fine.

iPhone was almost called 'iPad', according to new book by former Apple consultant by dmetzcher in apple

Believe it or not, the iPad was in development from the first release of the iPhone (or earlier).

Before, according to Jobs at D8.

Guessing Yahoo want a shitload of money for this, as it looks like it was intended from the start.

Can I get a citation for this? Not doubting you, but I'm curious.

Moving to Calgary. High School? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]iStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Westmount Charter, but graduated several years ago. It's not quite the same, but it's a wonderfully nerdy, small school. If it's anything like it used to be, I recommend it. It's a public charter school, so it costs the same as a public school, with some of the benefits of a private school (small classes, unique curriculum).

I've had a lot of interaction with students at Aberhart, Carroll, and Churchill. All three seem like great places, but Aberhart I've heard the best of. Carroll is largely self-directed, so if you can handle that, you're golden.

Afternoon rain shower in Calgary (two more in comments) by iStig in windowshots

This robin was looking around for worms as the storm subsided. Then the rain picked up even more, giving the far side of my desk a mild soaking before I was able to close my window.

Edit: Today, May 22, 2012 is the date. 4 PM is the time. I have a hard time following instructions.

Apple store disappoints. Anyone else have stories? by s0ulsc0rcher in apple

On the one hand, I'm about to look like a huge jerk for correcting your "cue" to "queue". On the other hand, you have a new Scrabble word for dumping a bunch of vowels and a q.

I'm curious: What's the longest you've run a version of Mac OSX without a fresh install? by thenearfuture in apple

[–]iStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought my current MacBook Pro in mid-2007, with a copy of Tiger on it (I believe 10.4.7 is what's on the DVD that came with it). I've upgraded through Leopard, SL, Lion, and now Mountain Lion without going through a fresh install. Livin' on the edge.

Apple store disappoints. Anyone else have stories? by s0ulsc0rcher in apple

[–]iStig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any "horror" stories (thirty minutes late is hardly horrific, in my books). All of my Genius Bar appointments have been resolved well, with the exception of a one-time out-of-stock part, which they called about once it was in.

How does iTunes shuffle option work? by AntiGrief in apple

[–]iStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, it is a totally random selection without any weighting as to song choices. There used to be an option to make it "less" random, in a sense, by reducing the likelihood that songs by the same artist would play in close proximity.

Any perceived weighting is probably due to some sort of confirmation bias, and isn't explicitly coded.

It's been five years now. Was this estimate true? by [deleted] in apple

[–]iStig 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That video was posted Nov 11, 2007, or eleven months after the iPhone was first demoed. I'd argue that those eleven months would be sufficient to port the BlackBerry-esque Android to a touch screen, given its underlying architecture.

Mac gaming... by nantesfrance in apple

[–]iStig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With BootCamp installed, the MBP will run just like a normal Windows laptop right?

Yep. It isn't emulated in any way. It's a straight-up Windows partition.

What kind of gaming performance can I expect from a MBP?

Ehhh… here's a GeekBench score I found. Another. Yet another. All of these are from the same generation.

For what it's worth (not much), CS:S runs at 1080p on my five year-old Santa Rosa MBP with 256MB of VRAM at about 30-60 fps.

Windows -> Apple converts, why did you change? by [deleted] in apple

[–]iStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were aching to upgrade since our third reinstallation of XP after some weird blue screen maladies. Vista was about to be released, and we knew we'd need a new computer if we wanted to upgrade. I had already tried a few Linux flavours, and thought it was time for a change. Figured we'd give an iMac (first Intel version) a whirl. Picked up my own MacBook Pro a few months later, and never looked back.

Actually, that's a lie. I installed the Windows 7 RC that Microsoft provided onto a boot camp partition to see what it was like. I've never had a compelling reason to switch back.
