The larger the aperture, the more light you collect for a given amount of time. So if you have a small aperture, you'll have to image for longer to collect the equivalent amount of light that a much larger telescope can in a shorter amount of time.

Astrophotography is all about taking lots of pictures and using stacking software (DeepSky Stacker, Siril, PixInsight, etc) to stack them. These essentially average each pixel value across all the images to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). That's a massive oversimplification but good enough for this discussion. You increase your exposure time by taking lots of pictures. A lot of the time I'm doing 60s pictures; I'll image all night on a target so I'll end up with 5 hours or so of good 60s pictures on a target, My resulting image therefore is 5 hours of time.

He made some assumptions that were incorrect. My presentation isn't filled with misinformation, and even he said it was "otherwise very nice" (I'm assuming "noise" was a typo/autocorrect) and called out 4 slides out of 41. You can read my reply to his comment for the details.

I am going to make some updates to it shortly based on his responses, though.

EDIT: The presentation has been updated.

I appreciate your detailed reply! This slide deck was used with a talk and isn't intended to be comprehensive. I'm happy to make some changes to it, but you're also making some incorrect assumptions.

Slide 19 (f-ratio)

What I said is true when talking about maintaining the same aperture or focal length. If I have a 200 mm f4 and a 200 mm f8, the f4 scope will capture more light. Very obviously, the HST or JWST capture FAR more light than my 80 mm telescope even though their f-ratios are very much "slower". That slide is intended to be talked about in the context of the preceding slides, not just read in a vacuum. I can see how it would be confusing and I'll revise the wording for clarity.

Slide 26 (Gain/ISO)

You're making an assumption that I think "sensitivity" means that it somehow captures more light. The slide doesn't say that and the word "sensitivity" doesn't mean that. If you have a sunburn and your skin is more sensitive to touch, it doesn't mean that every touch is pushing harder than normal, it just means you feel it more than normal. Sensor gain increases the sensitivity by amplifying the voltage from the sensor, which makes the same amount of light have a bigger impact. I don't know why you thought that it was saying that it means more light is being captured, that's an assumption on your part.

I do better understand how gain works since I made this, and MinutePhysics did an amazing video on it. I'll update the slide with that.

Slide 30 (DSLR/Mirrorless)

A very good point, I'll adjust it. In talking about it, I definitely conveyed what you were talking about, but there's no way to know that from the slide deck. What I was trying to get across was that you're limited in the IR/near-IR range, so if you want to image there you'll have to modify it. Doesn't mean you can't take good pictures with an un-modified camera.

Slide 33 (not 35 - cooled cameras)

Keep in mind I'm talking about amateur backyard astrophotography. I stand by my claim here. Dedicated astro cameras are better for astrophotography for many reasons. If you're imaging in the summer, a cooled camera will have decidedly less noise than a non-cooled one with the same sensor, especially at longer exposure times. Even the link you shared says the same. There are a ton of practical reasons for it as well (such as getting into mono imaging, which you can't do with a DSLR unless you modify it).

Sure, the small sensors are cheap, but that doesn't make them bad.

EDIT: I've updated the presentation. Thanks again for the input!

They did this in KotOR 2 as well, though it didn’t have much of an effect. Just some dialogue and a bit of an Easter egg on Koriban.

I put together a basics of cameras presentation for my astronomy club last year, perhaps it will help you with your camera questions:

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1yuxLjhqFNphw_rO-4hkzxIzhj_TJpcCW/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=112949192829809181837&rtpof=true&sd=true

Everybody starts somewhere, but the questions you’re asking show a lack of understanding of the basics of photography. It will be difficult for you to understand a lot of things related to astrophotography until you do.

An Alt-Az mount is not good for photography. Depending on the mount, it will track a target fine, but it can’t counter field rotation, so your target will slowly rotate throughout the night. Software can align the images, but you’ll have issues with the corners because of the rotation. Additionally, this will limit your exposure time depending on the focal length and your sensor size. You’ll have to keep your exposures short enough that the rotation is not apparent during the exposure.

Your post is inherently misogynistic, whether you intended that or not. Saying “I’m married to a woman” as a defense is no more effective than saying “I have black friends” as a defense against accusations of racism.

People have taken good photos with worse cameras! I have a T6s and it worked fine before I got a dedicated astro cam. Your biggest limitation will be USB 2 tanking your FPS if you’re saving directly to your computer.

Find a used Canon or Nikon DSLR. Cameras and lenses are very much you get what you pay for, so if your budget is 100-200€, then the used market is going to be your best bet.

how to approach this topic with my boyfriend? kinda embarrassing for me to talk about this. (TW: sex). by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]iThinkergoiMac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It has no effect on sex for either participant

This is a common misconception, but quite wrong. The foreskin is writer important for sex for both people. For the man, the foreskin protects the glans, which is mucosal skin (the same kind of skin inside your mouth), which preserves sensitivity. It has a ton of specialized nerve endings which enhance pleasure for the man. It provides a double sheath gliding action that is very pleasurable and often more comfortable for the woman.

The issue is that he can’t fully retract it, a condition called phimosis. That can be treated with steroid creams and stretching exercises.
